For those who are interested in japanese stuff, but don't know about it yet. I'm really excited for a new japanese route. We've known for a good while that they are working on an E5 Shinkansen, but the 701 series was a big surprise for me.

Only problem is that on their Twitter they have said that for now it's a Just Trains release only and they probably won't be able to release on Steam this year. Now I never bought TS add-ons from Just Trains, only from Steam. Can I install JT stuff on my Steam version, or do I need to wait for a Steam release?

You can. It just won't be linked to your Steam account. You'll need to install / reinstall it manually instead of ticking a checkbox in the Steam client.

I see, thanks. Well I will probably get it then from JustTrains when it gets released then.

Another advantage by buying from Just Trains is it normally has a larger number of Scenarios compared with the Steam version

For once a route where DTG's super strict career scoring system makes total sense!

Except it is not by DTG so it may not have Career Scenarios

I believe Union Workshop's routes also tend to have career scenarios with scoring.

The detailed description says: "The route is Quick Drive compatible and there are 11 Career scenarios included that cover both the both E5 and 701 series EMU for commuter and High Speed operations."

There can be career scenarios in 3rd party content, but there won't be Steam achievements.

I wonder if Quick Drive will feature AI traffic. That is a feature on some routes, right?

If there are any problems Just Trains will makes sure they are fixed quickly.
When Stuff from JT is released via Steam the updates can be slow filtering thru

I'm holding off with getting it until I watch some videos from full scenario runs recorded by players (replayed mostly with 6x-12x speed, with only some parts in 1x to listen to sounds). I've just checked if there are any new videos on YouTube presenting the route since the release, but there appears to be nothing new yet - only real world stuff.

I would love to buy this but not until I see some video reviews. Also, I have never bought from JT before so not sure how the install process works.

Well supposedly it will release on Steam as well at some point. Just not this year, probably, from what they have said on Twitter.

When you buy from JT you get a download link and you save the exe file to your computer.
You then run the exe file and it installs to your computer and you can also download the file again from JT if you want to

If there is an update JT inform you by email and you download the latest version.
Although it installs to the railworks folder it does not affect anything else in that folder.

JT presented the route on a stream, playing 2 included scenarios: regional - "Morning Breeze of a Middle Summer Day" & Shinkansen - "Summer Vibe":

It starts at 9 minutes, 14 seconds in the video, if the player isn't automatically jumping to 9:10.

I've seen a couple of other videos shared by players, however they've been so far presenting just Shinkansen part of the route, but for me the regional part seems to be much more interesting.

Thanks for the heads-up! Well, judging by the video the scenery does look a bit weak, but I will give it a go when it releases on Steam anyway.

Also that constant flickering of the gangway in the cab view was pretty bad, hopefully it gets fixed. Interestingly, the flickering gangway was/is an issue on their 105 series as well on the Wakayama Line.

I was surprised to see a large chunk of the Akita Shinkansen was included - Wonder if thats opening the possibility of a future E6 expansion.

Maybe a future steamer to for those that like that sort of thing

I think the steam loco is on a Cape Gauge line running next a standard gauge line
    Might be a C62 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JNR_Class_C62

What about the acceleration and deceleration rate? The Japanese game are professional on this.

Yep, that section is Dual Gauge. The Akita Shinkansen uses regauged sections of existing lines before joining the high speed line, they are operated as two parallel single tracks.

As these are upgraded lines the E6 is built to the normal Japanese loading gauge with shorter 20m cars and gap fillers for use on the High Speed line - The E5 is massive in comparison and cannot leave the high speed network. New build trains have to delivered by Ship and by Road.

as seen in the video: the tracks, especially the curves of the Highspeed are dissappointing for me. Union Workshop has already build a better HighSpeed route with smoother curves

Looks like an update is coming for the route, with various fixes, scenery update and even a new reskin for the 701 series. They posted about it on their Twitter yesterday.

Bug fixes are always welcome, and the green stripe livery for the 701 series fits it really well! As for the scenery update, I don't know what it may include, but I guess it's also some good news.

An advantage from buying from Just Trains is they will release fixes quicker than the same DLC purchased thru Steam.

I suppose that's true, they seem to be pretty fast with fixes and updates. Though I suppose by the time it will release on Steam, these fixes will be all implemented anyway, so Steam should get the "final" version.

I was already looking forward to getting the route, but with the new livery it's even better!

Steam will get the version that has faults corrected.
Updates beyond that point will only get uploaded when Steam gets around to it

JT updated the MML routes recently - how long will it be before Sheffield - Derby gets a Steam update?
    Don't hold your breath.

I can see where you are coming from - you don't wish to buy from Just Trains

Well yeah, all my other stuff are on Steam as well, so it would be weird to have only this one route from JustTrains.

    Ok, your loss.
Don't buy the JT Sheffield - Derby from Steam if you later wish to combine it with JT Derby - Nottingham - Leicester as it won't work

Well it's going to release on Steam at some point next year, so I will be getting it then. I understand that JT releases updates faster, but the same updates would come to Steam as well, even if later (assuming it will still be getting updates by that point, but I doubt it). I assume the updates that the route is getting now will be already included in the Steam release.

That's a fair point, but I mostly just buy the japanese routes for TS nowdays, so it doesn't affect me. Most of the time I play TSW, I only come back to TS for the japanese routes.

Is there a gameplay video with the 701 anywhere? I can't find anything on YouTube, all the content is about the E5.

Nevermind, just saw the video embedded above.

Seems like the vast majority of the commuter route is a straight line : (

There's another one from Just Trains - the 701 scenario is starting from around 1 hour 9 minutes in the video (and E5 is this time at the beginning from around 8 minutes in):

I got this line. So fun news Japan uses the same gauge as South Africa so I've been running my South African trains on the Japanese line!

Now on sale for £11.75 on Steam. Added to my collection after ditching the Ongakukan interactive cab ride product ( JR East). So far so good, about 2/3 through one of the local runs with the 701 Class EMU. It’s not the most scenic of lines but UW know their stuff and I’m already enjoying far more than the JRE sim. Looking forward to taking the Shinkansen out for a spin later.
