Hi. Please be kind and help a noob on his first journey. I purchased train sim just yesterday so there's a lot I have to learn. Today I decided to try career scenarios on the Clinchfield route using the EMD SD-40. This particular scenario starts on an incline with me rolling backwards down the hill. I apply the brakes and wait for another train to pass. But when it's time to go, brake pipe pressure is gone and brake cylinder pressure is at 66 psi and not reacting to my input. I tried finding information on google and from what I could gather was that there is something to do with reverser and loco brake(maybe?) and emergency brakes mixed in as well. I'm yanking all the levers up and down but to no awail. A rather embarassing start to my train driver career Any help will be appreciated!
You’ve got two types of brakes: 1. Train brake 2. Independent brake (As well Parking and dynamic) Do you know where the above 2 are and have you released both of them?
Ok. Got it moving. Engaging and disengaging loco brake may have done it but I'm not sure. Still would be nice to know the full procedure. is independent brake the loco brake?
Yes it is. Independent brake is the same as loco brake. There are also other names for train brake such as automatic air brake, etc... What’s the brake pipe charged to? Is it 90psi or 110psi? If you’re operating a freight train and it’s charged at 90psi, from the picture in your post, train brake is released because brake pipe pressure is at 90psi (white need on left gauge). That means it must be your independent brake which is still applied. Let’s say for example brake pipe pressure is at 80psi, that means your train brake isn’t released because you’ve got 10psi reduction from the brake pipe. In very simple terms, when you make a reduction in the brake pipe, the brakes on the entire train will apply. The bigger the reduction, the more brake you’re applying. (For the pendants out there, yes I know it’s a very simple explanation and isn’t 100% technically correct)
It was a freight train and the brake pipe was 90 psi. Thanks for your swift replies. My first voyage through the Appalachian Mountains has been a success. I am digging this so far, can easily see myself spending quite a bit of money on this game
