Loved it! But only locos in good condition can complete it - the test is if it can accelerate up a 1:121. If it can it's achievable, if not, it isn't. Conveniently you can test this within the first few minutes on the gradient out of the works siding up to Appleby. Engine characteristics are determined at scenario load time - starts/restarts/save game loads.

It's been a long time since I've done it, but here's some rough notes I meant to post at the time, for anyone else struggling -

It's all about controlling the amps to maximise power whilst preventing wheelspin either from to much throttle or from field diverts. Maximums -
    0 to 0.4mph max 689A
0.5 to 7.1mph the locos max 2699A can be used
    7.2+mph a max of 1229A

    From start -
    Sand on.
    23% throttle.
    Release brakes.
    At 0.5mph 100% throttle (max 2699) amps
Before 7.2mph decrease throttle to 40% (1199/1206A) otherwise wheels will slip.
When the amps start dropping at 15.7mph progressively increase the throttle to keep them as close to 1230
In preparation for field divert at 22.9mph +570A; throttle to 60% with less than 1230A (sand)
    Field divert +297A at 37.7mph

At 20.6mph amps hit the minimum of 650.
    Thereafter-
Amps as close as you dare to 1230 (sand). With no gradient you reach 100% throttle at ~30mph
Sander must be on at or above 940A and can be off below this.
