As much as I enjoy driving trains in TSW2, it can get quite boring after doing the same things over and over again so to make the game more challenging and exciting I think more should be added to the game other than just driving and one important role on the railway is a guard. It would make a great edition to TSW2 as some of the routes we have feature guards so it isn't really realistic when driving a route that is supposed to have a guard but everything is done on DOO. It would make more sense to have the mode brought to life and bring more challenges to the game so that there is something new to do.

What would they do? How do you envisage it working?
For instance the guards in Kent mainly open and close doors and get abuse for enforcing tickets
Other than that there's little for them to do.

A great many services in the South East of England are driver only as well, so "guards" don't even open the doors...

They wouldn't have to add every little detail in. I was mainly leaning towards operating the doors from the cab and coaches if DTG went that far into adding it. They don't need to add ticket inspections because its mostly revenue staff who do that

Hmm, doesn't sound interesting to me.
Sitting for up to half an hour then pushing a button, waiting for a minute then pushing the button again...
    Maybe there's something I'm missing

I can see this but on a select few vehicles like the class 101 and the BGs on the end of trains in NTP but I think it would be great for the class 101 or just on WSR

I actually think being a Dispatcher would be a better idea. You have to make sure trains can get out on time, you have to use the whole station, and you also get a free trainspotting shift whilst your at it. Also, at stations like Brighton on EC, you could dispatch trains onto the west Coastway and the Brighton Main line to London and Gatwick. Still a good idea

Its almost asif you wouldn’t have to play it.

I think passenger mode is boring but I don’t play that.

I don’t see how being a guard in TSW could ever be “more challenging and exciting” than being a driver. You can pretty much role play being a guard now in passenger mode. Just walk up and down the train hurling abuse at yourself and pretend you are closing the doors instead of the AI when you get to stations. A big part of being a guard in real life is dreaming that one day you will become the driver. You don’t need to dream in TSW.

I would like to see an automatic guard mode where on appropriate routes, the doors automatically open/close and the bell/buzzer is automatically given. E.g. HSTs on GWE. This could be interesting on traction where driver closes doors but the guard ‘tells’ the driver when to by giving 1-2 on the buzzer. Followed by 2 on the buzzer for right away. E.g. Class 166 on selected routes, Class 22x

I would also like to see automatic CD/RA indicators at appropriate stations such as London Paddington for DOO services. This would be operated by the dispatcher in real life to let the driver know when to Close Doors and then give the Right Away.

Anything that effects the core driving experience is welcomed. With regards to a guard mode where you get to be the guard, I don’t think I’d use it personally but I can see the appeal:

The routes that are available so far, yes guard mode wouldn’t be very interesting because stations are quite far apart. But if South Western Railway or Northern ever make it to TSW, some of the routes are very intensive with services stopping every few minutes and the guard opening/closing the doors. Look at the service attached London Waterloo to Weybridge which has 21 intermediate stops with a journey time of 75minutes. So on average it’s about every 3-4 minutes that the train is stopping and the guard opens and closes doors at each station.

This could be the earliest form of Multiplayer as well where one of you is a driver and the other is a guard. Ultimately, I would like to see big online servers of for example, 32 players in a lobby. But initially, it would be nice to see a small multiplayer mode of perhaps 2-4 players which could include a guard mode and/or the other players operating different services.

I like your idea for a basic multiplayer and guard mode but for multiplayer I think they should introduce a sandbox mode first

I like the idea of a guard/couductor in the game. Routes like lirr have a conductor that opens and closes the doors in reality. The driver would not open and close the doors on the lirr. I feel like this would add realism to some routes. World Of Subways 4 has the option to have the AI Conductor which opens/closes the doors on or off and I think dtg should implement it as a option to those who want to have an ai conductor/guard on or off for those who may or may not want an ai conductor

If this was introduced, it could be optional or you could have an ai conductor opening and closing the doors. You wouldn't have to use it if you didn't like it

Well yeah, but then if they're going to spend thousands of pounds developing a system that nobody uses, how efficient is that?

You don't know if it'll cost that much money and some people may use it. Saying nobody would not use an ai conductor or be a conductor or guard themselves makes no sense

To invent a completely new game mode even in an existing environment, from concept to development, testing, output etc is hundreds of man hours, so thousands of pound seems to be about right
And maybe "nobody" was an exaggeration, but I've seen a number of posts on here where guard mode has been discussed as either a standalone or multiplayer concept with people going "Nope, wouldn't touch it"
Some would, but how many times would you want to sit there doing not much until it's time to press some buttons?

Well some would. Heck I would give it a go a couple of times. An AI conductor would be cool as well. Or if you don't like either, you could turn it off. It's that simple

Indeed, and the simple answer is I wouldn't touch it. Ever
Same goes for passenger mode or anything that relied on a human to do dispatching. But that's me

Not really sure how this would work as TSW 2 currently stands. With a multiplayer expansion to allow driving trains along routes with friends and other players this would work. But as I see TSW 2 currently I just don't think adding this guard mode would be necessary.

It's a good feature addition suggestion for TSW 2.

Maybe not but the inclusion of an AI conductor at the very least for routes like lirr would make sense

We need both guards and dispatchers! It would make the game more realistic

DTG Protagonist has already said he wants that, but I think it could be a long time before it is included and before toilets are accessible ;)

Toilets really?, Well they would have to be clean for sure. That's interesting though, seeing an open cafe car would be nice. Similar to the cafe car we saw on NEC for the original TSW.

Anyways that is off-topic, just my thoughts

I think a guard mode would be a great addition to TSW.

Obviously, you can already ride services as a passenger, but I think this would make the game more interesting than going as a passenger and give you an alternative to driving.

As well as opening/closing the doors, I think a guard in-game could check tickets in a similar way to how the driver checks tickets in Fernbus (shown in this video by Squirrel), however in this case the conductor would check the tickets are correct for the route and also sell to those without a valid tickets.

This option would add another level to TSW2; allowing the player to do something other than drive or sit as a passenger and giving a greater feeling of purpose to riding on the services.

I think a guard mode is a fantastic idea. Even if you can’t play the guard yourself, at least have Guard open and close operations on the routes and trains that have guards do the doors.

I think this is a good idea, especially if multiplayer comes to the game. Whether multiplayer will actually be coming or not is a total other question.

Well if we get a guard role in the game, I hope...no, I insist that we get a buffet trolley mode in the game too. Opening and closing doors and pressing a "tickets please" button every few seconds is all well and good, but I think we can all agree that the true excitement and depth of gameplay would come from punting a stainless steal trolley with a boiling vessel, a selection of cold snacks and a tub full those little plastic stirring sticks up and down the aisle.

For an extra challenge, it could have a wonky wheel and only precise, yet delicate control of your trolley would prevent you from losing control of your rig and smashing it into some gangly legged NPC's ankle. Pressing a button on your controller would cause your character to call out "Tea. Coffee. Hot drinks, cold snacks" every few seconds, with a vast selection of responses, such as "Sorry love, no prawn cocktail. I've got salt and vinegar, cheese and onion, plain, Scampi Fries or Quavers.", or "Black coffee and a Kit-Kat, that'll be £1.32. Bit short of change in the till, squire...have you got the thirty two?"

For added interaction, there could be a power gauge that fills when some cheeky, penny pinching miserable old bat asks for a couple of extra sugars and milk cartons that both you and her know full well are going straight in her handbag so that she doesn't have to pay for some when she meets Maureen for a cup of tea in Brighton later on. You'd have to hit the power bar at just the right moment to launch them at her with a level of disdain that tells the miserly old bag that you know damned well what she's up to, but not so hard that they smack her square in the chops and she makes a complaint to the guard. I mean, they're called single serving portions for reason, for crying out loud!

You could be tasked with stocking up your buffet trolley before your journey, or en route at some of the larger stations, choosing carefully as to whether to stick with your previous items, or get a bit decadent and throw a couple of bags of McCoy's crisps and a box of mint Club bars on there too to impress the good looking business woman sat in first class. Be careful though! Because changing your stock from the pre determined selection takes additional time and there's nothing more pathetic than seeing the light refreshment's specialist legging it down the platform with their trolley rattling like a bag of marbles, hopelessly chasing after the guard van as the train pulls out of the station.

What's more, DTG could really cash in on this by releasing additional DLC buffet packs, with one idea being a BR 1970's Sandwich Legends pack, where your sarnies are era correct selections, such as cheese, egg, egg and cress, or egg salad instead of that new fangled, fancy BLT and Chicken Tikka nonsense, are cut to be rectangular rather than triangular, are turned up on the corners and come in cling film instead of a neat little plastic carton.

I think adding such a feature could be something that literally some people might want to see in the game.

They won't add toilets so I doubt this would he added, however, I would love to see it. Take a BR sandwich on a modern train and give it to someone you don't like :)
