I’d imagine that whatever the core routes are for TSW7, it’s simply been impossible to get them running on gen 8 which has probably forced their hand.

Which makes me worry about performance on my PC... I'd probably be best off waiting for rewiews and asking the community about performance before spending any money on TSW7.

Please check the available TSW 6 DLC; it only includes DLC locomotives (and not all). Routes haven't been supported for a while now because it's simply impossible, especially since Gen 9 already has optimization problems so imagine what it will be like for Gen 8.

If there were players, I don't think they were expecting new routes to play and were just playing the old ones. It's sad for those who can't afford an upgrade, but the fact that TSW isn't very optimized and that Gen 8 is now old means it was bound to happen sooner or later; besides, it's not just TSW, many other games no longer support Gen 8.

If DTG manages to make the actuals routes accessible, it will be with terrible performance with reduced timetable for Gen 8 and they will pay the same price as everyone else; I don't think it's a good solution for players and DTG who waste time doing this.

To be honest, Gen8 should consider themselves lucky that the last 3 editions of the game even supported them...

Unfortunately, there is only so long you can keep extending the life of obsolete equipment. I think DTG have been pretty good trying to cater for Gen8 as long as they have, but even they know it's time to throw the towel in.

Whilst I acknowledge there may be some people who can't afford new equipment, people have to bare in mind even Gen9 is getting towards the end of its life, so to keep expecting something from 2013 to have releases for it is asking alot.

What would be the point in extending the life of Gen8 anyway? For TSW7 not to be able to be supported on it anyway? For most DLC in TSW6 not even playable? It's not as if they have been kicked out completely anyway. Any pre existing stuff can be kept and can be continued to play with.

DTG politely extended the life of Gen8 during the 'cost of living' issues in the UK...

It's been a long time coming and unfortunately people have to accept Gen8 is obsolete. If people can't move on that is not really DTGs fault. Gen9 has been out for 5 or 6 years now, so it's not as if it is brand spanking new itself.

It's a natural progression. Otherwise we'd still be lumbered with PS3, PS2, and PS1 content... There has to be a cut off point and this is it. There's been plenty of time to adjust.

Unfortunately, none of my family has the money to get a PS5 or a PC, I guess I'll have to stick to TSW6 for now
Well, I use a Gen 8 console, so for me there won't be a TSW7. (at least for me)
And a PS5 costs around £400, which is just an insane amount of money for a console and really pricey...:(

Just to add, without giving specifics, broadly speaking, we have <10% of players on consoles who play using Gen-8 systems, and I think as part of reviewing the support, we of course considered the impact for this audience alongside our team's ability to keep supporting key performance improvements and ensuring gameplay is the best our teams can make it.

Jan, can you specifically say when you're removing content and which it was instead of having to guess which it was and it not connecting with previous discussions? Can be replying to something that was "removed" and then it doesn't make sense.

I posted legitimate specs for a 2013 PC compared to an XBox One and said most PC games don't run on Windows 8. I don't consider that "ridicule." It wasn't personal. It wsan't "heated" at all. It was a data based statement that expecting a 2013 system to be competitive in 2026 isn't realistic.

It was a genuine suggestion that someone could offer an ETS version for trains... or offer TSC for older consoles. I don't know that it's economically viable, but those are valid ideas.
If the interpretation of "ridicule" is that broad then no one can ever criticize anything anyone ever says because a simply because a "person" said it.
Every idea has to come from a person so tying a person to every idea and making that idea immune to criticism means you can't have a discussion.

Thanks for the reply, actually it's not surprising because there's little new content, it's like the player percentage on older TSW games.

DTG kept TSW on Gen8 as it was making them money. Don’t kid yourself.

Also, I think your entire post might be the most condescending thing I’ve ever read on this forum.

Condescending how? He didn't insult anyone.
He said 13 year old systems are obsolete.
That's just a statement of fact.
Nothing is saying you are "wrong" for using them.
A car with 300,000 miles from 2013 is an "old" car, but if you want to drive it, go ahead but it's up to you to find parts that aren't made anymore. You are entirely free to drive your fun old car. That doesn't mean the auto parts store has to stock parts for it. They aren't "insulting" you as a customer.

The only real advantages they can get on the short term is on the integration/deployment of new builds. Since prior messages from Matt revealed that each platform gets a specific build, this dropping of Gen 8 hardware would reduce that by 2 at least, depending how the hardware variants were treated. Improves the development experience, and leads to less worries for 3rd party teams who probably had to just trust that their content will work for Gen 8.

Which for the customer might result in patches being delivered faster, or a minimal increase in quality, since the content also has to be tested on 2 less platforms and more tests can be done in the same available time. This is not a guarantee at all that anything would change, when the performance issues are existing on Xbox Gen 9, and Series S will become the lowest tier of hardware the game will be available for.

Telling people they’re lucky to play a game they paid for, on a platform that the publisher chose to release it on, is not factual information. Neither is saying DTG extended an entire console generation’s lifespan.

Removing two supported platforms will be pointless unless significant performance improvements are made on the remaining supported platforms.

I actually thought they were dropping Steam. I saw part of a news post on Steam and was surprised. They aren't abandoning it, right?

You could also get all of those for dirt cheap five years in, and the advancements between consoles were a lot more apparent. It was both literally easier to upgrade them, and also figuratively easier since it was easier to sell the upgrade at a glance. 9th gen are fine upgrades, but they're refinements rather than revolutions, expecting everyone to upgrade to them is like expecting everyone to upgrade to Blu-ray from DVD just because VHS died off in my view.

Gen8 may have been making DTG money, but it was also costing them time and money. Continuing development for a 13 year old console makes absolutely no sense, especially if the version for Gen8 is a shadow of the actual product, but at the same price.
I feel for the people that do not have the finances to upgrade, but such is life.

Whether this decision is a benefit to the game itself going forward, that's another question entirely, and only time will tell.

That is not the important part. The main reason you cannot compare ETS2 with TSW is because ETS2, like most games, never simulates anything beyond player vision, unlike tsw which have to do many calculations for a train 100km away. This also applies somewhat to TSC, it's in-house engine btw.

No it is not, I think you've just decided to take offence for no apparent reason.

I've said it's obsolete and that they are lucky the last few editions of the game have even come to Gen8 given how old it is... You also didn't bother to read the part where I said "it's not as if they are being kicked out completely as they can still play their pre existing downloads".

Such an oddly emotional outburst for a post that I considered very polite and not condescending in anyway, and you have deliberately misinterpreted my post.

Anyway, that will be my final word on that particular matter. People can draw their own conclusions should they be interested.

Pro-rata, today's consoles are not really that expensive compared to previous gens. Yes, they may be viewed as overpriced, but there are many reasons for that. UK Wise, PS3 Launched at £425 in 2006. PS4 launched at £349 in 2013.
Covid, AI, Data Centers etc.etc. have all contributed to things getting more expensive, but relatively speaking consoles have managed to stay reasonably affordable.
Still sucks if you cannot afford one though.

And it was famously considered vastly overpriced, it only did well once they gutted it of features and had massive price cuts. 360 & Wii did vastly better because the PS3 was so expensive you could buy both together for less. It only started doing well after they gutted it of features to get the price down, because its original price point was such a failure.

Keyword being launched, PS3 would've been still on sale and it was half or a third the price of PS4 at that point. And you would've actually had years of games ahead of you at that time, Persona 5 came out in 2017 for example, and was a major hit that year. And common wisdom for the time is that it makes zero sense to buy consoles at launch unless you REALLY badly want to play it early on. Even a year would get you major discounts compared to buying at launch.

If you looked the PS4 five years after launch, you would've had it down by a fourth at standard pricing. And black friday deals would've allowed you to buy it at half price very easily, often with a game included as well. This by extension also pushes used pricing really low as well, meaning realistically a lot of deal savvy people would've probably gotten them for $150 or less. (Using US currency since that's what I know best)

Fast forward to now and the Switch, the oldest mainline console still regularly sold is still at its launch pricing, with the only major thing they changed is now sometimes they include a game for free with it. And that's not gonna last a lot longer in Europe due to new battery regulations. Meanwhile current gen pricing is horrid, with pricing for all of them being higher than at launch (Sans Switch 2 which is still a few months a way from its price increase, but that's not far away), something basically unprecedented in the gaming industry.

Launch pricing is a very small slice of the pie, the bottom is much higher now factoring in the lack of real price reduction over the past five years.

I write this as I look at my closet full of Serial port cables, Parallel cables, centronic cables - 3/12 inch and 5 inch floppy drives -- Cartridges of a few beloved games from the old TI - 994A, 9pin din connectors - PS3 console and now a PS4 console I bought for my grandkids - that are now entering college :) .

I would hate to think that future development of any program would have to be bound to the capabilites of this old tech. I even have a gameboy that my wife racked several hundred hours on playing Teteris. Of course the capabilites of that gameboy pale in the shadow of the Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately - tech and time moves on.

Since much of the content for TSW5 and below still work on the Gen8 consoles - nothing is beeing taken away - Just future releases will not be available and even though I have several hundred hours playing this franchise - I still have loads of content of those older routes (even going back to Sand Patch Grade) that I have not run looking at all the timetables.

As I stated - nothing is being removed from those on Gen8 systems - They keep what they have paid for. If they want future DLC - a decision will have to be made to upgrade. And if the 90% figure stated by DTG Alex is on Gen9 or better - it is a wise business decision since whether on not people like it - DTG is a for profit business.

With respect, something doesn't add up here. There are plenty of players who freely admit to using ageing pc's with ancient graphics cards and minimal memory, all well below DTG's recommended specs, probably performing at or even below Gen8 levels. But you are still going to sell future dlc to anyone who can access Steam or Epic.

So why not make future dlc available to everyone including Gen 8 players and let them decide if they want to download and play them.

That 10% has to be in the hundreds ( thousands? )of players at least. Can you really afford to lose them? Aren't they the ones who kept TSW alive in the early yearx?

Dropping Gen8 support wasn't a decision taken lightly. It does free up some time on the team to spend more time on the other platforms, yes. But it was more about taking a critical look at the quality of the experience on gen8 platforms, what it would take to actually lift it up to a place you could be happy with it and then the likely *drop* in quality that might have on gen9 and pc platforms.

I've said in the past that gen8 wasn't having a major impact on gen9 - but there are *some* areas it did. We'd worked around many of them such as with custom timetables (which now don't need to be authored and tested and time that can be spent on the gen9+pc experience) but some such as scenery density you really can't work around and those were starting to hold things back - you were getting to where keeping things where they were was leaving very little left to actually run trains on and the result wasn't good. Short of making everything bespoke for gen8, you are then left with the choice of putting something out that's just not good enough, or dropping it and being up front about it. We've had fewer and fewer DLC releases where we felt gen8 delivered and acceptable product too.

We kept Gen8 supported as long as we could, but detail levels are going up all the time, features in the game are constantly being added, and this is raising the bar - and eventually, the gen8 experience combined with the number of players left on gen8, it just didn't make sense any more.

I saw commentary on PC prices earlier and they did make me smile. I just got a Steam Machine for £1200 and I haven't used the 4080 PC since the day it arrived - more than good enough, and doesn't kick out all the huge amounts of heat that the big one does (which is why I haven't used it - normally in the summer I just don't play games that much because this room turns into an absolute sweatbox). So - yes £1500 should buy a more than capable machine, as long as you're not expecting 4K at 120fps, you can probably go under £1k and still get something that runs well enough to enjoy it.

Remember - almost any PC will outclass a gen8 console, and to some extent a gen 9 one, certainly the series S, because you've got dedicated VRAM. 16 whole gigabytes of main ram, with 8 gigabytes of VRAM. Compare that to the Series S with 10gig of main ram including the VRAM all in one bunch, or the Series X which is basically the same plus 6gb of weird slow ram for ancillary purposes, and the PS5 which has 16gb of shared - all significantly under a low end PC.

Sure, if you feel that 4K 120fps is the bare minimum, then you're paying for a top tier experience, but you can play on PC for much less than that even in todays nightmare landscape for pc parts.

Still - i'm aware it's a lot of money, and even for the consoles, it's a lot of money, but at the end of the day something had to give and so a tough decision was made.

As the post says, TSW6 remains fully available and with content for those who are unable to upgrade, and anything you own once you are able to upgrade later will still come with you (as long as you stay on the same platform, same as usual).

All I'm going to ask in this post, is that those of you fortunate enough to have gen9 or PC please not be unpleasant to those who do not, there's no good way to give or receive this information and trying to tell people how they should feel or anything isn't helping anyone.

In terms of optimisation, work on textures is ongoing, we're testing some new changes at the minute (which i've posted about elsewhere), and the consoles, particularly Series S will continue to keep the team on their toes - there remains no slack and the team continue to need to step up their game on optimisation across various disciplines.

    Matt.

Perhaps one more note on the gen8 situation - one area that's definitely not visible to the player is specific to PS4. The PS4 doesn't actually support any patching post-release of DLC, at all (I know.. right...?)

What this means is that if we want to modify a piece of released DLC in any shape or form, we have to put a copy of those changed files in the core package. Sometimes that's small, sometimes it's huge.

The net effect of this is that over the lifetime of a TSW release, what starts out as a 3gb file becomes a 50gb file - a pain to download, fills up the drive with waste, but from our teams perspective, every time they're testing new builds it means a 50gb file download, plus all the dlc's to be downloaded, installed - ps4 was always a pain to test in this respect. Xbox One is fine, it does allow DLC's to be updated, so the core package didn't grow like this.

However - the amount of time spent downloading and installing those enormous PS4 packages was not insignificant, so once again, this leaves more time for the other consoles and pc to be tested. And yes, PS5 *does* allow updates post release to DLC :)

    Matt.

That's not how consoles work, it's a far more curated experience, and there's a general expectation you hit at least a stable-ish 30FPS on console. Yes, some games run worse, but then those games also usually get ripped to shreds over it. Probably a big reason why 8th gen player counts on TSW are so low now frankly.

Seconded. Perhaps that's what I find most distasteful, though I still think that having access to future dlc with an ancient PC and not being able to afford to replace it is pretty much the same as being stuck with a gen 8 console without that access.

So, an Xbox one, *broadly* equivalent on a PC would be something like:
Intel Core i5-2500, Geforce 660, 8gb Ram. - but this would outperform an Xbox one a bit in some areas.

The intel CPU there is an 4 core desktop cpu running at 3.3ghz, and the Jaguar cores on an Xbox one are more like low power laptop/tablet processors, running at 1.75ghz.

    Min spec for TSW is a Core i5-4560 @ 3.5ghz, 8gb ram and a Geforce 750ti with 2gb VRam.

Also - the PC spec is 8gb main ram + 2gb vram. The xbox one actually offers around 5gb of usable memory, shared between main and video - so broadly double the video memory on that PC.

I think if you're gaming on that, your expectations are firmly on the ground, and your machine is so far below min spec for TSW, the store page for the game is absolutely not selling the product to you - the fact you can still buy it, is a decision steam make.

I'd argue if your PC is Xbox One equivalent spec, then you haven't been enjoying TSW for a long time already :(

Really happy about this one. I know theirs always an argument about about last gen players who can't afford a new console but It's been almost 6 years. A person could save 50 cents a day and be able to afford a current gen console in that time frame and a bunch of the generations best games

Six years, but don't forget that the gen 8 started becoming obsolete (in general) less than a year ago, before that, you could still play on it; it worked well. Not everyone thinks about buying a console due to lack of time or other priorities.

Excellent news and long overdue. The game needs to be moving forward and progressing not constantly looking back over its shoulder into the long distant past.

    The time had come.

I do genuinely feel badly for people who were waiting to upgrade. Historically, waiting until a new console launches to buy the previous version (E.g. buy PS4 when PS5 launched), etc was a way to save a huge chunk of money if you didn't care about playing the very latest releases. Not only the consoles, but the games themselves tended to be very heavily discounted.

Late adopters to Gen 9 not only haven't saved a penny, they've gotten a double-hammer of the price increases themselves making the consoles more expensive than launch, but also inflation making their money worth less than it was at launch. The longer lifespan of Gen 9 (going until 2028 minimum probably) v Gen 8 v Gen 7 has exacerbated the inflationary effect. Same thing has happened on the PC side with memory and GPU prices skyrocketing in recent years.

It's pretty unprecedented for the hobby and I don't think anybody really knows how it will all shake out.

Gen 8 was already old a year ago too. It didn't run great then. It's just gotten to the point where it can't be ignored anymore.
Like losing your vision or packing on the pounds when you get older.
It doesn't just suddenly happen, but eventually you start to notice how bad it's gotten and once you notice it...you can't stop noticing it.

However, there's also generationally old and chronologically old.
The XBox One was made from 2013 to 2020, so you could have an original that's 13 year old tech and 13 years old components...or you might have one that's 13 year old tech with only 6 year old components.

Still old tech of limited capability, but an older system with aged components would run even worse combined. That's just how the world works. Getting old sucks.

What I meant by obsolete is that games started coming out on gen 9 only more and more (it started with a few games before, of course, but we were still in the period of "cohabitation" of the two generations, now I've noticed since the previous year that there are fewer and fewer games for the 8th generation ), and even when some games came out on gen 8 there was a graphical and perf difference compared to Gen 9 (normal) but it was still "playable".

On GEN8, Leipzig - Dresden had just one train to drive with (BR442). That's not optimizing, but just cutting back to a bare minium.

Current GEN still needs a lot of optimizing and ofcourse there is also a Series S with less RAM and less GPU power.

So don't worry about that, I hope they put the time they win with not supporting GEN8 in optimizing for current GEN.

It's understandable that DTG have made this decision and since the first DLC release for only Gen 9 and PC this decision was to be expeted.

As someone who plays TSW on Gen 8 I drive mostly on TSW 3,4 routes, but also on some newer routes like Mittenwaldbahn. The only TSW 6 route I have some time spent with was the Riveria Line.

Oh well, guess we have come a long way and it is with a heavy heart that we announce that Gen 8 just cant take these demands anymore, RIP Gen 8 Consoles 2020-2026, Any thoughts? Or maybe a *Gen 8 Miracle* May happen in the future? Who knows?

My only real question is why did you start another threat about the same topic?

Didnt we just had to prove to DTG that general discussion isnt a total mess?

Great points, and I am well aware, since I have purchased or wasted money on all of the above and more, going right back to PS1. I was simply making the point that right here and now, a decent console is not ridiculously expensive, relatively speaking. Are they overpriced? Probably. But each persons perception of value is different.
We have been spoilt in past, my PS4 slim was £149 with a game, brand new, which is around the same price 16gb of ddr4 currently sells for.
For now at least, those good times are gone, and people need to realise its not going to end any time soon.
I respect the decision by DTG. Early on, TSW was ok on Ps4. But we all wanted more. Better graphics & lots of layers etc. The experience became somewhat painful. I was lucky, and built my PC around 6 months before the prices started to rise. I certainly could not do it today.
I have sympathy for those affected, but the game needs to move forward.

They can't make it playable even on 9th gen... Shame.
