Are we allowed to set scenes in the editor (such as placing people in the shot that aren't on the route by default) if we use Steam assets, or do we have to leave the route completely vanilla?
Seen many shots with additional assets. I see why you're asking, though (the banning of workshop routes). Many winners come from custom scenarios with specifically placed trains, no harm in an extra dog, or twenty. Heck, temporary speed limit boards and trucks are scenario-specific scenery upgrades. Otherwise, that UK shot with the big crew maintaining a set of points under a set of signals just autowins (again).
The last train before a temporary WCML closure safely passes Route: WCML Trent Valley Train: Class 390
An Intercity 225 set receives routine maintenance at Bounds Green Route: East Coast Main Line London-Peterborough Locomotive: Class 91

BR Class 24 012 with a ballast train from Mickleton to Darlington for railway maintenance. Route: Weardale and Teesdale Rail Network Loco: BR Class 24
A Pennsy K4 is seen stopped near MG tower after the fireman noticed one of the engine's bearings was running hot. As the two look it over, the conductor shows up to see what the problem is. He would then ask the tower operator to flag down any trains that might show up behind them. Route Used: Horseshoe Curve Locomotive Used: PRR K4
As the sun begins to set, a southbound Surfliner creeps past a switch near the base of Mount Soledad. Off to the right, a track crew is beginning to set up shop as they prepare to work through the night, replacing rails and installing new concrete ties. Route Used: Pacific Surfliner Locomotive Used: EMD F59PHI
Creating a workshop scenario and felt that this screenshot just about qualifies for this contest. Very early morning at Southall Depot and traction inspectors give one final look over Black Five 45407 'The Lancashire Fusiler' as she prepares to haul a railtour from Ealing Broadway to York. Route: Great Western Mainline Loco: Stanier 5MT and Class 37
Lazily dug up an entry from an earlier contest. Night time engineering works on the Dawlish Sea Wall. Route: Riveria Line Loco: Class 66
Three permanent way gangers discuss how to get rid of the massive pile of ballast with only thirty minutes of the possession left, while a locomotive collects redudnant track sections to take to Kingmoor Yard. Route: West Coast Main Line North Loco: Class 66
And because the previous one can be argued as not exactly "maintenance"... Some S&T staff test points after a long night shift while a Class 66 rolls through. Multiple units wait eagerly in the background for the possession to end. Route: West Coast Main Line North Loco: Class 66, Class 156
