How many of you play both TS and TSW?

I only play TS as I see no point of playing both TS and TSW.

TS is enough for me :)

I mostly play TSW, but occasionally I will get back to TS for the japanese content. For example, a new japanese route just released for TS (Tohoku High Speed Rail & Main Line), meaning I will re-install it in the near future and get the route to try it. Last time I got back to TS when another japanese route, the Tadami Line released. I also occasionally just like to get back to the Wakayama Line.

But sadly TS's game engine and graphics are quite dated, I prefer TSW much more. So I re-install TS once in the while for the japanese stuff, but if TSW ever starts getting japanese routes, then I can happily "forget" about TS, I suppose.

I still play TS quite often, mainly for the variety of content and excellent 3rd party mods.

However I find myself playing TSW more frequently as the variety of content grows, and the main benefit of TSW for me is the timetable mode, being able to jump in and go rather than having the hassle of scenario creation for a realistic experience in TS.

I bought TSW when I thought it was getting interesting and wanted to support its development and then, just as the refund window closed, TSW2 came out. Oh you spent £20 getting the new program? Now it's the old one. Perhaps because of that I've hardly used TSW but I do have it.

I'll get to it some time.

I play both, TS when I want to drive on routes that aren't available in TSW, like for example the earlier mentioned Japanese, or some workshop stuff, TSW when I want to roleplay some more and not only drive a train from point A to B, like sometimes being a passenger for the AI trains or walk along the route between stations - for example recently I've been doing a couple of services in a row in timetable without exiting to main menu. Something like this isn't possible in TS without being specially scripted in the scenario.

Now and again I dip into TS but less and less frequently. It is there for the classic long routes like the WCML iterations, or something like Port Road. But once you experience the potential of the full day of operations in TSW, plus being able to walk around etc. there really is no going back to routes with half a dozen scenarios like Glasgow North Commuter. Very scant and frankly ridiculous.

I occasionally fire up the editor but more often than not find myself back in Trainz Surveyor as happened today. The TS editor is unwieldy and has had no love from DTG for many years. Not much use for doing model railway type routes either, which is what I tend to enjoy building these days.

I will once in a while go back and play TS, but tend to play more TSW myself.

I used to spend a lot of time in TS trying to create scenarios, and ones that aren't simply "drive from A to B, and maybe something will slow you down somewhere, but you're still going to B from A"
Unfortunately the route builders for TS don't seem to bother configuring things even slightly off route for this purpose, so if you want to (for example) put a train coming in from a branch line you would expect there to be a covering signal... Nope, not included
    Or speed signs
Even sidings configured as one way so you can drive in but not out again...

All of this has meant that software I have invested £100s in has sat completely dormant for most of 2021 and I don't think I will ever go back to it. I loved sitting there trying to create intricate and interesting (to me) scenarios, but the sheer lackadaisical attitude of route builders just got on my nerves, and to be fair to them, DTG are probably better at these finer details than the 3rd parties, almost all of which stick to very straightforward route building and almost always caused me issues

I also play both, and mainly TSW. I get back to TS when I want to play routes that are not available in TSW, e.g. Gotthardbahn and Mannheim-Karlsruhe, as well as Freiburg-Basel (which are all excelent routes)

I own TS but recently uninstalled it and now play TSW2 exclusively.

The main hook for getting TS to me was 3rd party content but I quickly found out how much of a mess it is dealing with content not sold on Steam. All of these manual installers, having to fork out lots of money for content to get a scenario to work as intended, etc. In the end it just wasn't worth all the fussing about, regardless of how good some of the 3rd party stuff is.

At least with TSW, all content goes through DTG and Steam. You're also guaranteed that the route you buy will work as an individual product without having to own anything else outside of the base TSW2 game.

I play TS much less, only for the French third party content.
With the improvements in TSW (physics, sound, route length, diversification of material), I spend most of my time on TSW.
What still restricts me on TSW is the creation of "complex" custom scenarios.

I can't play TS anymore. It just looks so bad in comparison to TSW. The only thing I would occasionally come back for is steam and nostalgia.

I m a new player to train sims and started with TSW but as it lacks longer routes i also play TS (50% / 50%).
What i like the most in TS are long routes (more than hour like 100 up to 200/300 miles, merging), variety, and the fact that the engine while old is able to show long distance landscapes... Something UE seems to struggle with.

Tsw is however far more immersive with people evrywhere, PIS, possibility of boarding trains, layers, timetables and so on...

I see no reason to limit myself and drive both sims - TS has some great scenarios in the workshop and for those complaining of DLC needs for scenarios - TsTools is your friend, just be sure to clone the scenario before modding. Also, US freight enthusiasts should not pass up the opportunity to drive in TS the best simulation of a US loco, including sounds - the Searchlight Simulations AC4400CW

Yeah, that's definitely a big plus for TS. Wish they could implement something like that in TSW as well, instead of the terrain tiles popping in in the distance.

Yes, I do wish Dovetail would do a Japanese route on TSW2. I used to like playing them from back in MSTS days.

I agree; it does seem quite primitive in comparison. Perhaps one day they'll bin TS and concentrate more on TSW2 (GD&R!)

TStools is a good tool, but not infallable, indeed you can break scenarios as well as "make them" and to be fair, I want to drive the scenarios as the author intended, so tstools is a bit like changing the actors in a film. It's the same film, but only sorta
Change out the wrong thing and you would affect timings, and therefore interactions

TS looks outdated. I rarely play it, there is so much content for TSW2 right now.

Yep, true that DTG failed to update TS to modern standards. That probably why they have done TSW, maybe because a heavly update of TS would be far too difficult/ex pensive.
TS is so clungy at times, you cant even change keyboard assignments.... the UI is from 2000s, as the graphics, but still i dont care and have a real pleasure to drive on TS routes. Even if some needs tinkering with.

Like everyone else, I pretty much no longer play TS anymore except to do a Time Lapse Video of a new Route here and there, and since I started playing TSW2 I honestly haven't wanted to go back, despite the amount of money I have spent on it.

Being a Sim fanatic, and not a Rail fanatic, having a "large collection" isn't as important to me as interaction and a realistic feel is, which TSW2 brings, especially on the Timetable Services.

As mentioned above, you can get some amazing Scenario's through external sites, but yes, to have ALL the DLC required to just run 1 Scenario just doesn't justify it unless you already own that Content, and using TSTools is not something everyone wants to be doing. Atleast with TSW2 the Timetable can offer some diversity, and not to mention the Layers, having newly bought DLC also add extra Content and AI in other Routes is just well worth it.

Why just drive Trains though? I was running around swapping Junctions couple days ago for a AI CSX Service Cutting Cars. Good fun.

I would not call this failure. TS uses technology that is 15 years old. Since that time the world changed a lot. To bring it up to standards would be a complete rebuild from the ground. So they created TSW, which is a huge improvement with the lack of a content editor the main thing we will miss, but on the other hand, developing content for TSW is much harder than it was for TS.

I find that the two titles offset each other. In some respects (sense of travel, railroad sounds, railroad complexity, lighting and engine physics TS remains superior to TSW. TSW excels in graphics.
In other words, I could compare TS to The Elder Scrolls while TSW to a Gears Of War. Both titles, albeit on different paths, are solid. Of course, I think we would all dream of having a single title that combines the strengths of TS and TSW.

Agreed. I love the variety and I keep trying to dip into it. The biggest let down for me is being spoiled by the tsw2 visuals.

Can you explain this one ? I thinked that the way trains are conceived in TSW they should be a better représentation of their real world counterpart.
By the way in TS there is a lack of interaction with your train, no doors closing, limited lights choices, maybe its only gimmicks but still i dont find TS trains (at least default) to be very réalistes nor immersive...
Still I love the journey TS is able to produce.

I try to explain it to you with a video, but with a premise. This ICE 2 that I use in the video is not the best train to demonstrate the physicality of the engine during the braking phase (also being a fairly dated DLC). For this specific detail, I invite you to see the videos of the DB BR 101 Pro Line or the DB BR 218 (both much more recent). Additionally, both titles feature different quality DLCs. The DB BR 101 Pro Line for example has many settable functions that the ICE 2 (or at least the one I use in the video) does not have. Anyway I chose this video because it contains all the features explained in my previous post.

I bought both games at the same time from Steam a few short days ago. Played both a bit before settling on TSW2. As a new player, it was really not much of a contest - TSW feels more immersive with first person walking about, higher quality graphics. Just liked the "feel" and immersion more. I will try TS again one day, but having just taken out a second mortgage on some TSW2 DLC (j/k), I'll stick with TSW2 for a while.

I played TS as a kid, and then bought TSW around 2-ish years ago. I've tried playing TS again, but I just couldn't get used to the fact that you can't just stand up and walk around. Sticking to TSW is what suits me best.

I do hope to see some more of TS's variety in TSW though, currently we're restricted to three main countries with a few small exceptions (Switzerland, Canada and France). It would be fun to see more of these exceptions such as a Swiss mainline or a French commuter route, and also some new countries like Austria, Sweden, and of course: the Netherlands! :) A German vintage route or two would also be really interesting.

Not too hopeful that variety will ever come though.

I think all of these are what 3rd party could create. DTG will focus on the big three, because they specialised on that. And that's good, because you can basically see that with every german release the quality of the routes get better and better. Imagine them developing for example a swedish route - it would be an almost inevitably bad route scenerywise and probably also signalling.
The only exception i see in your list is Austria - they did an austrian route for TS, same signalling as in germany, the 182 can perfectly be reused as well as the base model and sounds of the IC-Coaches. I think ÖBB will come to TSW at a given time. And of course the 185.5 can also do freight there.

I guess (or rather: hope) this will be the case with the first german steam loco. I doubt it will be a loco DLC only, but a route + loco, as a loco DLC requires at least one other DLC and i don't think a loco DLC could offset the costs of the production.

I have owned TS for a few years but hardly ever played it and then got TSW2 which I hardly play now as even though my favourite route is in the game I'm still waiting for RD support.

Saying that TSW2 looks good graphically compared to TS, TS still offers enjoyment. I saw a video recently of a TS route, Paddington to Exeter where I think 6 routes were 'joined' and there was other enhancement mods some free. I think he said the total cost was about £60. Watching the video it looked far better than I thought it would, obviously it lacks TSW2 polish but looked like fun and they say 'graphics' isn't everything eh?

For me I think TSW2 lacks a 'career mode' imo it would transform the whole game if done properly. As for 'other country' routes coming to TSW2, DTG have said it isn't on their radar but would encourage third party developers to come forward. I have always wondered why TSW2 lacks third party developers. I know it has 3 or 4? but the way the game is I thought there be more.

I have both TS and TSW and id say the biggest difference is the ability to create content in TS.
I bought the TS Deluxe Edition with 4 Routes, and 4 extra Routes (some with extensions) in a sale, but i have nearly 20 Routes installed.
There is a huge Community creating freeware content apart from Repaints and scenarios. You can get a fantastic CD 380 (DB BR 102), German, Swiss and austrian IC/EC Coaches and a complete ÖBB Cityshuttle trainset, with loco and driveable Cab car in a payware quality, completely for free without other Payware dependencies, which is a huge barrier for a lot of routes, but there is a good amount of routes you can install without having to buy other content for hundrets. This is a thing which a TSW Player can only dream of. For example the upcoming Tharandter Rampe route for TSW is TS Freeware, and its really good.

But I would say the quality of TSW content is better in general, I know there are really good TS Addons, but there are also some really, really horrible ones, much worse than the Arosaline or the 187, so it goes very far in both directons.
Of course TSW is looking Superior and the walking around feature is a big Advantage, but TS has longer and much more routes, I can drive from Cologne nearly 400 kms to Offenburg without skipping a part of the journey.
So one is not better than the other, there is just a Simulator more suited for you and your priorities. :)
