Hello! So after looking thru the DTG website I'm pretty confused as to where TSW2 fits into the 'family' of TSW releases over the years, aside from being one of two apparently playable via console. From what I see on the pages for TS 2021 and all previous versions are out only on steam as are their DLC packs, and there is no way to access or play these games via console. Is that understanding correct? Does anyone know if DTG has plans to make a version of TS2021 available on console vs PC? Thanks!
TS2021 has been around for a looooong long time, and has survived different names. TS2021 will never be on console just because of the way it was built, and it still survives on that framework, which is why they have made TSW, in an effort to move a train simulator into the next generation. TSW 2 is the second iteration of TSW, the reason for the change from TSW 1/2020 was in order to perform an engine update. Right now TSW as a simulator is in its infancy, and will take a while to get upto the same content level as TS2021, however it’s unclear at this stage where TSW will fit in in the long run, due to DTG’s commitment to consoles and keeping every platform the game is on in line with each other, it may not really get to the point where we can have full length routes and many other features that have been lost when comparing TSW and TS, not to say that TSW hasn’t got its advantages over TS. Looking at it from a PC perspective, you need to decide if the graphics and features of TSW are enough to pull you away from TS, where as on console it’s your only option for a train simulation. There’s plenty of controversy surrounding TSW & TS when comparing the two, and ultimately only time will tell if TSW can compete with the content and gameplay that TS has to offer. TLDR; TSW looks prettier but has less content, TS will not come to consoles.
TS classic would never come to console. that's why when TSW came and if you read the early blogs it's meant to be the next evolution. TS started a long time again. And has a vast catalogue of content and routes to chose from.
Thanks for both of your replies, it does fill in the family tree so to speak. I'm still pretty new to TSW2 but do enjoy the ability to play via console versus PC. However the lack of expansion DLC for console vs PC is pretty astounding. Hopefully there will be many more expansion packs to come for console.
The DLC you see on PC will mostly be for Train Simulator, which has been out since 2009, so as you could imagine has built up an extensive library of content. TSW is a completely separate game, and the content is the same for both PC & Console.
Rail Simulator was released in October 2007, which means that Train Simulator has been supported constantly for 14 years, which is an incredible run for a game. I hate it when people complain about Train Simulator's DLC cost because I don't think they understand how much content there is and how you don't have to own all of it (unlike other games, where might aim to own all of the DLC). That said, I would like to buy all of it...
Ah, yeah, I lose track with all the names it's had, but I agree with the price, I don't get what people would even do if they had every single DLC for TSXX, and while it would be pricey to build a network out of DLC's, it is well worth the price, and it is certainly a lot cheaper than making a model version. I can see how people own all the content for TSW, because people will be building up their library, however the beauty of TSXX is that you can just go into steam and build a collection, hopefully TSW ends up there.
