    Norfolk And Western #611 was built in May of 1950 making it 71 years old this year just a fun fact

    The J's were probably the last great American steam class- and that because N&W were holdouts, the last Class 1 RR to dieselize. But that also means that they were probably the most technically advanced steam locos ever constructed. Here's another fun fact: N&W didn't buy their first diesel until 1955, two years after future merger partner Southern had retired their last steam engines!

    (Amusingly, N&W 611 is actually younger than Clinchfield 800, an F3/7)

    Also for any of you 611 fans she’s going to be operating on the Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania again from May 22 Through October. Dates, events and activities are supposed to be posted on Strasburg website tomorrow. I got an email giving me advanced notice, I’ve seen her several times and had the chance to operate the 611. It’s a very impressive machine to see, feel and hear in person couldn’t recommend it any higher!!
