The Crown Jewel of Southern Railway's steam fleet was their 4-6-2 PS4s. These locomotives were built in 3 batches by ALCO and Baldwin between 1923, and 1928. They were most famous for hauling the Southern's Crescent Limited between Washington DC and Atlanta GA (the full route of the Crescent Ltd ran from NYC to New Orleands). As such, they were adorned in a Virginia Green and Gold paint scheme to match the consist (the green and gold paint scheme was inspired by British railways). These locomotives were a modified version of the USRA's heavy pacific design. They had 73 inch drivers (as opposed to the USRA's 79 inch drivers), some locomotives were built with Walschaerts valve gear while others were built with Baker valve gear. The PS4s were used in revenue service up until they were retired in the early 1940s, and by 1949, scrapping had begun. Happily, one surviving example of these locomotives, #1401, still exists today at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. These locomotives, would be a great addition to the US steam locomotive market as once again, they are the perfect mid-size steam locomotive which we have been lacking in Train Simulator. What do you all think? Are the PS4s a good choice of locomotive?
Nice idea. These were very beautiful engines. If the PS4s were made, the set needs a Crescent Limited passenger set and also a route. New Orleans, Washington, or Atlanta would be great stops on the route. The Southern Railway route could also include a couple other locomotives and maybe some freight action as well.
Yes! I think some MS class Mikados would make for great freight locomotives if a route were to be made.
Having lived along a former Southern Railway line as a child, I have no other choice but to say YES PLEASE to this one.
