This is a re-creation of my winning screenshot from June 2019, only this time I used the AP class 37 instead of classes 31 and 50, and the Railways of Devon 1985 version of the Riviera Line instead of the vanilla version.

    Here's the original:

I've spent the last couple of days building this scene and finally finished it today! I'm glad to have finished it the day that DSGDDR and the folks at Digital Railroading released their Pennsy E6 Model, because its inclusion in the scene makes it look so much better!

I put this is the competition this week, but there is a tragic backstory to it that I thought was worth telling, but would be a distraction in the competition thread.

The route is the WCML North and the location is the Quintinshill loops. Not many people know, but this was the location of worst railway disaster in British history where on 22 May 1915 227 people lost their lives in a three train collision caused by the negligence of the signalmen in Quintinshill box (who were later convicted of manslaughter). Most of the dead were soldiers on their way to Gallipoli, which is one reason why it is not well known, as the Government deliberately restricted news of it. Because of it's remoteness it was many hours before the terrible fire that resulted was brought under control and there were persistent stories of trapped soldiers dying by their own weapons or being mercy killed by their officers rather than being burnt alive. After this terrible experience almost the entire regiment was declared unfit for service and not sent to Gallipoli; a small mercy for the survivors perhaps.

Whenever I travel along the route in TS the name "Quintinshill" still shocks a little bit when I see it approaching and I am grateful for how much rail safety has improved in the 105 years since then.

IronBladder, when I read your story it sent shivers down my spine.

I remember my grandfather telling me about the Quintinshill disaster. He had a book of railway disasters, which was one of the last things he gave me before he passed away. But there's a little more to the story.

Recently, Caledonia Works had a "sale" where they were briefly offering some of their locomotives free of charge. I picked up a 721 class "Dunalastair I". I was driving it one day when for some reason, the Quintinshill disaster came into my mind. Perhaps I had been going over a viaduct, and it reminded me of my grandfather's story about the terrible crash and loss of life. I started to think that the engine I was driving, looked like it might even be from that period. I remembered the year, 1915. I decided to go online and read about the disaster, to see whether the 721 class was the locomotive involved in the crash.... and it turns out, it was! Out of all the 16 different locomotives that I could've chosen to download that day, I had for some reason instinctively chosen that one.

Below is a screenshot of the 721 class... the very same that was involved in the Quintinshill disaster.

When the Classic Eurostar trains ran from Waterloo to the Channel Tunnel and France/Belgium they ran via the main route via Tonbridge known at Boat Train 1 or the diversion via Swanley and Maidstone East - so whilst we wait for a 373 I recreated part of that with a 374
They are a bit big for UK routes and clip the platforms but it does not affect the run :) Screenshot_Chatham Main Line_51.39361-0.12659_11-33-58 - Copy.jpg

With it nearly being Amtrak's 49th year of operation, I figured I may as well do something a little special. Don't worry, there's phase III and IV versions as well ;)

While looking for a different whistle to use for the PRR K4 on RWA, I came across these interesting reskins. I really like the look of them, especially the green one, it looks like it's fresh off the Southern Railway.

I was watching Green Frog's Chicago Odyssey recently and they made mention of a photograph sequence called "Afternoon in Naperville" and how Emry Gulash did something similar to commemorate the photographer with his video camera in the 60's (unfortunatley I can't remember what the name of the original photographer was). So, to commemorate both of them I decided to create my own sequence in Train SImulator!
    Screenshot_The Racetrack - Aurora to Chicago_41.77990--88.13381_15-02-39.jpg
It's the mid 60's and we start off with The California Zephyr as it races by with 2 E8 units on the head end.
    Screenshot_The Racetrack - Aurora to Chicago_41.77990--88.13363_15-02-31.jpg
Later, a reefer freight roars by in the opposite direction with 3 SD-7's on the head end.
    Screenshot_The Racetrack - Aurora to Chicago_41.78127--88.12596_15-07-44.jpg
On the middle track, a "Scoot" races by, bound for Union Station. Screenshot_The Racetrack - Aurora to Chicago_41.77985--88.13432_15-11-50.jpg
Later on, an F7 A-B-B-A set roars past with a merchandise freight.
    Screenshot_The Racetrack - Aurora to Chicago_41.78012--88.13087_15-11-20.jpg
To end off the afternoon, the Empire Builder flashes by with 2 of the CB&Q's own E8's doing the honors, as they carry the train on its final leg towards Union Station.

These are legitimately amazing. Are you going to assign specific numbers to each paint scheme?

Yes, the numbers you see in the top image should be the final ones. I just have to mess around with the dscv to make sure it assigns the right ones when you put it down.

I gotta ask Brutalist Ape , what are your settings? What do you use? Your photos are always particularly vibrant and/or realistic looking if i can put in one word.

Your in game quality settings, if you use RWE what file/pre-set? Or of your own making?

Thanks. I do use Railworks Enhancer. I have all the enhancements switched on (except sun shadows). I also have all fixes switched on. I have none of the "performance enhancements" switched on (as these decrease quality in exchange for higher frame rates). It definitely made a notable difference to the way light appears in the game, much for the better.

As for the in game settings, I have everything turned up to the maximum. Vegetation detail max, view distance max, etc. I bought a new PC in September 2019 (mainly to get better performance in this game!), so that surely helps.

A few other things that I keep in mind when taking screenshots:
    • Trains always look better from the side that the light is shining from
    • I usually try to make the train fill up the screen as much as possible, often using zoom and composing the shot carefully
    • I try to have an interesting/pleasing background behind the train
    • I usually paused the game and use free camera (press '8') to position the angle I want
    • Choosing the weather, the time of day, and the route, can also give interesting screenshots
I suppose there is one more thing:
    • All the trains seen in my shots are carefully chosen, and they're nearly always custom-consists. Nearly everything uses third-party add-ons (Armstrong Powerhouse or Steam Sounds Supreme). These improve the quality of the locomotives and coaches enormously.
    • Often the exact composition of the train is closely inspired by real photographs or videos, for added realism. For example I often use mixed stock, and often pair locomotives and stock in various liveries to depict a specific time period.
    Hope that was useful!

For those wondering: the route is Signalbox's Speyside Line, the loco is from Caledonia Works, and the wagons are a mix of:
    • Grain hoppers and Bolster C: malkymackay on UKTS
    • GWR Fruit D van: Digital Traction
    • Shocvans: Steam Sounds Supreme
    • Brakevan: LMS 3F 'Jinty' pack
Everything else is from Victory Works packs. I love a good prototypical mixed goods consist!

Thank you! I find that on a UK route with the Armstrong Powerhouse sky & weather pack that 8-8:30pm is ideal for Golden Hour shots like these. 20200512225222_1.jpg 20200512224235_1.jpg

In a rare outing from its typical Waverly Line stamping grounds, ex-LNER Peppercorn A2 no. 60526 Sugar Palm heads a Stranraer-bound boat train on a summer evening in July '62. The locomotive would be withdrawn from traffic just months later in November of the same year; for a Pacific racehorse it is decidedly grimy and had been relegated to secondary routes by this time.

(I was going to do this at Paddington where it was filmed, but the game crashed so I've chosen Oxford instead)

Good heavens! That top shot is absolutely breathtaking. I think this could easily win the screenshot competition, if they do one on bridges in the future. The light in all of them is stunning. Great work!

So, some more real life to Train Simulator 2020 screenshots, 1st three shots are from Tehachapi I took yesterday, the others are BNSF shots from when I chased UP #4014 back in October.

-These 1st two are from just east passed the loop at Tunnel. Note that the 2nd track isn't represented in the route in game as I believe the route outdates the new track (Added around 2016)

The theme of this week's competition is "Freight".

The "no third party content" rule means all my screenshots can't enter, so I'm just going to post here instead:
