Could DtG please tone it down a bit with these ridiculous updates?!
Especially since they add virtually nothing to the game!

Forcing players to download 7GB files several times before the release of every new DLC, even if I don’t intend to buy it, is a complete joke.

It seems Dovetail Games has found a way to spoil even my enjoyment of the first truly good and only playable DLC in the entire TSW series – the Medway Valley Line route.

I’ve got an hour to spare and’d like to play on Medway Valley Line, but I can’t because DtG is sending me yet another 7.4GB update this week, which takes nearly half an hour to download! And DtG doesn’t even feel obliged to inform customers what changes this update brings to the game, to somehow justify the need to download 7GB of the game all over again.

If you’re stuck for time, there’s always the option to play in offline mode.

I know updates are frustrating, but they’re mandatory. You say they don’t offer any benefits, but how do you know there aren’t any?
That one passenger you saw in the gutter of the platform - gone.
    That floating tree - gone.

Ha entirely speculation there on my part, but I don’t believe they would release patches for nothing.

Maybe update your games when you not play. As far as I know, the last update is from the 12th of May, so there was plenty of time to download the update. I hope DTG will just continue with patches and don't listen to complaints like this.

It's no good moaning at the lack of updates, then moaning when we do get one - assuming it's something meaningful of course. Just go off and play another game while the patch downloads and installs.

With all due respect 7gb is not a massive update compared to some of the others we have had.

If you go into the game's properties on its Steam library page, you get several options for managing updates.

It's 2026 and 7GB is taking a little longer to load than it took me to write this post.

I think without some proper context it’s difficult to judge the OP’s situation.

7GB download for me with my 150mb speeds would take me roughly 6 minutes to download.
I’m assuming this guy is from the UK.
So unless this person lives in the middle of nowhere or where he lives they’re still using copper wire for his internet, which average speeds from about 2-10 mbps. It’s quite reasonable he’s going to be upset.

I have a mate down Cornwall who lives quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and he’s in a similar situation.

Reinstalling MSFS2020 the base files from Asobo are something like 130Gb (and their server is not as fast as Steam) then that’s before installing any of the scenery or aircraft enhancement packs. Actually, I have seen the game referred to as MS Download Simulator!

When it first came out, I remember this as one of the few occasions when Steam remitted the two hour refund window so that those frustrated by the slow download (with at one point the Asobo server failing to support resume), could get their money back. The one thing that frustrates me slightly about MSFS2020 is that none of the DLC can be purchased on Steam using your Wallet credit. And if you have MS/XB store credit, you can’t spend that in the in game Marketplace store on the Steam version, only if you purchased the core game direct from MS.

    @J.T.

We’d actually like to see DTG release even more updates than they have so far.

As far as I’m concerned, DTG can release two major updates every week.
That way, we’d finally get those updates that were submitted to DTG a long time ago but haven’t been released yet.

And your claim that updates don’t bring anything new to the game!
That’s not what updates are for.
Updates are there to fix bugs and issues with various DLCs. So updates do bring something new to the game—namely, bug fixes.

And with every update, there’s also a new core update, which is also necessary.

If you don’t want updates, just turn off the update feature.

WOW! Guys, I’m really appreciate your responses!!! :D

But something’s not right. It must be some sort of bug. Today, there was another 7.7GB update for TSW6 waiting for me… I have a decent 600 Mbps internet connection, but it’s no use if Steam delivers updates at a speed of less than 100 Mbps.

Yes, but my copy of TSW6 takes up 24GB in total, so this "update" is practically a third of the entire game, including all the DLCs!

Sadly, I can’t find an option that would let me block updates for just one game.

I’d have to switch the whole Steam client to offline mode. But I don’t want to do that, because updates for other games… well, they actually add something to the game apart from just making room for new DLC, which I won’t be buying anyway.

Just out of curiosity, has DtG fixed that bug where the passenger display shows ‘Not in service’ on all trains? Or are you still using that temporary home-made patch from a community member?

Because for a while now I haven’t set foot outside the Medway Valley beyond Gillingham, and this DLC isn’t affected by that bug ;)

You know, on the MVL route, most of the TSW6 bugs don’t really affect me, so I’m not exactly in a rush for those updates from DtG. What can they possibly improve? They’re not going to rewrite the passenger AI from scratch, after all. Not before TSW99 is released.

But how do I disable this update feature for a single game? I’d be grateful for any advice!

    I am honoured :D

Find out what's wrong and get it fixed then, I have a decent 550 Mbps connection and steam doesn't throttle it at all.

You get it fixed and a 7GB download will be under 2 mins and we can all go back to saying "I’ve Had Absolutely Had Enough Of These Frequent Massive Updates!" in the most sarcastic voice possible.

The biggest pain with MSFS is that you don't know it needs an update until you launch the sim, at which point it starts to download updates, slowly. Apparently it's because of the way it is set up, that the updates are downloaded via the sim and not just via Steam in the background (one of Steam's biggest selling points). Nothing worse than coming to "do a flight" and finding that you spend the whole day downloading updates just in time to turn it back off and go to bed...

I’d be more concerned why you are getting updates over a bank holiday when a) no one else is and b) DTG shut down Thursday for a 4 day weekend (alright for some)

He's not really, it's an update from two weeks ago which everyone else has already downloaded. As far as I'm aware these updates are once every few months, if that, and they're only massive if you happen to be on a very slow connection. For most people a 7Gb update takes a minute or two to download. This also the same person who posted a thread six months ago demanding DTG produce a "massive overhaul" of passenger logic (that should presumably be posted to us on a DVD)

If you're getting updates every day then it could be a shader pre-caching update. I disabled them some time ago but if I remember correctly they are around 7GB and do take a while to install. It's not just the download time, but also the time taken to process the update and write it to disk. However, I thought that these updates were only a problem for people who use Proton. What operating system are you using?

    Edited for clarity.

Every game has its own Properties page. In the Steam client, click on Library at the top, then right click on the game and select Properties | Updates. Here's a link to the relevant instructions from Steam Support:

You're right! That's exactly what's causing this 7GB ‘update’ that's been plaguing me. Thanks for the clue! You've solved my problem.

I do actually use Proton because I run Linux.

And of course, I apologise to Dovetail Games for my unfair criticism, as it wasn't their fault.
    Sorry, guys!

There's no issue with my reading here... He's moaning about a problem with his own PC repeatedly downloading updates and blaming it on DTG, whilst simultaneously being the author of separate threads demanding major updates.

I time my updates for when I'm not playing on Steam, then they can upload in the background while I'm doing other things.
Maybe the OP doesn't know how to do that?

It's a bit technical, but I actually use it on several games. It's one half of the process used to roll back steam installs to earlier patch states. What you can do is, after flagging the game's update behaviour to "Only on launch", then go and find the appmanifest file for the game (look up its id on steamdb) in your steamapps folder. Open that with notepad, and set stateflags to 4, stagingsize to 0, downloadtype to 4 and autoupdatebehaviour to 1. Then find in Steamdb the current manifest id for the latest depot, and overwrite the current one in the appmanifest file with that, save that file as read only and when you restart steam next, the available update will go away.

You need to open the file and manually update the manifest id every time a new patch drops and an update shows as available for the game, but each time you do that and restart steam, the update will go away as you have tricked steam into thinking it is installed.
