I'd love to vote, but I can't get past the wording of the question. "Are you for or against?" Yes or no?? I am for cold start mode. I'm not sure which of the choices would express that..

It depends on the situation. I don’t want to cold start a train sitting at a platform because it should already be running. I would like to cold start a train sitting in a yard to be put into service. I would also like extra time to allocated to cold start if it was implemented.

yes ok in the Timetable services like leaving a warehouse, a cold start would be a good idea but it would take time between 15 and 20min its would be just great;)

Right now if I do a timetable run, I spawn in on foot a few minutes prior to the start of service so I can shut down and restart the engine. If I have extra time, I might even do a walk around.

especially that on TSW 2 this functionality would be good because we can move around so on TSW 2 it would be just incredible:cool:

The problem with a ‘cold start’ is to do it properly, you need so much more functionality most notably the TMS on modern units. For example, seeing the TMS initialise, main reservoir slowly building up, warning indications extinguish as air builds up, additional warnings and alarms self testing such as fire alarm, speedometer self testing, being able to test GSMR, being able to see status of train systems on TMS of Auxiliaries, Traction, VCB/HSCB, etc...
Otherwise, all a cold start will be in the game is press the battery on button, raise pantograph/start engines and that’s it which won’t even take 30 seconds.

I would much rather they work on improving TMS functionality, make the GSMR and DOO monitors (cameras) functional. All 3 of these would be good as they would affect the core driving experience massively. While I don’t mind seeing ‘cold starts,’ it’s not something most people are going to use and in any case, more functionality is needed to do it properly.

And if you really want “full immersion” (whatever that means), the method now for modern passenger trains is that drivers don’t usually start trains from cold. Hitachi/Alstom/Bombardier/Siemens usually have their own staff at depot that do it. All drivers do is leave their set at the depot and collect it in the morning.

I like the cold start, but I not always know what to do, so the help function on/off mode would be helpful for me. :)

I'm very much in favor of cold and dark, as long as it reflects the real world experience of an engineer. If a hostler or other yard staff stop and start the locomotives, then it wouldn't be realistic for that particular situation. Also, I think it would certainly be a choice for the individual player. Some want a turnkey start and go, and they should have that alternative.

Moreover, on many locos doing a proper cold start means accessing the engine compartment, which hasn't been done on most existing locos and where it is done causes its own problems (mostly, the model including appearing as an AI becomes a memory hog)

Having that alternative as a game setting would be a nice idea.

It's always puzzled me a bit that almost every tutorial goes through the cold start procedure (in abbreviated form)- and then you never actually use it, you always spawn into a running train.

I meant more the game’s version of a cold start which is enough for me. They’re never going to implement starting and running a train with 100% accuracy to real life.

On a side note-- the manual procedure for refueling the Class 40 and Class 08 mandate an engine shutdown first. Is this really how it's done in Britain? Over here, neither trains nor diesel trucks kill the engine just to refuel.

I think a mix of both situations depending on service. Like someone else mentioned if it's sitting at a platform it should be fired up. If it's in a yard with nothing attached and you have to link up with some freight then you should start it. Maybe have an option to toggle for newbies who don't want to have to start it so it will always be on for them.
