The Cass Scenic railroad in Cass, West Virginia was once a logging railroad owned and operated by the Mower Lumber Company. The line as originally built by the West Virginia spruce Lumber Company in the early 1900s and ran from Cass, to Bald Knob via the now abandoned town of Spruce. The Mower Lumber Company acquired the line in the early 1940s, and continued operations until 1960. The line was then opened to tourists in the mid 60s and continues to operate today. During it's early years of operation, the Cass Scenic Railroad operated a stretch of track called the Durbin Line, which ran from Cass to Durbin along the Greenbrier river, however, due to severe weather most of the Durbin Line was washed out. At the time of writing this a large portion of the Durbin Line has been rebuilt. The motive power on the Cass Scenic Railroad consists of geared steam locomotives built specifically for logging purposes. Shay locomotives #2, 4, 5, 6, and 11 are in operation as well as Heisler #6. The railroad is also restoring climax locomotive #9 to operation as well. In my opinion, the Cass Scenic Railroad would make a great addition to Train Simulator as well as the Unique locomotives that operate on it.
Seems like something great to see. For starters, you could buy britkits shays: http://dickyjim.com/steam.html
I'll do you one better: Have the entire C&O Greenbrier Division put into the game. One would still have Cass Scenic, but the Durbin Rocket section would be in, plus the rest of the old mainline that's no longer around anymore.
It's a shame the majority of the Greenbrier Division was ripped up and turned into a trail. Would've made a fantastic heritage/tourist railroad. Could've been America's equivalent to the Great Central in the U.K. Here's a link to an article talking about the line: https://abandonedonline.net/location/chesapeake-ohio-railroad-greenbrier-division/
This is a video of a bunch of audio recordings of various whistles that've been on the engines of Cass over the years at spots along the line. The whistle at 6:50 is certainly not a whistle I'd wanna wake up to. I'd be grabbing my Bible and a shotgun with the intent of defending myself!
Well then you certainly wouldn't want to live near a branch line that the Pennsy H10s or I1sa's were assigned to! The PRR Banshee whistle was a standard feature on both those locomotives.
Buggers would have me crawling out the woodwork the first few times. But I'd probably get used to 'em. And I've heard crews didn't much like 'em on the I1sa's to much and put in enough complaints that the class eventually got Pennsy's standard three chimes put on 'em. Correct me if I'm wrong in that regard though.
1: Cass Scenic does have at least one or two diesels rostered, I THINK, correct me if I'm wrong though. 2: If the entire Greenbrier division was to be added, yes, there would be Chesapeake & Ohio diesels depending on what year the route is set in. 3: What's a "locolomotive?"
I'm thinking F units but there may be some first gen road switchers too. A quick YouTube search could either prove or disprove me.
OOH!! I just started thinking about the scenarios on this route, be it just Cass or the entire Greenbrier Division, set in the peak of fall colors, and the sheer amount of screenshots one could get in those scenarios. Talk about some fantastic shots.
I like your thinking there steammaster4449 so if i had to vote if i wanted to see this route it would not go under yes it would go under Hell yes i do want to it happen!
In keeping with the mindset of my suggestion of making the entire Greenbrier Division, here's a video of the Durbin Rocket.
Let's have some articles talking about the trail that the majority of the old Greenbrier Division got turned into shall we? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenbrier_River_Trail http://wvrailtrails.org/rail-trail/greenbrier-river-trail/ https://greenbrierwv.com/editorials/greenbrier-river-rail-trail https://www.greenbrierrivertrail.com/
