Seeing as the new flight simulator is using data from google maps, and the 3d terrain it generates based on its data, how hard would it be to do the same with a train sim? Openrailwaymaps has a ton of data where lines are placed, and I’m sure some algorithms could be made to have the track sections rendered a bit more prettier. Has anyone attempted this yet? It could even be as simple as GEFS

People already use Google data to create new routes
Flight sims don't have to render buildings and other structures close up apart from at Airports.
Trying to make the ground textures more realistic would not gain very much as most of the time you are moving and it is blurred.
And using higher quality textures would use more of the available memory which is causing enough problems

Not a satalite based sim, but you can use ThirdRails Map to track where you are driving using OSM map types and Bing satelite map with OpenRailWayMap layer on top, offering its info like speed etc.

    Have a look at: https://www.thirdrails.org
