I am looking to get a new computer and want to use it to play TSW. I know the recommended settings show GTX970 but is that based on medium or highest graphics settings? Would an NVidia RTX 2060 be too overkill? I suppose I am asking what works best. I have found an I7 processor with 3.6GHz power so that box is ticked, it's just the graphics as there is a decent price hike between RTX2060 and GTX 1660TI. Any help is appreciated. Regards, Mark
It mostly depends on the resolution. For 1080p, the best value options in my opinion would be a GTX 1060 6GB or GTX 1070. The Turing-based GTX 1660ti and RTX 2060 cards offer no (or very slightly more) performance than a Pascal GTX 1070, but the latter is much cheaper on the used market at the moment. Both Nvidia and AMD (Radeon) are launching very good cards at the moment but stock is atrocious and there are no low-end options available yet. If I were you, I would grab something cheap like a GTX 1060 6GB to hold me over until the RTX 3060 or RX 6600 come into stock next year, as they will undoubtedly be better value than what you're currently looking at.
My view on GPU's is always buy the most powerful you can afford in your budget... I was running on a GTX1070 but upgraded to an RTX 2070 mostly for VR reasons - While the performance boost wasn't phenomenal it was noticeable - the GTX 1070 was no slouch, but the RTX 2070 did give many of the VR titles I like a nice boost and works extremely well for MSFS2020. I look at the cost as future proofing my rig. That being said, if money is tight - the 1660TI should be ok depending on the resolution and oversampling you want to run. I hope others that have that GPU will chime in and let you know what they feel from their first hand experiences.
I do very well with an I7 and a GTX 1070 with good fps and everything on high or ultra though I gaze longingly at the RTX cards. I'm probably about 2 years away from a new machine though. People may disagree with me but I'm convinced that my 64GB of RAM makes a difference -how much I don't know.
Thank you all for your help. If it helps, I have no interest in VR. The processor that I am trying to get is an Intel I7-9700KF and my monitor is an Acer G246HL 1920x1080.
I’d go as good as your budget allows. I run a 1440 monitor on ultra settings and at times I’m seeing mid 20s on an i9 10900 and rtx 2080ti. That said winding my neck and settings in a bit I can happily get 120fps
You can pick up a really good gaming P.C from AWD.IT and they are very competitive on price, I picked up an RTX3080 with an i9 9900k miles cheaper than the big names for PC builds.
Just had a look there and I have found cheaper elsewhere for what I am after. I do not want a top end gaming PC if I don't need it (TSW is the highest spec game that I play).
After spending way too much money and accumulating way too many former graphics cards, I've settled on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super with 2047 MBs of memory. This provides satisfactorily smooth images and FPS rates in both TS64 and TSW2
If playing in full hd and not streaming TSW 2 enough is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB VRAM.
Why is GTX970? I personally recommend RTX3070TI The graphics card is not currently on sale, you can wait
Personally I’d stick with any midrange or above nvidia card, as they just seem to work with no problems and a good fps.
I have an I5 6400, a gtx 970 and 24 gb of ram, I play in 1080p in ultra graphics and TSW2 runs between 35 and 80 fps depending on the lines and the weather. I ordered a 1660 S for more comfort, if you only play TSW2 in 1080p then a 1660 S will be more than enough
