Hi everyone, I was driving the 395 along hs1 when I found this station , does anyone know what the name of it is ? Thanks
Its because its serves a part of London called Rainham which is on the north part of the Thames. This can happen with other stations in Britain for example there is Ashford International in Kent and Ashford in Surrey, so Network Rail add the county onto the end of the stations name so it doesn't confuse passengers if there are stations with the same or similar names. But to be honest, it would take some really dumb passengers to realise they booked a ticket to the wrong Ashford or Rainham! Edit: Some more examples: .Waterloo (Merseyside) and London Waterloo .Gillingham (Kent) and Gillingham (Dorset)
Another example would be Adlington Lancashire, and Adlington Chesire. Also not railway specific, but look for Preston in England. or Blackburn, plenty of both.
Although it doesn't have another station with the same name, Appledore is listed with (Kent) at the end, even though Appledore (Devon) closed years ago. And in the USA, there are plenty of Springfields (real ones I mean)!
I was surprised to see the post stating Ashford, Surrey. I used to travel through it many years ago and it was known as Ashford, Middlesex (whether officially or not, I’m not sure). Although the county of Middlesex is no longer officially recognised, Ashford is north of the Thames and so, geographically, in Middlesex. However, I now read that it falls within the boundaries of Surrey County Council for administrative purposes. You learn something new every day.
