My personal recommendation would be a Ryzen 5 3600 6c/12t ($200), Ryzen 7 3700X 8c/16t ($330), or Ryzen 5 5600X 6c/12t ($300) as the AM4 socket platform gives you a bit of leeway for upgrading to higher core count CPUs in the future. Something competitive from Intel might be the i5-10600k and i7-10700k, but I would give deference to the Ryzen chips for the more flexible platform and lower power consumption.

The CPU you are coming from is actually quite nice and I wonder how you may feel yourself being held back. If you are thinking about upgrading because it's been a while and you would like something new, I would advise against it if only to reduce e-waste. If you are finding that you have unsatisfactory performance, then it is important to think about the kind of performance you are looking to get (higher resolution? high refresh rate gaming? etc.). Do you know if you are CPU bound in the games that you play?

    Cheers

    I recommend AMD Zen 3.

If your main usage will be gaming, I strongly recommend the Ryzen 5 5600X. It is a superb CPU (just upgraded to one myself). If you require more heavy lifting CPU tasks beyond gaming everyday, such as rendering etc, look at the higher-end AMD Zen 3 CPUs.

According to well-regarded sources such as Gamers Nexus, AMD will release a "non-X" version of the 5600x (and possibly other Zen 3 CPUs) at some point, available at a lower price point.

This looks pretty good to me. Just a new CPU will not help a lot is my guess, you need to keep everything well balanced. You also may need a new motherboard and when get it a new graphics card .... If your PC is old, save a bit longer and buy a new system.

Seconding what everyone else has said I have 3.50 gigahertz Intel Core i7-2700K from 2010 and I dont have a problem running any games. Look for the bottleneck in your system IMHO its not your cpu.

Im using a 1080 strix 8GB and get 60FPS at 1920x1080 full setting and a few ini. + mods.
You should be outperforming me ?!?!?!?
There has to be something we are missing to help you here as my CPU is 3 years older than yours and less spec.
All I can think of is I have a massive fan and heatsink on my cpu boosting it to 4.2 gH, Im running 32gig O.C. dual-channel and 860 pro SSD.

Ok after a quick FPS check playing NTP (screen 200%) I am looking at averaging 45 fps not 60. Im hitting 50s (not talking about tunnels) but also dropping to 30s. These numbers may make my initial claims look exaggerated, but I just remembered since I did my FPS check I had tweeked the Ini. more towards quality than performance. Sorry if my first numbers were misleading, but have a go with the ini. values for performance and have a go at OC your graphics card I use MSI afterburner.
