I can’t seem to get this hang of this beast. I’m on sand patch and it was rolling along at 30, then I get to a 1.2% grade and it just gives up. Am I doing something wrong or are these things just this finicky?
How heavy is the train, and do you have the other engines set up correctly? (BTW, nothing of any size can maintain 30 up the Grade. In most cases you're lucky to hold 18 or so).
So it’s no wonder I stalled out on the line then. What should I do then? This is a timetable run and I checked the train from the twins to the end. All there is the twin SD40s
You should instead attempt the run with an AC44. That might be enough horsepower - if not, reload as long as you need until the game randomly selects an AC44 as your second loco as well.
This was on the clinchfield SD40 I’m not sure if all the engines on sand patch share the same timetable.
Another problem I have is just moving. I don’t know why but it takes forever and a half just to get the Clinchfield moving.
Most services are shared between all mainline locos on SPG (thus excluding the GP38). Releasing the brakes on a train of US scale takes ages. You should make sure that all your locos are set up correctly though (for example by using the spreadsheet by breblimator ).
I’ll take a look at it. In second attempt I made it to the curve where you start in the intro to sand patch. Crawling along at 11 but it’s better than where I was before.
To climb Sand Patch from the east requires roughly 1.5 horsepower per ton (hppt). That means for a 6000-ton train you need about 9000 hp, that is, 3 SD40s or 2 AC4400s. The reason these services with inadequate traction exist in the timetable is because they date from the old TSW1 version, where the physics were not as accurate and locos could climb mountains like Spider-man. The TSW2 revision made things more realistic, but these old services were not removed (mistakenly, IMO).
So then the clinchfield is practically worthless here? That’s a shame. I never use the locomotive since it’s a pain to get moving.
Not worthless, but it can't haul the really heavy trains. This is not surprising; it's almost 60 years old! Look for a lighter consist. Empty hoppers yes, loaded hoppers no. Containers are light. Mixed freight/manifest usually aren't that bad; just keep the train to about 4000 tons (or 6000 if you have 3 SD40s.)
