    Hello,
I noticed the GE P42 DC (Miami West line) locomotive has an black sort of like rectangle shape on the front of the train that I'll show with the below image.
Curious if anyone knew what it was or if there was an functional purpose to it.

    Cheers

    dkreveller...

Are you on about the black rectangle with "181" in it??? If you are, it's the locomotive number & is generally illuminated at night. It's purpose is so the locomotive can be identified by staff (and trainspotters...!!! ;))

Or are you on about the black rectangle on the roof??? That's a radio aerial/pod/fin... Its used to send radio communications from the locomotive to wherever the message is being sent...

Thanks Eric, yeah the black rectangle on the roof was what i meant. Makes more sense to have an Radio for communications there for sure.
