I gather that the shift + enter keyboard shortcut turns on the alerter, but is there an in-cab alternative for controller only players?

I can't say for that one but most of the stock has a switch "somewhere" in the cab. Just look for a bank of circuit breakers and it might be there. I know the locations for most of the UK Stock :)

Havent tried Sandpatch Grade myself, but according to the Manual the AC4400 does not have an interactive method of enabling the alerter in the Cab. Leaving it to be activated by Keyboard only.

I have been over every inch of that cab, if it's there it's very well hidden. One for the wishlist!

My guess is that in Reallife it either gets deactivated somewhere in the Loco which isnt modelled in TSW or that you simply cant deactivate it in RL.

Yep. I think what we need is an option in settings - "Advanced Mode" - default to off for the newbies but when turned on the Alerter, DSD, AWS, etc. are all turned on initially (and can still be turned off if required)
