It's a busy day just north of Cajon on this wonderful afternoon sometime during the spring of 2008. A northbound Union Pacific empty ethanol train meets a San Bernardino bound BNSF auto train about to pass a clear signal. Also present in the photo is a pair of BNSF ES44DC midtrain-DPUs, assisting a long Chicago bound intermodal train through the pass.

Fantastic run along the North Wales Coast BR Blue Era route. With a heavy 12 coach train, the Jubilee (Stanier 5x) averaged 75mph from Chester to Llandudno. The route is findable at https://www.wotawallysbits.co.uk/nwc-brblue . I'd recommend it for anyone who likes historic UK routes.

Those with an eagle eye might recognise similarities between this and my winning screenshot from December 2019. It featured the same locomotive class, but in red.

I'd like to share a few of my favorite shots I've taken over time.

These were taken during a railfanning scenario at Oroville.

These are some from scenarios I was going to make. (But I still might).

I am currently working on going through old photos and magazines, and recreating scenes in Train Simulator.
    Here is the original...
    IMG_20200519_172916847.jpg
and here is my recreation (I had to sub the CR SD60I for a CSX SD80MAC).

Just got the Stainmore, Shap and Eden Valley route from Steam Sounds Supreme, it was released for those who pre-ordered it today. This shot shows BR Standard 4 4-6-0 no. 75031 on a Darlington - Kirkby Stephen East service as it crosses Belah viaduct (the tallest in the country after the one at Crumlin in South Wales) in the setting sun

The same train cresting the summit at Stainmore, the highest standard-gauge railhead in the country.

Tried my own hand at the recreating-a-screenshot business. Both shots depict Stanier "Black Five" no. 44733 hauling a mixed goods through the Lune Gorge on a cloudy day on 18th August 1962. The original photograph was taken by Gavin Morrison and found in Michael Welch's book "Steam in the English Landscape".

Since everyone's been posting scene recreations recently, I figured I'd dig up one of the recreations that I did a few months ago and repost it here!

Some very impressive screenshots, Buynot, albinopigeon, and JGRudnick! I like the recreations.

I keep coming back to Smokebox's FEF - probably my all time favorite train sim loco. Perhaps his forthcoming Big Boy will surpass it . . .

Here, I have substituted it for the D&RGW consist in the Feather River Canyon Scenario 18EB. It took me multiple tries to get it going on the 1% grade at the start and I couldn't do it with open cylinder cocks. Also, one of my best days firing the 844 - the driver slips I am blaming on the engineer! He can also take the blame for putting 17 on the number board for train 18 . . .

Thank you! I tried my best to recreate the consist wagon by wagon... unfortunately the 12th wagon in the train is an ex-SR standard van in the photograph and I had to substitute it with an ex-GWR one. What's also peculiar is that in the exact spot the photo was taken, in TS there's a large oak tree alongside the line - I imagine that the photographer was perched in its branches to take the photo!

    Shocking! Haha.

In the spirit of real to life screenshots, this time I'm going to match a video with a screenshot.

    GWR steam capture.png

This is Hinton Manor in North Wales, in 1991. The video can be seen here.

    20200103214846_1.jpg

...and here, a Hall class (by Steam Sounds Supreme) on the North Wales BR Blue era route.

And here's a GWR castle on a publicity tour, also in 1991. The video can be seen here.

    GWR capture 2.png
... and here, a GWR castle on the Riviera Line. I know the setting isn't the same, but this is where I got the inspiration for this unusual combination of steam locomotive and InterCity coaches.

An LMS 7F class on a railtour in 1990 can be seen in this video.

The final shot (of an LMS Jubilee class in 1990) really requires you to watch the video, because the coaches only become clear enough to see properly as the locomotive gets closer to the camera. Thanks :)

Edit - it's probably worth me saying a few words about why I've used these grainy old videos, when there is probably much better modern footage available.

When I was growing up in the early 1990s, a series of videos were released on VHS, about the locomotives of the "Big Four" railway companies, that were built mostly between 1923 and 1948 (and continued in service until 1968). These videos were narrated by Peter Woods (a well-known BBC newsreader), and included archive footage from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as newer footage of steam locomotives in preservation.

Most of the footage from the preservation era was taken in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. The videos were released some time around 1991/1992, and I remember watching the first one (GWR Steam) at home in 1992. Those videos made a big impression on me at the time (I was five years old). Just recently, I rediscovered them on YouTube, after probably more than 20 years.

Part of the reason these films appeal to me so much is simple nostalgia. That's why, when I play Train Simulator, I'm often re-creating the exact coaching stock that existed in the late 1980s/early 1990s - because that's how it was in these videos.

This is kind of ironic, because the actual trains themselves running at the time (late 80s/early 90s) were themselves a recreation of service trains that used to run in the 1950s and 1960s and earlier. But my nostalgia for those recreations, is greater than the original steam era itself (which was over long before I was born).

A final note, the late 80s/early 90s was also an interesting period in terms of coaching stock, because the national rail network was switching away from the BR blue era livery towards the newer, "Sectorisation" era colours, as this is reflected in the footage from that era: trains were often a mix of the old colours and the new. Adding to the variety, a range of various 'historic' colours were also used, including 'chocolate and cream', maroon, and various other liveries.

An unknown Class 40 coasts through Tebay with a southbound morning express in 1964. This photo was probably taken from the bridge over the line immediately north of the water troughs.

The extent to which every detail matches up, is impressive.

Have you ever visited the former Woodhead line in the Peak District? It's still possible to see the disused platforms, and the closed up tunnel, which is set above a series of reservoirs in mountainous terrain. It's a good walk if you're ever up there, I visited a couple of years ago, it was pretty funny as I kept comparing the real location to the Train Simulator route. "Those trees shouldn't be there!" Most of all though, I was impressed by how close the route was to the real thing.

I've not been up there but I've always wanted to go for a walk along the old trackbed alongside the reservoir.

Another recreation here, people seem to be loving these! The photograph above is from the same book as earlier, and to paraphrase the caption:

"In this picture, taken from an unorthodox angle, Class 5MT 4-6-0 no. 44762 clambers up to Shap summit with a northbound van train on 28th November 1964. Note that the formation includes a Royal Mail van, a goods brake van and a full brake coach, classified BG for operating purposes."

The apparent lack of distinctive features in the original photo meant I had to more or less guess where the photo was taken from.

In my opinion the hardest thing about doing this, especially with colour photographs, is finding the right balance between the sky and the lighting of the actual scene. I always find that the many, many options of the Armstrong Powerhouse Sky & Weather Pack works very well in this instance.

Another one of these, again paraphrasing the original caption, found at flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels (HUGE collection of steam era photos and more, absolutely recommend a flick through if you've got several hours to spare!

"Stanier LMS Class 5 4-6-0 45368 from Carlisle Upperby (12B) shed is pictured climbing the final few hundred yards towards Shap Summit with this down Class H through freight (possibly the 11:55 Bamber Bridge to Viaduct) and being assisted in the rear by an unidentified 4MT 2-6-4T banker - c.08/1954".

It's summer 1991, and BR 9F Evening star is on a railtour on the Wherry Lines, from Norwich to Lowestoft. This locomotive is a bit of a celebrity, as it is the very last steam locomotive built by British Rail, in 1960. It has a plaque commemorating the fact on its right side. The real engine is today at the National Railway Museum in York.

I always thought (and still do) that the BR 9Fs were the best looking British steam locos ever and still have a modern look, probably because they've never been replaced by anything newer. I have soft spot for Evening Star, simply because its entire life fits within mine, just.

Definitely Riddle's finest design and one of the class holds the record for the heaviest train ever pulled by a single steam engine in the UK, almost 2,200 tonnes!

Today we have a special theme within a theme!
In 1985, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Great Western Railway company, a number of steam-hauled railtours over the former lines of the GWR were organised.

The appeal of this is that all the "modern" locomotives and trains in 1985 are now themselves historic, with their BR blue era colours!

Some screenshots from The Randsfjord Line, a part of Bergensbanen (The Bergen Line) in Norway which is made by "Totte" from Sweden. The locomotive used is the Swiss Re 460 made by Trainworx and it is the big sister of the Norwegian locomotive EL18.

This is at Hønefoss station which connects the Randsfjord Line, the Gjøvik Line and the Bergen Line together.

At Tolpinrud west of Hønefoss. You can see the Bergen Line in the background. Here I am driving on the Randsfjord Line.

Tyristrand technical station. Trains only cross.

Vikersund station. The largest ski jumping hill in the world is located in this village. To the left you can see the Krøder Line (Krøderbanen) vintage line. It goes from Vikersund to Krøderen. Today it is a museum line too and steam trains does even go here during the summer.

That last one is really nice. I like that. It'd make an awesome loading screen if it were to win the competition one day.

It's a sunny day at Bristol Temple Meads, and at least one passenger is looking to make the most of the sun.
