Sometimes I settle down to driving a nice route, it is a wonderfully relaxing game, next thing I know is that I have woken up to a SPAD or on an American freight route, it has run away and derailed. All part of the game I suppose
At 66, I realise I might have to set aside some ambitions. There is a hole in the 'bucket list' bucket.
LOL Dudley. At 55 I still totally understand about the relaxing drive part - the amount of times I've clocked up speeding penalties and/or SPADed or game over by passing a red, is quite substantial.
Never mind Dudley, at 72 I'm still enjoying being in control, but I seem to get woken up a lot by the vigilant control activating lately. mmmmmmm
I’m 55 (but still waiting to grow up). It’s happened to me more than once that I’ve woken up to a Spad.
Well, at 42 I felt like I was getting old, but this thread makes me feel like a proper whippersnapper. Train Simulator certainly appeals to the broadest age demographic, which is pretty ace.
I tend to go more for the city/suburban routes, as there's always something to keep you alert, whether stopping at a station, adverse signals or speed limit changes. I find some of the xCML routes can be less demanding in that way (as it's not real life!), and you can find yourself losing attention. You can be tempted to have a look around externally, but that always seems to result in a missed AWS alert and an emergency brake application!
Managed a 4 hour plus run from London Kings X to Edinburgh I only nodded off several times! There's a stark contrast in route quality though, that old east coast north from York to Newcastle needs the trackwork ripping up along with JT's Newcastle to Edinburgh route and needs to be brought up to today's standards with superelevation and the removal of those horrific nooo I'm coming off the rails moments grade changes and specifically JT's Newcastle to Edinburgh short sharp course corrections! Creative rails Peterborough York route could do with the same treatment and those three routes HD'ing too to bring them up to DTG's standard.
That happens to me when my wife and I go shopping. I'm tempted to look at all the pretty girls (especially in summer!) and that always results in a missed AWS alert (Angry Wife Stare)
I'm at the age now (coupled with the fact my Wife is truly awesome) where she smacks me on the arm and says "your slipping in your old age you nearly missed that one there"..
Have not yet fortunately fallen asleep at the controls yet in TS - and turning on the DSD certainly helps. I too have I done the entire East Coast (Edinburgh - Kings Cross) route drive in one Scenario - but did take the precaution under the banner of "Train Crew Changes" factoring into my timetable a couple of longer station stops at Newcastle, York and Peterborough for "comfort breaks". I did wonder if comfort breaks would be aloud with real train drivers? Wonder if you could help me please - do you know where I can find a north bound Kings Cross to Edinburgh pre built scenario? (I have built my own for Southbound).
A real driver in the UK would not be expected to drive all the way from Edinburgh to Kings Cross A change of crew would take place at either Newcastle and/or York. No reason to have a comfort break in the sim. Look at Realtime trains if you wish to know how long a train would be at a station https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C25082/2022-01-05/detailed#allox_id=0
Age doesn't stop you, it just slows you down. I've a good memory - for everything that I can remember. nearer 74 than 73 (my age not my waistband)
I don't think anyone would play a simulator if they had to wait 6 minutes while everyone boarded LOL ! I looked at the Times...
I quite like a few minutes of passenger loading, it allows you the time to jump out of the cab and explore your surroundings. OMG I sound like I am about to ditch TS & buy Track Side Walker.LOL
I never thought about that. I always want to go outside and look around, yet fear time running out, so I remain in cab, except for a few outside photos. Instead of being impatient when I do get a longer wait time, I can go out and explore. Thanks for the idea!
