Which UK route contains the largest yard? Hamburg - Hanover is a German route which contains the Maschen Marshalling Yard, which is the largest in Europe. Which is the largest in the UK and which route contains it? If not, which is the largest UK yard represented in Train Simulator today?
According to Wikipedia, these are current yards. Not sure which is the biggest. Ayr: Falkland Yard Birmingham: Bescot Yard (reconstructed 1966) Birmingham: Washwood Heath Cardiff: Cardiff Tidal Sidings Didcot: Didcot Yard Doncaster: Decoy Yard and Belmont Yard Edinburgh: Millerhill Yard (opened 1963; substantially closed 1983) Glasgow: Mossend Hither Green London North Kent: Hoo Junction Yard, Gravesend Newport: Alexandra Dock Junction (Newport Junction) Sidings Nottingham: Toton Yard Port Talbot: Margam Knuckle Yard(opened 1960) Swansea: Swansea Burrows Sidings Middlesbrough: Tees Yard, Thornaby (opened 1963) Newcastle upon Tyne: Tyne Yard, Lamesley (opened 1963) Wakefield: Healey Mills Marshalling Yard(opened 1963,closed 2012) Warrington (serving Liverpool and Manchester): Arpley Sidings Wiltshire: Westbury Sidings London: Willesden Brent Sidings, and Wembley Yard (New construction on the site of the former Willesden Yard)
Toton is probably the largest today. Other yards used to be larger but have been scaled back over the decades as freight demand has decreased - take Tyne yard as an example. Carlisle Kingsmoor Yard and Crewe Basford Hall are fairly sizeable too.
Don't forget the private 'yards' in steelworks. When I was at Scunthorpe (1999-2000) it claimed to have the heaviest used track in Europe with more tons/mile than anywhere else. At the time it had 70 miles of private track, much of which was intensively used for moving iron and steel from one process to the next. Not to mention the weekend sight-seeing trains run by the on-site heritage railway! Bescot yard (Walsall) is near me and both large and extensively populated with rolling stock, albeit much of that is engineers' wagons.
not sure why you have linked to Wikipedia pages about locations as most have little rail information regarding yard size I could not find any mention of Arpley Sidings on Warrington Page linked to Didcot and Warrington Arpley are quite small in railway terms Arpley Sdgs has around 18 roads in the main yard with another 10 in Walton Old Jn sdgs and 4 in the MSC sdgs I think Didcot has around 8 sidings
Thank you for your help. Much appreciated. When I first started with TS, I preferred passenger runs. When I started with TSW, things remained the same, but I started liking freight as well. Nowadays I enjoy both and realize what I have been missing out on with freight in TS.
If you are interest in yards, this might be of interest: https://www.railwaymagazine.co.uk/1361/the-rise-and-fall-of-britains-railway-marshalling-yards/
Did some digging during lunch.... World's Largest - Bailey Yard (USA) 2,850 acres Europe's Largest - Maschen Marshalling Yard 692 acres Canada's Largest - Symington Yard 998 acres Honorable Mention - MacMillan Yard (Canada) 741 acres I added MacMillan which is the 2nd largest in Canada because it is close to my home!
Tyne Yard in old Newcastle-York is right there, if not the largest. It's actually a chain of 3-4 yards. Picking anything around 1950-1960 should be suitable. (Old) Woodhead also has numerous yards at every size you can dream about. There was enough centralisation and demand, but the need for optimisation didn't kick in yet. I wouldn't worry too much, though, as you cannot really fill them. I tried once, and didn't even get close. Nothing less glorious than Barstow yard with three consists of 30 wagons each.
I just grabbed Doncaster works before the sale ended. I watched a few videos and found this to be a unique DLC.
When you go shunting around there are a number of withdrawn locos in the sheds The Traverser is fun with G or Shift+G to get it to move I just use different locos and units to shunt
Thanks again 749006 I appreciate all the help you do around here. I am looking forward to shunting with this DLC.
If you like shunting, there's a good Class 09 scenario ('Night Shunter') included in this pack: https://store.steampowered.com/app/376950/Train_Simulator_BR_Blue_Diesel_Electric_Pack_Loco_AddOn/ I recall some shunting scenarios on the Woodhead Electric in Blue route too.
Perfect. Thanks inversnecky Just checked my library and I do have BR Blue Diesel Electric Pack and the Chatham Main Line: London-Gillingham which has the "Night Shunter" scenario. I also have BR Blue Pack for Weardale and Teesdale Network. I have plenty to entertain me during our latest lockdown which began this morning at midnight (EST).
That pack also includes one of my favourite scenarios - a Class 73 parcels train on Chatham. Really tests your skill with the 73’s tap changer, constant change of speed limits, plus adverse signals!
Just looked it up on Google Maps. Nice! I wonder which TS route(s) contain this. Edit: It is on Great Western Main Line. Not sure if it's modelled in the route. I will have to load this after work and see.
North Pole was a depot created for the Eurostar Trains on the South Side of the Mainline and is not very big Old Oak Common Depot is on the North Side of the line and is massive. It features in the Great Western Mainline route which is quite old by TS Standards Search on Google for Old Oak Common and you will get a lot of pictures as it was a famous depot in Steam days where the GWR locos and stock were maintained
Note. Old Oak Common is great for shotting a populated scene like a weekend storage of coaches, but as you can see from the layout it's not run-through nor does it have a nice (enough) lead and the buildings clearly show it's for passenger equipment. Nothing against it, just pointing out, depends on what you want to do Might not even care about realism, I didn't for the first 3-4 years. If you like OOC but want something better looking, the new PDL offers some. Wimbledon: Clapham Junction: In fact the excessive lines continue for quite a while towards Victoria for extended whatever:
Ah thats the other one old oak common North pole is now owned by Hitachi I believe, before it was eurostar.
I think you are right and they maintain the GWR 80x units and some LNER sets have also visited https://foremanroberts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/IEP-North-Pole-Depot-London.jpg
There is a Toton Yard layout in the Workshop developed by T3rr4h4wk, from about 2013. It just contains the yard trackage and a mile or so at each end to create consists, unsure if it had portals now, I can't remember. It is set in the late-1990s-early 2000s, however, with a bit of poetic licence you can make it into a 1960s/70s/80s route if you wish, we have plenty of scenery assets and lots of different loco packs and freight wagons to make up authentic trains with. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=181472108 Cheerz.
