Built between 1860 and 1871, initially as a single-track route into Austria from Germany, the line was increased to two tracks and formed the main line trunk between Austria and Germany, connecting the German city of Munich to the Austrian cities of Vienna and Salzburg. It includes classes 403, 406 and 407, which are known as ICE 3, ICE 3M and New ICE 3 respectively. There are no ICE services on this line, there are only IC, EC and RJ services. Railjet (RJ) services are operated by the national Austrian rail company ÖBB whilst Eurocity (EC) services are operated by ÖBB and DB together. Regional Services are operated by Transdev under the label of Meridian (since 2020 "Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB)"). Freight services are also operated by the ÖBB.
