So one era I would like to be represented sometime in the future would be the vintage North American Passenger trains, before Amtrak, as I feel like this would be an interesting era to explore, not only that but there would be a good amount of diversity to choose from, with Steam, Diesel, and Electric power all being possible candidates. (Note, due to the BNSF licensing issue, I wont be listing any trains from the CB&Q,GN,NP,ATSF etc.) Atlantic Coast Line Baltimore & Ohio City of San Francisco (SP,UP,CNW/SP,UP,MILW) Chicago Northwestern Golden State (Southern Pacific & Rock Island) Missouri Pacific Milwaukee Road New York Central New Haven Norfolk & Western Pennsylvania Railroad Southern Pacific Union Pacific
The great thing about the older eras are that there were a lot of mixed traffic routes back in the day. Now most of the lines are freight, with maybe a token Amtrak train at best, and of the few passenger lines many of them don't have much freight traffic. Where as a route like Horseshoe Curve during WW2 had 40 to 50 passenger runs a day, and lots of freight traffic to boot. I doubt they'd set it during WW2, probably the 50's I'd imagine, but even at that time there was still a decent amount of passenger traffic making the rounds at that time. If you want to make routes that appealed to both freight and passenger crowds in the US you couldn't do much better.
When steam comes, there should defenitely be some routes with the american passenger steam giants. The early streamlined diesels are lookers too. It's not my usual kind of route, but I would be interested in them.
