I’m quite curious, what exactly are the specific sounds for locomotives that would be needed? It be interesting to see a list to see if it’s achievable. Do you need physical access to the train or can you record passing trains etc.? Also could one train with the same engine/horn be used for sounds for another?
From what I heard you need to have proper recording equipment, access to the rolling stock in question (as they probably need different angles and recording positions, also maybe the inside) and of course licensing cannot be an issue. They need to be able to isolate the sounds as well.
Depends on how Accurate you want to be... In TSW we have the following units (Not counting LIRR), and they use the following prime movers.... EMD GP38-2 -EMD 16-645E EMD SD40-2 -EMD 16-645E3 EMD MP15DC -EMD 12-645E EMD F40PH-2CAT - EMD 16-645E3 GE AC4400CW -GE 7FDL16 GE C40-8W -GE 7FDL16 MPI MP36PH-3C -EMD 16-645F3B So you may be able to reuse some sound across to other locos, but they may not sound 100% Correct. Horns are the same way too, as each railroad uses a variety of different types of airhorn For example, per Soundtraxx, CSX has used the following airhorns.... -Nathan P3 -Nathan K5H -Nathan K5LA -Leslie S3L -Leslie RS5T
And other versions of the K5 like the K5LLA, K5HL, K5HLB. I believe some of their units also had Nathan K3s. I also wouldn't be surprised if CSX had a loco with a P5 at some point. It all depends on what the builder or railroad installed. Lots of CSX locos have had their original horns replaced by K5LAs.
I potentially have access to 5 different locomotives, 2 alco c424s, 1 rs-18, a gp38 and gp9. horns- some Canadian that I forget and one k5lla
