I paid for a year because I felt the author of the site deserved it, had no idea it was Matt P until I paid my bill, at which point I was super surprised that Matt P would have any involvement with it.

So the ATS system of selecting the item you want,
    putting it in a basket,
    going to a checkout,
    having to check your email
having to agree the "Terms and Conditions"
and then getting to a page to download is so much slower

It is so much quicker to download something off UKTS than ATS.
    You said in another post
"I got a subscription for ukts for 1 year back in 2018. I used it to get 5 freeware items. And that was that.
I paid for the sub because of the terrible download queue throttle. And because I believe in paying towards what you love."

You have not downloaded for almost two years, but you think it is broken and should be fixed.
You think the Forum you have never used has problems - but you have "received warnings"

It is not as easy to find stuff on UKTS but say you are looking for a Scenario
There are 2127 Scenarios just for TS202x alone.

    Peter

The hobby and "the community" are not joined. In fact there's no actually community with everyone just doing their own thing and not too many "working for the greater good". I've started a few projects myself (such as a website which listed all the UK DLC, which required what others DLCs etc etc) but canned it because there's too many "self pleasurers" out there.

So do what you want to do, not because of some altruistic motive, most people won't care. They just want a better HST cab

Peter, the site has a broken security certificate, is up and down more than a working ladies underwear.

Posters come here when it is broken.

I don't know what you are trying to argue.

I get you love it, but I don't, I have no reason to.

I must be missing something... What is wrong with UKTS? Stuff for free. How terrible. Some will pay a sub.. some will be happy to go into a queue, close the browser, make a brew, and come back to start their download. I've had no problems with UKTS. I can find things quickly and easily, and the search function is actually quite detailed and granular. Is it lightning fast? No. Is it annoying to go into a queue? yes. Do it at 7am and there's no queue

It's due an overhaul and upgrade. String me up on a cross for not budging on that view. And, there's one in the works.

    Yeah, sorry mate.

I guess if everyone's happy with something as it is, no security certificate, intermittent availability and a 90s site design, then that's that really. Case closed.

A UK based 3rd party site that hosts scenario and route maker's content either on a free or subscription basis
No throttling, not limits, but if you want certain stuff then you have to pay the subs
It's hosted by someone that twitch streams and youtube uploads frequently, and has some of the more "well known" creators that upload

They also have some of the larger 3rd party content such as WCML South (the freeware version people keep going on about that needs a load of payware to work) etc etc

You obviously could not be bothered to read post #61 in this thread
The point I am trying to make but you can not see is your attitude to UKTS

You have decided it is broken and should be fixed - but at the same time you claim not to use the site.
So why keep hammering on about what you find wrong and leave the people who do like it to carry on with it.
AGAIN READ Post #61 to see why the site is having problems
Yes people come here when UKTS Is down - and when it is up - like today

Why is the site better than ATS - because ATS only do modern trains
Where are the Steam era stock and locos on ATS
Where are the Narrow Gauge routes and Stock on ATS

And tell me where on ATS is the Ay Valley route?
That is a really great BR Modern era route

But because you only see Modern Trains you think everyone else should do the same

Not to mention the UKTS packs for lofts, bridges, clutter etc... SO MANY freeware routes utilise these resources.. including ones on ATS. It is migrating to new servers, so speed should increase. I really don't see what the problem with the front end is though. Sure, it looks a bit "turn of the century", but the search facilities are actually superb. Look at the search options... who else offers such granularity?

The only negative is the queuing and throttling. I'd rather it wasn't there, but seriously, considering how valuable this has been a resource, I actually feel mean that I never renewed my sub.

I think Duncan's enthusiasm to get involved is being read as a constant moan about the site. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume his enthusiastic zeal is perhaps giving the wrong impression.

See? I can be diplomatic when I want to be :)

Nothing wrong with that, as someone who drive a 43 year old Austin it feels positively modern! :)

There are some very good products on ATS but as said it is all modern period, not everyone wants to just run modern period routes and trains.

Like a dog with a bone, I won't let go :) And yes, it's because I want to be involved. I could make a difference.

And Peter, you are arguing on straight presumption. I read every post, including 61. How have you come to the conclusion that I only like "Modern Trains", as you put it? Put aside that bitter cynicism my good man, and save it for where there is work to do, such as sorting out UKTS, which as post 61 clearly states, Matt is on with. I'm saying it needs an upgrade and an overhaul. Even the sysadmin for the site (Matt) says the same thing and is on with the same thing. I remember when I first uploaded my HST cab work, and your first comment regarding it was "Ah, plugging your own stuff I see", not, "Cool, nice one, thanks for that mate". A little kindness goes a long way.

I've been proper rough lately, but posting here has kept me engaged and I'm almost recovered. I like that. I also like contributing towards my favourite hobby, which I do rather well based on feedback received.

So, yeah, I ain't no bad guy. Just a dude that likes to see stuff shine.

I'll bet. I drive a Golf GTD, in Tornado red, and I wouldn't swap it for anything. My mum had a bright orange Austin Allegro when we were kids. It was utter garbage. With black vinyl seats which melted to your skin in the summer.

They both do/did essentially the same things, but I do not remember the Allegro with any degree of fondness.

On the other hand, the VW Golf GTD is an awesome machine. And it deserves the love I have for it.

Sadly, I even know Brexit types that hate on VW Golfs, because, well, they're not "Jags" or "Landies", scoff scoff. I'm not that type; my opinion is based on merit.

I have had two Allegros over the last few years and both very good cars, nippy, comfortable and handled well, mine both had cloth seats though. My Maxi has plastic seats (well leatherette I think they are called) they can be rather hot in summer if you park in the sun.

My two over 30 year old cars seem to cost less to run and are more reliable than many of my friends modern cars which seem to have repair bills in the hundreds for simple jobs.

I drive mainly as a hobby so enjoy older more engaging cars to drive than the anodyne modern stuff.

However we have drifted off topic it seems.

Yeah, but it's a nice drift. Hubnut likes Allegro's and he's very forgiving towards them. I see the shonky patriotic appeal of sorts. The proposed Allegro looked alright. The end product is really quite woeful. The SU carb is an awful design (Weber DCOE's much more elegant), and the British Leyland A series engine, well, less said about that the better. I had an MG Metro a long time ago, in white, which I did a turbo conversion on with a Weber DCOE40 and a load of custom built parts. I have one photo of it somewhere, if I find it I'll post it. I loved that car, but it was rubbish ultimately.

The GTD is a literal pleasure to drive. It's a grumbly rumbly turbodiesel and it costs less to run than my better half's 1.1LX Fiesta.

    So, yeah, back in topic...

Last word from me as I think I have had enough of heated discussions now but the A series is one of the best, most tuneable engine designs which ever existed and the SU carburettor is a brilliant piece of design, I have had several cars with them and they are easy to tune and set up and give little trouble. The A series engine was in production from 1951 to 2000 so to say it was awful is very misguided in my opinion. It is nothing to do with patriotism just an enjoyment of a certain genre of cars, 70's Renaults are my favourite of all Leyland my second, probably stems from my childhood memories.

Hubnut is great one of my cars might feature on his channel one day, he is very open minded about cars and is a true enthusiast and doesn't discriminate.

Haha, I knew we'd find a common ground, Hubnut is ace.

Look, I'm only coming in with the view that once upon a time we had oil burning lamps all over city streets, these days it's looking like LED's all the way for the future. Contextually, the oil burners were terrible compared to LED's. But, everything has its place in history. The original Mini Cooper was a true machine. The original RS1600 Escort was ace. The Lancia Stratos is my guilty pleasure... insanely impractical but it's a Lancia, styled by Bertone, with a naturally aspirated Ferrari engine. What a machine. And then there's the International Metro 6R4 - a great daily driver :)

I love a good heated debate, so thank you theorganist. You've nursed me through 4 sleepless nights, endless chronic tooth pain and then dry socket too. Much respect to you, and I'll top up that Whiskey bottle of yours sometime.

I am glad I am good for something lol. I don't mind a heated debate but think I have been involved in too many of those lately.

I am happy to live in a modern world but just like keeping some of the past with too, I just think older cars have more character and you have to drive them where a lot of modern cars make us lazy. I suppose I feel a little bit like that about trains, I don't dislike modern trains but I would always take a mark 1 with a steam or diesel or electric loco on the front than a modern emu or dmu. Same with instruments, give me a pipe organ over a modern digital organ any day of the week. I prefer Victorian houses to modern boxes as well. I guess maybe I was born 50 years too late lol!

For the record my whiskey bottle has lasted three years, it was a present and I can't really stand the stuff!

I hope your tooth recovers well.

I drive a 20 year old SAAB, and have owned them for 30 years getting one of them up to over 220,000 miles.
My mobile has keys that you press, (cannot deal with touchscreens, finger trouble).
I live in a roomy Victorian house, good build quality, nice original features and lovely sea views.
My pc is five years old and still on Win7, suits my needs, it ain't broke, why fix it.

Age and experience has taught me that shiney and new is not always best. It's just another way to get you to part with your cash.

I love old Saabs, one is on my bucket list along with around 200 other cars! Had an old Volvo 440 which cost me £275 and cost me a further £150 to run it over 18 months, that was mainly on new brake pads. Brilliant car, sadly the power steering leaked and eventually the pump burnt out after I was too slow in topping it up.

Things aren't really built to last now, I have recently replaced the timer on my central heating, it was a British built one fitted by my parents in 1977, the new Chinese plastic one will probably not last a decade looking at the fragility of it, I can't close the lid on it as it then causes one of the buttons to operate.

We do live in a throw away society, which surely is against all that we have learnt in terms of limiting environmental damage and plastic waste etc! I was bought up (an I am only 45) to repair and reuse where you can.

Agreed, hoarding old tech, wires, useful bits, all often overlooked in 2020. My missus hates wires.

It's my aim to pass the red Golf onto my daughter when she's old enough - it's got the same appeal and flourish to it's build quality as a J94 with a fresh paint job and a ten year boiler pass.

The one thing that really sticks in my mind about Saabs is a cup holder I was once shown in the dash of a 93 I think. Rather than just popping out, it pretty much did a fan dance and unfolded in the most complex way.

Makes me think of the "kiss" method of design... keep it simple, stupid :)

Got to own a mad car once in ones life, I had a Alfa Sud Sprint Veloce, banana yellow, went like the clappers, lovely exhaust rasp.
SAAB 93s are Vauxhalls with a SAAB badge and it shows. :( My favourite was the Classic 900 turbo, fast, comfortable and solid.

Peter if you can't be bothered to read and interpret correctly what people write then please don't bother replying to them.

I will write it in capitals with large spacing groups so you (hopefully) finally understand what I said..

THE ONLY THING I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THE CURRENT UKTS FREE USER DOWNLOAD SYSTEM IS THE QUEUEING, NOTHING TO DO WITH THE THROTTLING....

Apologies to everyone else but it appears Peter is a little near-sighted and needs the extra help in reading other peoples posts.

Way back when I joined UKTS there were no queues. In those days premium members had more or less the same deal as now - fast access mainly dependent on their internet speed (FWIW I can still max out my 320Mbps Virgin connection if I start 10 simultaneous downloads).

The non-premium bandwidth became available at 7:00pm IIRC and there was a fixed amount available every day. When it was gone that was it until 7:00pm the next day. This feeding frenzy is well documented in the locked, older parts of the forums and the bandwidth usually was gone in less than 30 minutes. There were clearly issues since some people could never get a chance at downloading due to being at work etc. and the current system came into force. Over the years Matt has spent more time and effort improving the non-premium facilities than the premium system.

There are ads on the site to support it but the revenue from those dropped to near zero due to the use of ad-blockers so the current system is likely to remain going forward. Some people renew every year but I understand a lot just wait until something comes up that they particularly want and then get a month of premium and fill their boots so to speak.

The certificate issue is a damn nuisance but will be fixed. To be honest there is nothing on the site that warrants HTTPS anyway. All the card transactions are handled offsite by a 3rd party processor as per Matt's previous news articles on the front page of the site.

Thanks Easilyconfused for a concise and informative reply, very interesting, still don't like the queue system but it's nice to know the thoughts and reasons behind it.

    How did we get here?

UKTS is still my preferred forums to go to when I have a question or hunt for information, as someone has already posted that there's a lot of knowledge and help available, I'm sure we all have disagreements I know I do! But I still go there because of the info and generally good-natured banter, yes there will always be one or two you can't get on with but you can go anywhere and get that it isn't exclusive to UKTS in my experience!

Certainly the current issues with the look of the site don't prevent uploading new items - or apparently folks downloading them. I am happy to pay the annual sub in order to be able to share content, download the odd bit or bob, find out stuff I need when building stuff and a host of other things that are on the site and so presumably cost money to maintain. Each to their own but I have always found it a bit odd that a small subset of folks seem to prefer to let others know their short comings rather than go ahead and build something better themselves. Happened to me and no doubt happened to other content devs.

Certainly true, I used to upload quite a few scenarios at one point early on but stopped because of the grief I got from the pimplies about how inaccurate they were and this wasn't prototypical etc etc, So I just lead with "this scenario is not prototypical" that eliminated those that would be wasting their time with my scenarios, I do it for my pleasure and enjoyment and share them freely, we don't have to and that's what they don't appreciate. The "I want" brigade get up my nose.

I agree, I had a little bit of that with one scenario I had uploaded, as I had not changed the headcodes on the diesel loco's. I hadn't even thought about it when making the scenario at the time!

However, I think that is a problem with all download sites not just UKTS judging by comments I have seen on other sites too. I think the majority of people are very grateful.

    Hi Folks

UKTS, as you're no doubt aware, is currently down. I'm mid-way through migrating the data to the new machine (it takes a good 20 or so hours for the export-copy-import process) - aiming for that to be finished any time now and then after work tonight i'm going to start re-pointing DNS and hopefully it'll be live in its new home.

For those expecting a revolution in look and feel, please don't, it will be identical in just about every respect.

I have improved the uploader so it now has super advanced modern features like "progress bar" (woooo!) but by and large the site is identical.

First step is to get it all up and running, then I will get SSL enabled (which will be proper modern SSL and will finally eliminate the SSL warnings you're all getting), and then we can see what to do next.

I have doubled the non premium download queue size, and doubled the concurrent bandwidth on the downloader too, and obviously for premium users it remains full speed, supporting resume and multi-channel downloads.

Once the site is fully operational I'm sure Dad will make an official post announcing such, but I wanted to give you all a heads up and thank you all for your support and patience. Nearly there.

Yes, the site needs a major visual overhaul - it's needed it for about 10 years, but i've just not had the time, UKTS is a massive site and probably a good 2-3 months work to rebuild in new tech (I hadn't fully remembered how much there was until I upgraded it all to support PHP 7 this weekend, there's all kinds of features in there away from the basic obvious stuff).

The Queue is unlikely to ever be removed, I want to make sure there is a clear distinction and thank you to those who support the site financially vs those who are unable or unwilling to do so - it's completely fine, and no file will ever be locked behind a pay-barrier, every file is freely available, premium just makes it go faster, but the site exists purely because of those who pay to support the site or those who upload their work, without either of those, the free access is irrelevant because there is no site.

Anyway, from here in the technical back-end of the server I just wanted to give you all a quick update :)

    Matt.

I think the file Database needs an overhaul but IMHO I think the forums are ok.
They are easy to use and when the "Prosilver" board style stopped and we had to use the "subsilver2" it was not as good.

Once the system is up i'm going to take a pass at trying to cleanse the database a bit, there's just too much stuff in there with 1 file in it, making up thousands of "folders" and making it hard to see anything.

Forum styles are a pain - every customisation needs to be applied to each style uniquely which meant upgrading the forum was prohibitively time consuming, so when I upgraded it to PHPBB3 last time I made the decision to drop the other styles to drop the task to something that was actually manageable in the time I had available.

Unfortunately the UKTS PHPbb is quite heavily customised so any version upgrade is a mammoth task :(

After some major work and some awesome help from some awesome people helping me test - the majority of the site is now running in HTTP mode on the new server. Things like cd orders and paying for premium don't work yet (nearly do), and HTTPS isn't installed yet - i'll do that once everything else is over and do it across all the sites in one hit.

But the library is now accessible for browsing, searching, downloads and uploads. DM me if you have any issues.

I fully acknowledge the fact that you (or your Father) didn't need to do this and especially just because a grumpy old git like me complained about it, so I appreciate the fact that you (or you both) made this decision and concession.

    Thank you.

Yes. The SSL will be fixed once everything else is up and running. Peter - I did also reply to your PM requesting a screenshot so we can work on that tonight. Think it might be another late one.

The exceptionally slow start-up thread doesn't display correctly for me in Chrome others are fine on the forums.

Don't know if this is the right place to post but I still can't log into UKTS... It tells me it's sent a new password but nothing arrives... I've checked junk & spam folders but there's nothing there...

I've even emailed UKTS support but had nothing back off them either...

Email is working before someone says my email account is broken!!!

    Thanks in advance

    Eric
