    Flåmsbana (The Flåm Railway)
From the arms of the fjords to the snowy mountains. The Flåm Railway takes you through the beautiful, stunning and dramatic nature of Western Norway. The Flåm Railway is one of Norway's most visited and distinctive tourist attractions because of it's steep gradient, starting at 2.0 meters above the main sea level and ending at 866 meters AMSL in only 20 kilometers. With the line's steepest gradient at 55 permille makes it Northern Europe's steepest adhesion railway.

    Technical information:

    - Route length: 20.4 kilometers.

    - Operated by Vy (former NSB).

    - Travel time: Between 45 minutes to 1 hour

    - The maximum speed on this line is 40 km/h going upwards, and 30 km/h going downwards.

    - The maximum radius of curvature is 130 meters.

    - Power output is 15 kV AC, 16 2/3 Hz

    - Track gauge of 1 435 mm, normal gauge.

    - Steepest gradient of 55 permille, or 1:18.

The Flåm Railway was built between 1923 and 1944 including preparation, track building and electrification. The line was opened in 1940 by the Germans, but not officially opened before 1980. The line was built to transport goods, post and passengers from the farms and houses in high mountains to the coast. Due to the large height difference, the line was built with sharp curves as well as horseshoe curves inside the tunnels so the trains were able to climb up the mountain faster. During the German invasion of Norway in 1940, the construction works stopped a short while before the Germans took over. The line was electrified in 1944.

According to the Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, 1.4 million people visited Flåm in 2017. 90% of all these people were foreign. 40% came from Asia which is the largest group of the visitors.

    The train:
The Flåm Railway is only operated by locomotive and wagons. Every train has up to 6 coaches and 2 locomotives. The EL18, a classic express locomotive, is the flagship of the long-distance trains between Oslo and Bergen/Stavanger/Trondheim. This is the Norwegian version of the Swiss Re 460 locomotive with an engine from Re 465. This locomotive have a mounted plow in order to deal with the massive amount of snow in the Norwegian high mountains. They are owned by the train rental company Norske Tog AS.

    Locomotive type EL18

Screenshot of the cabin of EL18. The same as Re 460, but on the right-hand side.
    e1.png

Passenger coach type B3 - The wagons used are type B3. They were built between 1962 and 1973 with a max speed of 120 km/h.

    The stations:

Flåm - Starting point. 2 meters above sea level. Located deep inside the Aurland Fjord, a fjord arm from the largest fjord in Norway called Sognefjorden, surrounded by tall mountains. The station is operated by a station master. The station was opened in 1940.
    YouTube@RailCowGirl.png

    Lunden
    - 16 meters above sea level. Single track stop where trains only stop at demand. Opened in 1942.

    Håreina
    - 48 meters above sea level. Another single track stop where trains only stop at demand. Opened in 1941.

    Berekvam
    - 343.8 meters above sea level. Operated by a station master and it's the only station on the line where trains can meet. Only one platform. Opened in 1940.

    Blomheller
    - 450 meters above sea level. The same type of single track stop. Opened in 1942.

    Kjosfossen
    - 670 meters above sea level. Single track stop. The famous Kjosfossen waterfall is right beside the platform. It's fall length is approx. 225 meters. The trains only stop here during the summer. On the other side of the stop, there is a power station powering The Flåm Railway. By the way, during the summer, Huldra will sing and dance here to attract men to follow her into the mountains which is not a good idea!

    Reinunga
    - 768 meters above sea level. Demand stop. Opened in 1942.

    Vatnahalsen
    - 811 meters above sea level. Demand stop. There is a hotel nearby who has the same name. Opened in 1941.

    Myrdal
    - End of The Flåm Line. Opened in 1908. Operated by a station master. Located 866.8 meters above sea level. Connection to the Oslo to Bergen Line (Bergensbanen).

    Landmarks:
Flåm Church - Church from the 1600s with modern design. Located nearby the railway tracks.

Rjoandefossen waterfall - A fall of 150 meters. Completely freezes in winter.

Kjosfossen waterfall - A fall of 225 meters. Also freezes in winter.

"Hylla" - A tunnel window. The railway goes through this tunnel and you can see the Flåm Valley from there.

I think this is a good suggestion for Dovetail Games where you can discover the beautiful nature of Western Norway and challenge yourself to drive on the steepest railway line in Northern Europe, especially with the new adhesion physics.

Please let me know if something is wrong and should be edited.

Sounds and looks really really good. But maximum speed 40 km/h is way to slow (for me :)). Still a nice proposal! Great effort.

True, but it would be a little bit like a more exciting West Somerset Railway route in my opinion.
A slow speed tourist route, but with more of a challenge considering the steep incline or descent, and in my own honest opinion, a lot more picturesque.

The route is of great interest to me, as my grandmother used to organize tourist excursions to Norway, and this was part of the stops.

I also remember reading a mystery novel as a kid that was set on this route.

However, the 40/30 km/h speed limit does make me doubt a bit whether it's my kind of gameplay. Still, I totally support this route, as I'm sure it will interest a lot of players!

On the more technical side, great suggestion it's detailed and informative!

The more I think about it, the more I wish we had VR support in TSW2. This railway is one that I would sit in the coach and ride an AI service just for the view.

Would be interesting to read about the history of all the stations that opened during WW2 - were they built by the occupation forces?

In Britain an episode of the Channel 5 show World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys was made in Norway and devoted some time to the Flåm line. It might still be available on line.

I've been finding videos to some of the great route suggestions that don't have them added in OPs. Here is one for Flåmsbana, with interesting facts about the route presented:

It would be nice but from DTG’s point of view they are going to be thinking of replay value and diverse activities as there really isn’t much to do other than up and down with the passenger trains. But unlike Arosa, in this case I think the scenery would sell the concept if done well. Just don’t put Rivet on the case.

Well, we already have many passenger-only routes for TSW2, and having one of, if not the most, spectacular scenic route of Europe represented would certainly not be a detriment.

Some more facts about the route, plus some lovely touches, like what seems to be a family feeling between workers of the line at 8:43 and 8:48 in the second video, where Gudrun Folkedal, a driver on Flåmsbana, is gesturing to them on approach.

Here is her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kommunikasjonssjefen/ , and here is one run by her and her twin sister, who is also a train driver: https://www.instagram.com/locomotwins/

Like it and for this Norwegian Locomotive it can serve as the base model for Luzern Sursee Re460 since NSB EL18 is part of Lok 2000 family.

No cab ride videos were added in previous posts, so here come two, in different seasons:
