Question for the educated folk. What exactly is a .ap file, what does it do within the game?
Are they safe etc etc et al.
    Slow, not stupid.

    Best

Edit: I note that my in game loco tab file (images) is looking for AP Class XX or Class XX AP (whatever) loco, no image and not loaded.
IE: Class 31-285 Network Rail AP

A .ap file is the file that holds all of the actual game files for your locomotive, route, etc... Think of it as short for "asset pack." It is simply a compressed file structure that can be unpackaged using either 7Zip or WinRAR.

another name for a ZIP file, can be decompressed with any unzip package but I use 7zip for preference

When you do a Steam Verify of Files it checks the *.ap file is in the correct folder and it is the correct size
If it is then Steam will ignore it but if the size is wrong or the file is missing then Steam replaces it.
