I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but is train sim world (the one released in 2018) and the new train sim world 2020 the same game? or did the first one like become the 2020 version? I ask because I was wondering if I buy a physical copy of train sim world will I get the 2020 version or no

Peter, that isn’t what he asked.

All TSW released up until TSW2 (supposedly released next month, Aug ‘20) are the same game. However, you have to think of it as a core game with add ons. If you purchase a physical copy of the 2018 release and add it to Steam, the core will update to the latest version. The add-ons will not change however. If you wish to get the whole TSW2020 package (which is a free annual core update with a package of 3 add-on DLC) you’ll have to buy it. Hope that makes sense.

Despite what some people think, TSW2 is not a new game. It is to all intents and purposes the same game except this time DTG have chosen to charge for the annually incremental update that was once free. Make of that what you will. In doing so, they’ve discontinued support for all previously released DLC. There is plenty of debate on the TSW forum about it but rightly or wrongly, it is what it is. What you must be aware of is the fact that if you buy this physical copy of TSW and wish to keep playing the game and buying DLC going forward, you will need to buy TSW2 because although (in theory) you’ll be able to use your newly acquired 2018 DLC as they are, new DLC will not work with the ‘core’ game you’ve purchased.

Finally, as Peter said, this is the forum for Train Simulator 2020, not Train Sim World 2020.

Are you sufficiently confused? You really should be!

Any reason for a strange comment on a thread from 2020?

Why are you quoting a post from 2020? TSW2020 became a thing around that post, and TSW2 with its core routes built right into the game became a thing after that, so the post is WAY outdated. TS2020 also is no longer available outside of key resellers. Plus this isn't the TSW forum, so can we let this die?
