The Kempten (Allgäu) –Ulm railway is a non-electrified and predominantly single-track main line from Kempten (Allgäu) via Memmingen to Ulm. It follows the course of the Iller along its entire length and is therefore also called the Illertalbahn or Illerbahn.
Because rafting on the Iller came to a standstill due to the construction of weirs and hydropower plants during industrialization and road transport was not worthwhile, some citizens of Kempten came up with the idea of a railway line to Ulm in 1843. However, the state had no interest in building a further railway in this area.

Because the city of Memmingen in the Bavarian district of Swabia was not involved in the planning of the country's first railways, the city took the initiative to build the line and received the concession for it on September 13, 1861. To this end, she took out a loan of around 3.5 million guilders and had to take care of the land purchase and construction work herself. The first section to Memmingen was opened on October 12, 1862, the second on June 1, 1863. The cities of Memmingen (leading) and Kempten took out a loan through a private company for financing.

The Royal Bavarian State Railways provided the vehicles and ran the operation on the route they leased. Because of the more than local importance of the railway, the Bavarian state acquired it on April 12, 1876. Thus, the private company's mortgage was also replaced.

Since the completion of the Neu-Ulm 21 rail project in 2009, the Illertalbahn has had four tracks from the new transfer point at the Finninger Strasse stop to the Neu-Ulm trough station.

In the Memmingen – Ulm section, the line is one of the busiest single-track railway lines in Germany, especially between Senden and Neu-Ulm. An average of around 7,500 passengers are transported here every day.

    Long-distance transport

The route is used by the Intercity Allgäu, which runs once a day from Oberstdorf via Kempten and Ulm to Dortmund. In the opposite direction, the Allgäu runs from Ulm as a regional express and can be used with local transport tickets. Both trains are hauled by two class 218 diesel locomotives between Stuttgart and Oberstdorf.

    Regional traffic
Regional express trains on the RE 75 line run every hour from Ulm via Kempten to Oberstdorf. This offer is supplemented by two regional train lines that run every hour from Ulm via Senden to Memmingen or Weißenhorn. As part of the Regio-S-Bahn Donau-Iller, they have been known as RS7 and RS71 since December 2020. Both the regional express and the regional S-Bahn connections are operated by DB Regio Bayern. From Kellmünz to Neu-Ulm, the route is integrated into the Donau-Iller local transport network (DING).

    Bombardier Talent DB BR 643 / 644
The Regional Express connections have been served by Pesa Link diesel multiple units since December 2020, while Alstom Coradia LINTs are used for the Regio S-Bahn. Before that, diesel railcars of the 612 series as well as Siemens Desiro Classic and Bombardier Talent operated.

On the Ulm to Memmingen route, also in the other direction, all trains meet in Illertissen.

To complete the Illertal route from Kempten to Oberstdorf (Allgäu) to the source of the river Iller. This route was then used by the DB BR612 until the 2019/20 timetable change. Today the Pesa BR 633 drives.
The timetable ran as a Regio Express from Ulm to Lindau and Oberstdorf in double carriages of the BR612 to Immenstadt. There the DMU was separated. The front continued to Lindau and the rear DMU continued to Oberstdorf. An Intercity also runs from Oberstdorf to Dortmund and back in the timetable. To this day, they are pulled by two class 218 diesel locomotives. The stops of the IC 2012 "Allgäu" are Kempten, Memmingen and then Ulm on this Illertal route.
