I've been experimenting with the visuals of the rain in TSW 2 and trying to make it look and feel more natural.

I've made the overall size of the rain smaller and more transparent, but I've also grouped the rain drops closer together so there's less of a gap between them.

Ultimately, this reduces the 'solid white line' look and makes it look more natural.

Below are some screenshots of the modified rain look. Routes shown are SEHS, GWE and ECW, between late morning and early afternoon, on 'Summer Rain' setting to the max.

Let me know what you think of it!

Appreciate what you’re doing my man! Keep it up, one day they at least will have you on the team at DTG. I’ve sadly given up with TSW

That looks fantastic! I am happy to lose the "white line effect." Thank you.

Wow, that looks great! Did you try how it looks at night in the headlights flares? Are you planning to share your work?

How will it look on glass when viewing from the inside?

Hi, the headlight flare still produced the odd few ‘white lines’ when in direct light however I’m trying to see if I can eliminate this. Once I’m happy with it, I’ll release it.

Hello. I altered the rain drop size on the glass so it’s smaller than the default however this causes graphical issues/shimmering artefacts so I’m going to leave that at the default size.

Rain is something that needs some work. Indeed the main problem to me are the extreme light reflexion it has with headlights making it imposible to drive in night with heavy rain with some trains like the modern german engines and EMUs (you basically just see a white curtain at the windshiled and pitch black behind it). Rain should be more transparent, even if it reacts to light as it does in real life. The solid line effect you talk about is also something I don´t like. The pictures look far more natural with your changes! Nice work.

    Cheers

The way I view rain is generally a grouping of short transparent lines slightly more opaque than fog. The heavier the rain the longer the drop(line in tsw) and the more opaque.

The rain itself looks considerably better, but I still think the whole world looks too grayish. Just because there's rain doesn't mean the world looses all of its color.

That looks amazing. A shame this game has been out for 4 years and they haven't gotten to improve rain, nighttime lighting and textures in certain areas. You would think an engine upgrade would fix those problems

I agree. This is something only DTG can sort out, which I don’t expect to fixed anytime soon unfortunately.

If I remember correctly, Train Simulator had the same problems. Rainy weather resulted in a gray landscape void of color...

I’m going to try and make it more transparent so you don’t see any white lines at night, as the headlight shines on it.

    That looks better.

I had created a thread here about how crap the DTG rain was in TSW so I don't know if that tempted you to having a go at modding it or not?

    Either way, good job.

Improved rain visuals mod now out!

I can't get round light sources making it shine at night, as this is something DTG need to fix with their light source intensity.

    It's due to the fog.

It's not always foggy when it's raining. In my experience, even when it's raining in real life, there's still plenty of color to see. Especially at nearer distances.

When there's light rain, visibility is usually pretty good. There shouldn't be fog during light rain.

Some of the weather patterns for TSW seemed flawed. For whatever reason, even the slightest bit of rain means that you HAVE to have fog accompanied with it.

In my experience, I’ve rarely seen fog associated with rain. I believe the reason they use fog in TSW is so it acts as some sort of mask, to cover up the fact that it doesn’t actually rain away from the immediate view of the player. So it’d look very clear that it isn’t actually raining. I think this can also be called ‘fake rain’.

Like many visual core improvements which need sorting out, I assume this won’t happen until the next version of TSW comes out/annual updates.

It seems visuals are right down the list of priorities for DTG to improve.

I've set rain to near minimum, and had practically no fog.

Take a look here: Dynamic Weather Tool | Dovetail Games Forums

That could be the perfect complement to test this great rain modification. I included a dynamic storm feature, so rain amount will be changing over time. You can also manually tune all other weather settings for any service or scenario.

    Cheers

Makes scenes look worse imo, especially on clear days where things in the distance look super sharp and clear, which isn’t a good thing for low LOD assets.

Plus, it’ll mean you’ll be able to clearly see out of the rain radius around the player.

I tested the "better rain" with "better rain noise (louder version)" together and had an immersive and authentic drive yesterday, fits perfectly together and "feels" right. Thank you!

I was walking the dogs this morning and it was foggy, and it reminded me of this topic. Even in foggy weather, the world isn't gray. Sure, in the distance it's gray, but very close to me the world is extremely colorful. And I can clearly distinguish colors at least halfway the view distance. And it also isn't as dark as TSW makes a foggy world appear to be. There's plenty of light during this early foggy morning (approx 08:00).

TSW is too gray and too dark during foggy (and rainy) weather.

When it comes to weather effects, I think TSW could learn a thing or two about Euro Truck Simulator 2. I think the effects for rain looks pretty awesome and realistic. Aside from the skies looking actually pretty good, color doesn't just dissapear (especially nearby), and there's still no overuse of fog, with plenty of view distance left.

Just did a drive in the rain, might not be the best example, as that pavement creates quite a bit of greyness, and it's getting dark because it's late in the evening. Still looks better than any rain I've seen in TSW.
