After Rivet have recently posted their screenshots from the upcoming Isle Of White routes, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the (in my opinion) awful looking bloom isn’t present in this route.

Personally, I think it makes things look a lot more natural as well as keeping colours nice and vivid and vibrant when bloom is disabled. Bloom just washes colours out at makes scenes way too bright.

So I kindly propose for DTG not to use bloom in any of their future routes.

I’ve made a poll for you to vote if you prefer bloom enabled or disabled and have provided some images below of what the route looks like, with there being no bloom.

    BLOOM OFF:

Judging by these screenshots, bloom is nasty. My vote is to get rid of it.

Yes I agree. Be good if you could disable it

I played with Reshade to tone this down, but afraid it's a bit at odds with the UEngine. Gotta reinstall TSW after some time.

You can. I added a line in the ini file.

Every time I try to change something this way in TSW 2 - it doesn't work.
But maybe it's worth another try :) good tip, Anthony

    You can’t disable on console.

Can you show some screenshots of it enabled/disabled in TSW 2 with DTG content?

You can however as mentioned, only PC players can do this. Also, there should really be graphical options to enable and disable these sorts of things. Not having to dig through ini files and changing values.

I haven't looked at the ini file, but it would be great if you could have bloom enabled maybe 20-25%. Enough to help the whites pop out a bit, but not so much that you lose some of the more detailed texturing (like the dirt) that you lose at the front of the train with the bloom on full.

Definitely off is my preference. How do you disable it in the INI?

That is possible. Go into the ini file and add r.BloomQuality=2 or r.BloomQuality=3 depending on your intensity preference.

Locate Engine.ini which is located at ..Documents\My Games\TrainSimWorld2\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

Open it and if there isn't already, add [SystemSettings] in a blank space and underneath it, add r.BloomQuality=0
Press CTRL S to save changes.

Its a bit hard to say really. On the one hand, IoW certainly looks and feels different than all of the other routes so far...but seeing it without bloom is....well...I'm not sure. It feels off, really. It feels a bit cold and artificial, if that makes any sense?
It's different from the Bakerloo screenshot, where that feels really lush and warm feeling.

In my opinion, I still do think that there should be some bloom, but perhaps not to the same extent as it is in other routes? I think something like 75% of what it is right now should work fine.
Really, I think the better option might be to increase contrast a bit, or perhaps bring down saturation just a tad. It's all personal preference however, and there really should be sliders and adjustments that we can access in the settings

I agree. Perhaps not have it fully disabled but with it applied to some extent.

Better still, the bit I highlighted in bold would suit everyone’s preferences, as you could manually adjust these settings yourself with the sliders, to your preferred look. I really don’t know why this isn’t a thing already.

This really should not even be a debate/discussion if it was just added to the options menu.

For me I sit in the middle id rather it on overall in cab due to it adding some distance based hazing/blooming you do find when looking at the sky as the atmosphere is not perfectly clean, I find with bloom off the lighting while cleaner is also flatter in the distance leading to an unnatural feel.
That said the bloom is often far to intense up close....So for taking shots of the rolling stock OFF looks nicer but for me at least bloom is adding a bit to the atmospherics in the distance that is more natural than when its off.

Kind of brings it back to lighting/atmospherics overall in the game a poor so either way its a compromise.

It's like night and day, the difference is huge. Bloom off make things looks much more crisp, the colours have a punch to them. With bloom on everything looks washed out and meh.

I prefer to use r.BloomQuality=3 rather than completely turning it off.
The are several problems with turning bloom completely off. I.e. the sun becomes a plain white circle. The same happens to every light, they just bocame plain white objects.
But I agree that there is no reason why this isn't an option in the settings.

Edit: Some screenshots from night. Bloom 5 (default) / Bloom 3 / Bloom 0

Those are some excellent examples you've provided! I think having it on 3 definetly provides a look that feels just right.
I could only wish that us folk on consoles had the ability to mess around with settings like this :D

It does seem odd that it isn't an option, I don't particularly want to have to go messing in files if I don't need to but I will on this occasion.

londonmidland you’d agree calmly that this is where the editor for the community would be a welcome, as for Console players they can’t edit

I think the reason it isn't in settings yet, is because they are waiting for a UI artist.

The vote so far is overwhelmingly in favour of bloom being disabled.
I really hope this is taken onboard by the development team.

I wish I was a UI artist. It seems they can charge what they want seeing they’re so few in number and so high in demand.

Does bloom off have an impact on the performance of the game?

Then I wonder what kind of system they have build for the menus, if they need an additional UI asset to add one option. Usually you have an artist to design the look and feel, pick-up the font etc... And you then, as a developer, just add items, which are then rendered the predefined way.

I assume not, I think it's more a visual preference people have.

Not at all. Be aware the disabling bloom completely makes the sun into a solid ball as there’s no glow behind it.

For middle ground, I would apply r.BloomQuality=2 or r.BloomQuality=3

Bloom exists, like lens flare and fake chromatic aberration to simulate the look of a scene being recorded by a camera. I always thought this was odd for games (tons do it) because on one hand, you're trying to make a product that makes you feel like you're actually there, but on the other, you're using graphics effects to make it look like I'm watching a movie. Which is it? I think the solution really is just having a bloom on/off switch in the graphics settings. I can't think of any games that force it on you, but the TSW graphics options are strikingly limited so...

One form of pressure is to enjoy the Rivet DLCs as a priority. I'm now totally stoked for the Arosa line when its time comes around.

Well this is a connundrum, I can't locate the .ini file in the WindowsNoEditor folder for Train Sim World 2 - Think DTG have hidden it.

Beyond the WindowsNoEditor folder, where exactly is this .ini file located?

Yes. Another example of this being the FIFA football franchise. Until a few years ago used to replicate their floodlit matches on how a Nike advert looked. Made for dramatic screenshots, but looked way to dark and washed out in game.

...definitely bloom off (or reduced) for me- I think the skies have a much more realistic color that way. Thanks to everyone for posting the comparison pics.

DTG look, octagonal circles!!! :D :D

anyway, something else like lightning, train markers, some route details and generally the sounds (except for the window open) looks brilliants, but not the cab...the cab absolutely not

I hate it too. I get rid of it already by added r.BloomQuality=0 to engine.ini
Nice to see bloom option in game setting too.
