The UKTS forums were experiencing difficulties logging on, I now find that I spend more time on these forums now, I find to my disappointment that the UKTS forums are getting too toxic for my tastes of late so don't visit that much now not so much tit for tatting here.

At least on UKTS they have Moderators which at times are missing from here.

Yeah, but I feel they are overzealous at times and too judicial with their decisions, imo.

And generally, I feel people here are more gentle-mannered and friendly. Dev's used to post all the time on UKTS but because of that toxicity they don't, and I do not blame them.

This is where the home of Train Simming should be, after all.

Just politics that makes UKTS preferential for some - personally, I think here is great, some great guys knocking about that are prepared to help anyone get along with TS, just for the love of the hobby. And that's the kind of magic TS deserves.

I only ever asked for help on UKTS once, and only ever reached out to Matt P once, seeking a little push in the right direction. I'm disappointed to say that both endeavors were fruitless. 749006 was the guy that helped me along in the end, and that was here - Peter didn't solve my problem directly but did help me realise that the problem I was having just required me to think a little differently about my build path.

So yeah, out with the old, and in with the new, here gets my vote :)

If I have a problem I can ask here and I might get a reply with the answer but if I ask on UKTS I'm fairly sure I will get an answer

In my experience, I got one friendly and helpful guy, who seemed to already know all about my build. Didn't help me solve anything though.

This is the place that the guys with the knowledge to offer should be.

    Welcome!

Some of the toxicity - really just disappointment - builds from the feeling that the developers are running away from the problems instead of at the very least acknowledging them and trying to convince us about the big picture where having these issues is still the best choice. Maybe creating a Legacy team besides the existing Forward team(s) wouldn't help due to ...?
Also refusing to take help from the community. People have offered their testing and building capacities. The most obvious examples are the scenarios, be it a stray loco in your path or a blatantly wrong timetable and train classification. Zero risk, play once, sign, publish. (Ideally there is a way to represent BINs as text and review the changes.)

I'm here for five years but I've seen a fair share of community managers being burned up. The come with a happy heart, they address the community, collect a bunch of feedback, then they start being reclusive, gradually hiding some of the feedback, and eventually disappearing into the void entirely.

Changing the forums is part of the same pattern. This is a Steam game, there is absolutely no need to discuss this game anywhere but Steam.

Asking the same questions over and over is tiresome for both parties. But it takes time for new players to actually understand what's going on. I'm talking daily with an enthusiastic new player and it's really sad to see his struggles, and having trouble going through the understanding and acceptance process that took me a while as well. (Today's lesson: the two clocks.)

You make some great points. Sadly, it seems that there is some kind of exceptionalism at play here and everyone loses out because of that. There is a TS community, and they have been working together fixing TS as an aside. It's like the players storming the pitch at a football match, and walking the ball into the net. DTG should probably pay heed to such a movement.

Haven't tried that on these forums but yes generally there's lots of willing help on UKTS if a problem appears and I have availed myself of it often, I don't really know why but I feel those forums are stagnating a bit? Maybe it is just me and lockdown fever?

According to my profile i joined this forum in 2016, but I am sure it is longer than that, As a complete newby to both the simulator and forums, I joined the UKTS forum, quite innocently my first post was " which is in your opinion is the best and worst routes for me to buy" i was banned for trying to stir up trouble. Lol.

Quite cretinous behaviour on the part of the peers in that example.

I think that we should embrace the fact that we have several diverse forums on which to discuss this simulator. I visit around 5 and find the diversity of opinions to be helpful and refreshing. Yes, UKTS can be a little challenging but that's part of the fun and I find it scintillating to be challenged in a forthright manner.

This is an excellent form and has a good balance of topics and well worth visiting.

There seems to be less people here who have technical knowledge of how the game works and what you have to do to change something. Normally on UKTS you will get a number of replies to any question

As mentioned in the TSW2 section quite a few years ago now I got in serious doodoo over at UKTS, being rather outspoken about the state of what is now the DTG "classic" sim. (I think it was RSC or RSDL at the time). I chose the pistol rather than the firing squad, so to speak. Although I have mellowed considerably now a couple of emails to the admins over there asking to overturn my self inflicted lifetime self ban have gone unanswered.

However if you want "salt" UKTS has nothing on the official Frontier Developments Elite Dangerous boards. Fear to tread over there unless you have a very thick skin!

Tbh other than the ridiculously drawn out pre-mod time (pre-mod is when you have to have every post approved by a moderator along with other restrictions like no access to PM's) my experience of the UKTS forum has been pleasant enough, I've already had help with a few TS issues and the general ambiance seems friendly enough.

(and before anyone wastes keyboard clicks on telling me the reasons behind pre-mod just bear in mind I've been moderating and Administratoring PHPBB3 forums for over a decade in fact I Moderate on a forum with over 81 thousand members with over 2.6 million posts so yeah I get Pre-mod)

I'm also a member of both forums (albeit not super active). For ages I couldn't get UKTS to load and I kind of forgot about it.

I'd go there if I really needed someone technical to point me in the right direction. One or two users there come off as somewhat brusque in writing, but I think for the most part it's just their quirks not translated properly into written forum posts.

The politics I tend to stay out of.

I don't visit there as much as I used to but there are some very helpful guys on there and I think there is a larger variety of interests in certain periods, certainly I think there are more steam and BR period enthusiasts there whereas on some other sites it seems more skewed towards more modern eras. There is a lot of good freeware hosted there and talked about. Sadly one of the most busy freeware route developers has just passed away.

It can get a bit techy sometimes, I think there are a few "call a spade an excavator" members, probably from Yorkshire, who tend to speak their mind, but it has always been like that and I don't think that is a bad thing as long as they aren't offensive.

As for over moderation, I don't think that is true, there only seems to be one regular one and you very rarely get any locked topics. I don't think so many people use the forums now.

A number of people seemed to stop using the forums because of the problems in loading when Matt was updating it.

This place is ok but it seems a bit like Facebook where you can say what you want to anyone
There is no Respect on this forum

    That's a bit harsh :D

I think this forum is truly a public space. You get all kinds of different people here. There is no established power dynamic as such, people say what they think, openly. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - critical discourse is very important. Because there are no established inter-personal relationships, people can say what they want in an objective way. They can ask questions that some ingrained simmers would find frustrating and still get kind and informative answers.

I have a question while I'm here; As a customer of Train Simulator, if something you've purchased is broken, would you rather wait indefinitely for a "proper solution" to fix the broken software, or would you be happy with an interim solution that fixes the broken software while a "proper solution" is being worked on?

I personally would ask on a Forum about the problem and get a fix in place so I can enjoy what I bought
If an official fix comes from DTG, (howls of laughter :D ) then fine

Recently purchased TS2021 to give me WCML South, Keil - Lubeck and the Fife Circle for £21.95
And I found a problem on WCML - South where the last signal before Euston would dump the brake even though it was clear
With the help of people on UKTS they have found the problem :)

Back to the Respect thing -
I would not expect anyone on UKTS to post Stupid Memes because they disagreed with me or anyone else

    You get it here though

Thing is Peter, memes are just another (and the most recent) way of portraying an emotion, smiley faces are the most basic way of showing your desired emotion (hence them being called emoticons or emotes on some platforms)
There is nothing more or less disrespectful about a meme than there is a "rolling eyes" emote yet you use said emote all the time.

Memes used correctly can inject not only your true feeling into a wall of text they can (again if done right) inject some humour into the post, you do appear to have a problem with humour it would seem so this memes for you...

DTG Jamie DTG Natster - is the use of memes acceptable?

THIS is what I call a lack of Respect

With all due respect... if he actually TYPED "Give us a hug" instead of posting a meme that said "Give us a hug", would you still object so much? It seems like such a small thing to complain about.

We might as well move this on to Facebook as it is perfectly normal to post anything there

Oh, so because YOU don't like something everybody else should change their outlook?

    Get over yourself!

I was not disrespectful to you in any way yet you chose to be abusive and throw (poorly self censored) swear words at me? Yeah you're a model poster you are. *Insert rolling eyes emoji as Peter finds these less offensive*

    Guys, guys, calmie downie :)
Please don't prove the point that moderation is necessary.
I'm seeing some random people upset terribly by anything, guess the world situation is making everyone's tolerance close to nil.

Wow, this really lit up like a box of tinder.

It's a public forum. So long as the rules aren't being broken, it's all fair game.

I understand that. It's obvious what is annoying you here, but my question is, why does someone posting a meme upset you so much?

Do you not think that's an entirely disproportionate response though?

There's no need to fall out with one another, first off let's try and steer this thread back on topic.

Secondly memes are not against the forum rules, and although some of you might not enjoy them they are fine to use.

However if a meme is posted at the expense of another user, in a nasty or aggressive manor then that's where I will step in and remove the post.

    I didn't know what a 'meme' was - duh!
But it was coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976:
Dawkins needed a noun to describe a particular concept of human culture. He initially toyed with the Greek word mimeme, meaning imitation, but he wanted something shorter that gestured to the English gene. He landed on meme.
So it is a genetic imitation in its purest form.
