Train Simulator introducing Smells. I have now managed to introduce smells in TS when operating a steam loco. Whilst TS is running I fire up my Mamod Steam Engine that I’ve had for 30 years and place it on the floor in front of my chair. With a judicious tweaking I can very often synchronise the snorts and snuffles from the steam engine with what is happening in TS – well nearly as I am tone deaf. The smell is wonderful and you feel that you are there, it totally enhances the experience. Whatever you do - do not drink the meths (used for starting the steam engine) otherwise your screen may go very dim? All too soon the Mamod runs out of puff – no matter I just pause TS and re-fire my old puffing Billy, and off we go again! Diesel Locos not altogether successful My diesel generator is a bit too big (the noise and vibration is perfect) to use in the house for TS diesel scenarios (and I don’t want to succumb to CO poisoning) – need to see if I can find a “model” one. Electric scenarios – difficult and fairly dangerous. I did think of acquiring a relatively unused piece of equipment from the US Penitentiary service (several on e-bay), but I could end up getting fried, but definitely more exciting than your average buttkicker attachment. Warning: Do not try any of this at home. Any other smell improvements - out there?
Passenger view + stale urine + don't wash for a week for B.O. + a dash of cider + stale perfume and add a bit of vomit for seasoning, you should be good to go for the real rail passenger experience.
I find that wetting my trousers gives the authentic smell of Birmingham Moor Street, so a must when driving the Chiltern Line. My wife complains about the number of workstation chairs I'm having to replace. But you've got to be committed to your hobby.
Wearing oily overalls and a drivers hat increases my immersion when driving steam. I prefer more casual attire driving diesel and electric although I've never been comfortable wearing that cheap BR nylon tie.
Apart from the US Penitentiary equipment how about a mini tesla coil to generate that ozone smell and a bit of crackling noise? Situate it behind you because that's where any flash from a pantograph would be
I prefer the BR Blue period, so stale tobacco a hint of Brut 33 works for me. For authenticity, a curly cheese sandwich on the desk is the finishing touch.
