Seriously there is no way a train that tipped over would explode

Because, outside of a simulation, realism doesn't sell well. If a train derails, it can of course happen that a fire starts due to flying sparks and a broken fuel line, but even then the train would most likely only burn out slowly. Second, most likely the security systems would have prevented the whole movie.

Except, in reality, it did happen. It was based on CSX 8888's runaway......

Oh I didn't know. I never expected the film to be based on real events

They should have just done the real version, the sd40-2 8888 was a infamous engine by then.

CSX probably wouldn't allow it, they even refused to sell 8888 to those who were interested in purchasing the infamous engine.

Its like cars blowing up in flames, when they crash or go over a cliff! Its Hollywood Physics to wow the audience. Its to get the general public excited But all of us know its not possible. Like the stunts in the Dukes of Hazzard. very enjoyable to us boys from the 80s but not realistic today :'(

Yes fuel escaping over hot parts of the engine in a collision can ignite, even diesel .

Diesel can certainly burn under the right circumstances- but explode? Pure Hollywood.

Look at the Southall crash in the UK. The fuel tanks on he HST caused most of the Fatalities. Deffo cant explode. Not Like petrol or more refined petroleum. I know from experience of being a dumb ass

What about the way they try to shoot out some system! Its been so long since I saw it! which is hard to believe Due to lockdown!!! I think ive seen every film that was ever made!!!! :'(

Why not use a RPG to the lead loco and bring it off in the middle of know here? That wouldn't make for a good movie If you can call it that.

I think Rail related films are a lot like aviation films! Where the craft goes from say a 737 to dc10 to airbus or a 747 and back again

IIRC (haven't seen this since it was in cinemas) they're aiming for the fuel cut off. I thought at the time that blowing a few holes in the fuel tanks would have been more productive but obviously these are Hollywood fuel tanks so they would have exploded if hit by gunfire. Or a peashooter. Or been looked at slightly askance.

Or the Big Bayou Canot Amtrak crash in '93, where again burning fuel caused a great many of the casualties. Oh, it will definitely burn. But go off like a bomb? Nope.

Hollywood, man. I think it's still a pretty damn good film, all things considered. The one thing that probably annoyed me the most (that I can remember) was the guy talking about how difficult this task would be and that they'd have to do it all "in reverse". I definitely had an eye-rolling moment during that part.
