I see this has now been released on Steam for £19.99, discounted from £24.99. In the meantime, the route is also for sale on the JT website for £12.99, discounted until Monday from £19.99. I’m not particularly bothered about the scenarios (I assume the Steam version uses stock assets whereas the JT one doesn’t) but does anyone know if any improvements have been made to the scenery/route at all? I guess it would be odd for them to do that without improving their own product also but I’d be annoyed to buy an outdated version. Cheers.
It may be cheaper in the UK through JT but for me, outside the UK the reverse is true On Steam yesterday I paid with the discount COP43,600 which equates to $15.32/GBP11.42 On JT the usual non UK price is $29.99 but it’s on sale for $19.99 which is GBP14.89 So Steam for me is about 30% cheaper. I’ve noticed Steam pricing anomalies in the past although I presumed they’d only become another bone of contention if raised!. Here there’s a strange flip. Steam is cheaper for me (compared to the UK) but JT is more expensive. There’s even a third price. JT sell many of their packages, as downloads, on Amazon. On the US site is still shows at the non discounted price of $29.99. From a discussion I had earlier with JT on another subject they aren’t able to offer discounts or run promos because of Amazon rules. Why might anyone bother with Amazon then? Well there may be cases where credit card processors might decline overseas purchases of games software and Amazon therefore might be an alternative. And one day Amazon will likely sort out their mess of a games store and become a more viable distribution channel. In the end less that GBP12 doesn’t strike me as a bad price for a route, even an old one.
Nor me. The issue I have is this, from the TrainSim Facebook - OUT NOW! THE KYLE LINE Take in some heady highland air with the Kyle Line, running from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh! Even better, we've given this brand new product a launch discount of 20%! So DTG are claiming this is a “brand new” product, which would suggest that something has been done to it since the original release, or it’s a complete rewrite. Surely if not that’s false advertising. Looking at the screenshots on Steam I don’t believe anything has been done to it and I can’t find anyone who knows for sure. I’m tempted to buy it direct from JT, but would be annoyed if there is an updated version on Steam for £7 more. Do you see where I’m coming from?
I see what you are saying. Actually if it’s ‘brand new’ the suggestion is that it’s more than something with changes. If it’s ‘brand new to Steam’ or ‘brand new to DTG’ that’s one thing but generically ‘brand new’ is something else. I made a similar point to DTG about their description of the ‘totally reworked’ upcoming Portsmouth rerelease. They really need a lawyer (or a marketing person with some gumption about this) to read their releases. The description on Steam about content seems complete (and the 37s really are rather nice) although they don’t answer whether there are changes beyond that. Like you I doubt it and there’s JT branding all over the documentation. I can’t see why JT would release a newer better one on Steam in competition to their own site. For me if the pricing is about equal I will generally buy from the developer direct. If nothing else that gives more money to the developer (keeps it in the hobby) rather than going to pay Steam fees.
I actually emailed JT regarding this. The answer was simple "It's the same content"... Take that as you will
Wow. That settles that then. I think I’m going to pass on it anyway, even at £12.99. Having just watched it being driven again on YouTube it really shows its age and I don’t think it looks good at all.
The reason I asked was because I already HAD the JT purchase, and didn't want to spend out unless it had a better train, sounds, physic or whatever, but nope... I don't think the scenery is bad at all, but it's a challenge to drive given the consists you're given, and the gradients! Driving up the side of a mountain in a steam train ain't easy
Thanks for letting me/us know. I’m not sure it’s my thing, I think I’ll be better off getting their routes from Newcastle - Dundee.
