The NYCT: A/C/S Routes would include 3 lines, Two local and one express, underground, elevated, and at-grade levels and would include 7 Termini. Inwood-207th St. (A), 168th St. (C), Euclid Ave. (C), Lefferts Blvd. (A), Broad Channel (S), Far Rockaway-Mott Av. (A), Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St. (S) (<A> Some Rush Hour A trains terminate here). The A is Express while the C is Local. After Euclid Avenue, the A runs Local and the Shuttle runs along in the Rockaways. During late nights The A runs local and does not run to Lefferts. Instead there is a shuttle between Lefferts and Euclid. The route would include 3 yards. 207th St. Yard which is the 2nd largest yard in the system, Pitkin Yard, and Rockaway Yard. The trains that would be a part of this route is The R46, R160, and R179. Below are the Images of the Trains and Yards. Pullman R46 on the Rockaway Shuttle (S). Alstom R160 on the C. Bombardier R179 on the A. 207th St. Yard and Maintenance Facility. Pitkin Yard. Please get support and attention, us NYC railfans need this!
Love this line even tho it’s really long route. I believe the A line has the longest route as being a express train from 168st to Euclid Avenue then any line. I do love those R46s it would be amazing to drive that train fleet
I personally like the design of the R179. Such a shame that they have so many problems because Bombardier did a great job at designing. They just didn’t make it work properly.
these are the only routes id second, tho if necessary i think we can sacrifice the C if dovetail forces us
that stops at Euclid or grant (forgotten, its been like 7-8 years since ive lived in my home city) instead of yoloing it to liberty ave (tho i do swear i have childhood memories of the c being above ground at one point with stations like crossbay/rockaway blvd and others having an a and c logo then all of a sudden the c logo being painted over at least some years just before the stations were renovated, maybe around the time of hurricane irene idk ((tho im not sure, its appearing nowadays to be quite a convincing false memory)))
The C stops at Euclid. And I don’t remember it ever having any overground portions. Maybe you’re thinking about the JFK Exp?
Back in like the 80s or 90s the C train ran from 145th or Bedford Park Blvd to Far Rockaway. (Making it the longest route in the system.)
It's long. But not the longest. That I believe is the F NYCT designs their trains in house (New Car Engineering is the department). Bombardier just did a bad job choosing vemdors for parts and putting it all together. They've also botched Toronto's streetcars and San Fran's new BART cars. SgtBreadSt1ck is actually right. It was 1991 when they shortened the C and reworked the routes in the Rockaways. Before, the C ran from 145th to Euclid and in the rush hours, was extended both ends (Bedford Pk Bl north and Rockaway Park [not Far Rockaway] South. It then became Euclid Ave in the south while the north ends stayed the same till a couple of years later when the B and C swapped northern terminals, making the C end at 168th while the B at 145/Bedford Park.
on a semi related note, the r143,160,179s were supposed to look slightly different at least according to r143 prototype mock-ups http://www.antennadesign.com/Transit/4-r143-160-subway-car https://www.reddit.com/r/nycrail/comments/esl5k3/r143_prototypemockup_at_the_207_street_shops_1998/ im wondering why the got rid of the 2nd window, it looked niiiicccceee
I like the R179s even tho they are terrible. They seemingly shiny metal and brightness and heating seats that have and of course the sounds it makes.
That’s true I hope The mta make different train designs in the future just like our city buses with the navy blue & yellow wraps and sky blue wraps.
That’s true I already like the design on the R211 & R262 I think they look amazing something new and a fresh start. Since we got same old designs for the 2 past Decades. Can’t wait for R211 hopefully this year!!! Even though they do have small similarities with the current tech trains we have today.
You're right. 32 miles for the A vs 27 for the F. Cost and needed space for future CBTC equipment. I was an intern in the late 90s at NYCT. Spent a LOT of time in New Car Engineering talking with the engineers. True. But the pilot trains will come from Kobe, Japan.
I'd mostly look forward to the Rockaway end of the route. I've seen some cab footage and it looks amazing. Unfortunately I didn't do that part of the line IRL yet. I did take it almost all the way to the other end when visiting the MET Cloisters.
I've never been on the A past Hoyt St, but I've seen some nice videos of how it looks after Grant Av when It's on the elevated section, and how it looks as it's on the bridge after JFK Airport.
I've lived out in Rockaway for 30 years. I've also been a conductor on that very line. It's a great view. The section between JFK and Broad Channel takes about 6 mins which, with the exception of crossing the North Channel Bridge, is at around 45mph(those old R46 cars dont get to the speeds they were originally designed for). Infact the call the section between the north bridge and Broad Channel "The Flats". Its completely level.
