I've been toying with the idea of getting this. But is it worth it for that price? Is it really a cut above the default one? https://www.justtrains.net/product/class-20-advanced-collection DTG one: https://store.steampowered.com/app/222628/Train_Simulator_BR_Class_20_Loco_AddOn/ Who has them both and can comment?
You could get the AP sound pack for the DTG one... it makes a difference, as the original sound was pretty rubbish.
I have both and out of the box the JT version is better. Both use the AP soundpack and there are lots of reskins at VP and DPSimulations for either. You just gotta have a Choppa.
I currently have the DTG one with AP sound. I like it also as a handy test loco on a new route: good visibility and versatile, can easily and quickly tootle about! I used to think they were about the most hideous creation ever unleashed on the railways, but they’ve grown on me!
Yes, they look like an 08 shunter on steroids. They were often doubled up nose-to-nose and lasted longer than most of the 1st gen diesels.
I have had the DTG version for a while, and later bought the JT version. Not for the 20 itself (I personally think the DTG one is slightly better), but because it includes the FNA nuclear flask wagon (and I believe another wagon) - I simply wanted that wagon for a scenario plus it comes with a boat load of liveries.
I think the JT one is better, but neither are stellar by today's AP standards or anything... they're both quite old. The JT one comes with more liveries and bits and bobs though.
If it’ll sort out my garden, that £20 is theirs... Now there’s an idea, though: setting up a garden railway with a weed killing train!
The DTG version is the old IHH version they updated. I got the JT version as that come out before the DTG version was released Apart from different liveries it also has locos with different end designs Disks, Headcode Boxes and new style marker lights
Ah, that's it. The RHTT train. Honestly, if the DTG one came with more liveries, I'd use it more, as the JT one is startign to show its age (such as if there's a particle effect, such as clag from another train, in front of you the effect will be between you and the windscreen)
Class 20 reskins here. https://www.vulcanproductions.co.uk/diesel.html https://www.vulcanproductions.co.uk/rfletcher-diesel.html And more at DPSimulations.
This is the only livery anyone would ever want, surely? https://store.steampowered.com/app/295173/BR_Blue_Class_20_AddOn_Livery/
In September 1999 a special ran from the UK to Kosovo - the Train for Life https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosovo_Train_for_Life Which had three class 20s to help out - not my pictures
Not sure if this was ever on sale: certainly isn’t now at £21.99 - https://www.justtrains.net/product/class-20-advanced-collection But still might make it my final treat for the holiday season. Here’s the nuclear flask run from the inimitable Alan Thomson, Esq.
I wonder if JT will ever produce a more lived in cab? It has some great weathered skins, but the cab looks brand new inside! The braking is quite a struggle: presumably matching the prototype? Quite a change after the 323!
They always will be a difference between a train formed of loco and stock and a train of MU Cars With loco and stock it relies on the Train Brake Pipe - you reduce the pressure from the front which causes the individual coaches/wagons to apply their brakes and the train slows down. With Single Pipe Freight wagons they are slower to release as you have to prove full pressure at the rear from the valve in the cab Passenger coaches have a twin pipe system so the main air helps the system release quicker. Totally different with an Emu - old or new - they have an electronic brake system that applies the same brake force on all vehicles at the same time with the older sets it was the EP brake as found on the early AC and DC sets. Newer sets have a slightly different system that does the same job - a 12 coach Dmu/Emu would apply and release at the same time on every vehicle.
Thanks Peter, for the elucidation. It was a sharp contrast with the MUs, but perhaps I should have said even with other diesel locomotives for a better comparison.
It would be worth doing a run with one type of loco then doing a second with the Class20(x2) That would highlight any differences in braking between the two
