Class 43 Locomotive Back Compartment

    There's a room at the back of the class 43s engines, anyone know what it's for?

    But the compartment is behind the engines, it's just an empty room.

    Assuming you mean the HST power car rather than Warship... It was the guard's compartment and, believe it or not, an auxiliary driving cab. Originally there was a small window on the end next to the gangway and basic controls for reversing but they were so little used both were removed.

    It was a guards compartment, but was apparently so noisy that the unions got involved and BR had to incorporate a guards compartment into the standard class trailer car nearest the power car. It was still used for bicycles and parcels.

    The original engines were incredibly noisy. I used to get woken by one every summer Saturday morning.

    Indeed- and the ride was quite terrible by all accounts.
