The first is the mastery challenge asking you to do a timetable/scenario run at 80mph in an emu only capable of 75mph
The second is why is the 314 appearing on the GWE route running the 166 timetable?

Rubbish. I got up to 80 easily yesterday.

    It’ll do 80mph fine.

There's a difference between "VMAX" for safety reasons and what the train is capable of doing when pushed, look at the HST, ran comfortably at 125mph for hours and hours but could be pushed up to almost 150 (downhill with a tailwind). If you're going for gold and pushing to a speed goal, that's not the same as running speed

The 314 will do 80, although I personally have an issue with a mastery challenge involving you speeding. "Great, you've mastered breaking the speed limit, you're an amazing driver"

As far as I'm aware, the 314 appearing on GWE is a result of the FGW mod.

Same with the Class 91 - they were only cleared for up to 125mph, but hold the record for fastest electric locomotive in the UK at 161mph.

Yeah that may be right - I don't have that mod and see no 314 for GWE.

Yep, good locos the 91s, and it took an EMU on high capacity wires and a clear line (in Kent) to beat it

I almost got it to 100mph... so close 97 is my best so far.

I think that you might just contemplate this as part of a game not as part of a realistic simulator.

My advice is start up the train, take a deep breath, hammer the throttle, get up to 80, exit out of the game, let out your breath and pretend it never happened. :)

About the Class 314 on GWE:

It is useable, but timetable mode isn't off the Rails. So you are only able to get the train moving on Paddington Greenford/Greenford Paddington Services, or services where you start on a platform with overhead wires in London Paddington as far as Hayes and Harlington
You won't be able to depart Reading for example.
However this does not affect AI Services

But i think its a welcoming Substitution, even if it may doesn't fit, but as said the class 314 appears only with the FGW Mod.

Don’t you have to complete the scenario/service for it to count towards the mastery though.

    ^This.

You are unlocking a UFO crash site! Going at 80mph is not more difficult to believe than a crashed UFO.

I thought DTG said that the OHLE on GWE isn't functional and is purely visual? Have they updated the route to make them functional and used the 314 to test it? If so, maybe there's a GWR 387 DLC in the works? Of course, this is purely speculative.

Trains that are placed on other routes where they wouldn’t be able to run automatically have their power, the 314 showing on GWE is likely being caused by the FGW livery mod.

The OHLE in GWE is still in the process of being installed. Even where there are wires overhead, I believe in 2016-17 they only carried current from Paddington along the Heathrow Express route, which leaves the main line at Hayes & Harlington.

Oh. I don't know. I only did it because I needed to get to 70mph for the achievement. I thought I'd push it up to 80 anyway for the fun of it. I'm sure that the realism can go out of the window for one service for anyone who wants the mastery task though. Then you can move to the "forget it happened" stage. . Otherwise, just ignore it.

While I try to stick within the rules most of the time, occasionally I like to push the limits for fun to see what it can do, red lights permitting.

Yeah there’s 70mph for the trophy, then 80mph plus completion of the same service for mastery, I got both the trophy and the mastery challenge on a Neilston service and still got a gold medal, so it’s not exactly uninstalling the game because you go 80mph.

Class 314 might cause confusion and delays if substituted into the express service of class 166 and occupies the express line at 70mph.

You can most definitely make it up to 80MPH with the Class 314 1282590_20210611231428_1.png

314’s maximum operational speed is 75 mph, but can easily achieve 100 mph.

Also I forgot to mention the 314’s destination blinds are really inaccurate for the inner circle routes

    Max speed for a 314 is 70mph, not 75.

I always thought that the overhead lines on GWE were purely decorative and that the route was only diesel as far as the game is concerned. So either they were always 'active' or they're newly working, suggesting that DTG are planning to add electric services to the line... Perhaps the London to Brighton Class 387 will be available to use?

The time period for GWR in game was set when electrification was still undergoing, to run electric traction. It has nothing to do with future plans, but rather its set in a timeline when it was still under construction.

I think the point was we were told we wouldn't be getting the 800 or 37x on the route because the electrics weren't in place. Now we find we can drive a pantograph powered unit along the line (for however long)...

That wasn’t the reason. Irrelevant of whether the wires are powered or not, they didn’t include 800s and 387s simply because it didn’t fit the time frame of the route era.

I’ve just tried switching on and off the ‘off the rails’ mode and it works both ways, but only if attached to the catenary while ‘on the rails’

Which implies that the wires really are 'powered'- as far as they go. Historically from 1998 on there was functioning OHLE as far as Heathrow Junction for the Class 332s.

Not what I meant. I was saying that, in-game, the overhead wires were purely decorative and that the game didn't consider the track to be electrified. But now with the 314s working on it by accident, we can see that, at least partially, the parts of the track is electrified, but we don't know if it always was or was added recently.

At a guess, I would say that there never was, at a game level, any such distinction; a loco with a pantograph does a simple check "are there wires?", and if there are then it goes.

Something in the abck of my mind is telling me the wires east of Airport Junction were always energised, just never used.

I simply don't think "energized" is a separate variable in-game. If there are wires, they work, end of.

I was talking about in game. It may however have been Matt doing his big picture "We'd like to do this so hopefully it can lead to this" talks - plus it was several years ago.

Unless they've made a big change from TSC the wires are effectively ALWAYS decorative, and it's a setting in the track which makes it "live or not" and there were discussions on streams ages ago about whether in TSW there is a difference between electrified overhead and electrified third rail (in fact I guess we can now test that by trying to run a 395 out of paddington and seeing if it will take it's power becasue the section is electrified)

You could always touch the wires on screen and see if you get a shock. That should confirm whether they are live or not.

On the subject of overhead wires, I can’t hpget the pantograph on the 314 raised, I’m in neutral, master key in, brake at step one but it won’t raise
