Western Region Locos Introduction The West Somerset Railway route is not only lacking in steam locomotives, which I have mentioned in a previous poll, but it is also lacking in locomotives from BR's Western Region. Considering that the West Somerset route was located in that region and the uniqueness of Western Region locos, I believe that it is important to recreate these locomotives for the WSR route in a new Diesel-Hydraulic dlc. The Locomotives BR Class 52 'Western' The Class 52 was the primary InterCity locomotive used on the Western Region until replaced by the HST. No. D1010 'Western Campaigner' is preserved on the West Somerset route in Maroon livery as seen above. BR Class 35 'Hymek' The Class 35 'Hymek' was primarily used on secondary passenger services and on freight services across the Western Region. D7017 is preserved on the West Somerset Railway and D7018 is currently under overhaul at the railway. BR Class 42 'Warship' The Class 42 'Warship' was primarily used on passenger services in the Western Region and one is preserved on the WSR, D832 'Onslaught'. BR Class 14 The BR Class 14 was briefly used in the 1960s on short freight and shunting services. D9526 is preserved on the WSR, with D9518 under overhaul on the route. Conclusion The Western Region locos are unique examples of diesel-hydraulic locos which are missing from the WSR route. The WSR is a perfect route for these locos to be added to, as the route has a large collection of diesel-hydraulic locos including all of the above locos.
I really want these locos on the route in the future. Atleast one steam loco and one of the diesel-hydraulics.
Do not forget the early NBL offerings of classes 22 and 41. Also they should be added to GWE as specials (railtours and such).
Would love to see these added to both GWE and WSR if only on 'specials' a la ECW. Similarly why not NTP and TVL. One of the most disappointing aspects of the game is the inability to utilise locos across all compatible routes. As boring as I find GWE it would be more fun with the addition of the Westerns and/or 47's for example. WSR would be all the better for Class 40's, 37's and 33's albeit in BR Blue/RF grey. NTP would be perfect for seeing if a 31 could actually make it up redbank fully loaded! Sadly there are all but pipedreams but certainly any British diesels will always get a thumbs up from me. Here's to Warships, Hymeks and Teddybears!
It shouldn't (necessarily) be ignored that HST has run over the length of WSR on a number of occasions. Also the Class 59.
