As my SSD is now struggling under the weigh of TS but mainly my son's assorted games, I'll thinking of upgrading from a 1TB to a 2TB SSD. (I currently have an ADATA SU800.) Looking at my local PC shop, I'm rather bemused as the various types - is any really better for TS (as opposed to "shoot 'em up" video games), or will the cheapest do the job perfectly well? (I realise these might not be the best prices.) Many thanks! 2.5” SATA SSD 2TB NETAC N600S - £162 2TB Samsung 870 EVO - £243 M.2 NVMe Gen3 SSD 2TB Kingston NV1 - £158 2TB Seagate Barracuda Q5 - £180 M.2 NVMe Gen4 SSD 2TB ADATA XPG Gammix S70 Blade - £290 (I do recall discussion re M.2 suggesting it made no difference in terms of TS performance.)
Does it have to be a ssd?. I have just bought a 4tb external hdd from pc world £72 as i had filled the hardrive on my laptop during the steam sale at xmas. I transfered everything except ts2020 onto the external drive plus all the new games i bought, i have doom eternal, cod ww2 ,mortal kombat 11 plus quite a few others and they work just as good as if they are installed on the computer itself.
I Any decent SATA III SSD is adequate for TS20XX. I use a NVME SSD because of other games that I play, TS doesn't need that oomph! A NVME SSD can deactivate 2 SATA slots (or a PCIe slot) on your motherboard so if you have a lot of SATA peripherals (CD/DVD, HDD's etc) just be aware of that. I also use an external USB Samsung T5 SSD and that runs TS Ok too.
I have been running out of space and yesterday I ordered a 2TB Samsung 870 EVO from Amazon.uk for £203.84 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08PC5ZYB1/?th=1
870 EVO a great choice. To the OP... ANY SSD will be OK for TS. You don't need a NVMe.. or even a M.2... a SATA one is just fine.
I've just ordered a 2tb crucial p5 gen3 nvme, on amazon for £150 at the moment. Deal: Crucial P5 2 TB CT2000P5SSD8 Internal Solid State Drive-up to 3400 MB/s (3D NAND, NVMe, PCIe, M.2, 2280SS) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0892TWDP1/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_g_dl_J0PMTC3S654C2S192BCB
Thanks for the advice so far, guys. I’ve never installed my own. Is it straightforward enough, or are you risking messing everything up?
It depends if this is replacing a drive or becoming a extra capacity drive. Does your computer have the space for this extra internal drive - it needs physical space and SATA connections to the motherboard If you are not sure it would be worth finding a local Computer Guy to check and install
Yes, I have always used a local shop, might not be the cheapest, but they'll do it right. I'd be looking for the contents of my current 1TB C drive to be cloned to a new 2TB C drive. I'll have to check with them if there's enough slots. I already have two SSDs in there, so if the answer's no, the current D drive (only 256GB) can come out.
That would make sense to remove the D drive and replace that. And removing Steam from the same drive as the operating system is recommended
Hi folks. Wanted to ask something re SSDs. I've got a 2TB Samsung 870 QVO being delivered today. I know how to install it and have quite a few SATA connections available to use. My question is, how to move Steam and contents to the SSD from the HDD without uninstalling everything and reinstalling so my games run from the SSD (keeping the HDD as a back up).
