This is most evident from directional audio sources. In real life, both your ears will hear the sound coming from a directional audio source even if only one ear is pointing towards it. In game however, take the example of any diesel engine. If you stand perpendicular to its sound direction, the audio of the engine will come only in one of the ears and the other ear will not have the sound. This is kind of nauseating. Is there any fix for this or is this just how the game is built? Thank you.
I never noticed engine sounds coming from one side. I do not play with headphones on, but my left and right speakers are placed in a way I should hear sounds coming from one speaker. Also when I watch youtube vids from TSW with headphones, I never noticed it. Besides my own experience, I never saw anyone complaining about this. Maybe you can add some examples of trains/routes where you noticed this, so others can check this out.
It’s just how the game is built. It’s got the kind of highly directional sound that I assume would be helpful in more traditional games where you might want to know what side gunfire is coming from so you can turn and shoot back or to hear footsteps creeping up on you from one side. It is not at all realistic. It also has the effect of making things that are directly behind you appear quiet, only getting louder if you turn your head (the camera) to one side.
Spawn in an HST in free roam, stand looking parallel to the direction of moving and perpendicular to the sound source. The engine sound will only come in the ear facing the engine.
Do you play with headphones or are you speakers placed far apart from eachother? If you want to hear where the sound is coming from, they need to mix the audio over one channel. On speakers, not placed to far from eachother, you will here slightly where the sound is coming from, but you hear the sound in both of your ears. However, with headphones or speakers placed far from eachother, you will hear the sound coming from one side. Especially with headphones, your ears can't mix the sound coming from both sources, so one ear only hears the right and the other the left. If they mix the sound more to the middle, you won't hear anymore where the sound is coming from.
I play with headphones, although the sound mixing should be done by the game itself, right? I haven't had this issue in any other game (other than some FPS games which require sound direction). RDR2, GTA 5, F1, etc. all have sound mixing done properly that both my ears can hear everything
Well, if they mix it for headphone users, then the stereo balance on speakers will be an issue or not excisting. As said, I have no sound issue with speakers. This is just an headphone thing, irl you also don't listen the outdoor sounds trough a headphone. Normally both your ears do hear all the sounds, whatever the direction it comes from is. With a headphone it's strickt left and right with no mix.
