Lyon, but this year has taken cake and the club no longer shares my values. Barely watched them lately but watch a ton across the big six leagues (Sporting especially)

Željezničar, Lech Poznań and Horwich RMI when they still existed, of course.

#1 is my national team, my passion, my love: Scotland.

My club is my local one (I'm not naming them, they're bottom of the league :(), and my English Team* is Everton.

*Up here we typically tag on an "English Team" as well as our own (Scottish) team.

It is the most overrated game ever and it gets far too much attention in media.

Well you’re entitled to your opinion, and I get it if you don’t like it, you don’t need to explain why you don’t like something if you just don’t like something, but don’t spoil it for everyone else!

I dunno, the media typically have seperate sports journalists - who specialise in sports - meaning it doesn't detract from their main teams, most sites (from the average newspaper to things like the BBC) have seperate sport sections, and most sport is now on dedicated channels.

At that, it hardly gets "too much attention", considering ~3.5 billion people are estimated to be fans of the game, making it have approx. 45% of the world's population on it's side - by far the largest of any sport.

Of course, your opinion is your own, but the bit about the media is wrong.

    P.S. It's not overrated, it's fabulous.

    Football/Soccer - Newcastle Jets, Socceroos
Rugby League - Newcastle Knights, whoever is playing against Manly or Melbourne, Kangaroos
Rugby Union - NSW Waratahs, Wallabies
Aussie Rules - St Kilda (although sometimes I wonder why I bother, and I barely bother to begin with)
American Football - Washington "Insert Name Here", Jacksonville Jaguars, whoever is playing against New England (yes, I'm a sucker for punishment, but there's a reason why I support those two)

Otherwise, I could think of few things more tedious things than watching a Fooball match. *insert grumbling about overpriced players kicking a bit of leather around a pitch for 90 mins*

I couldn’t be less interested in football if I tried. Lots of hot, young sweaty men running around for 90-minutes. I should love it, but alas, it bores me to tears.

Now youse guys think youse talking about " football ", but actually you mean " soccer. "
Y'see, over on this side of the pond, " football " means only one thing. There's still eleven a side but they're kicking and throwing an oval ball. And there's only one team that really counts: Da Bears.

The Aussies play with a similar ball and call it " football ". But that game is totally incomprehensible to any living human outside of that country and many within it I imagine. :D:D

Actually, in Australia if you say "football" now it more increasingly refers to what was called (and often still is, but in decreasing frequency) "soccer". There are 3 other main ball sports which are also referred to as "footy"* (rarely "football" unless in formal situations), two are well known and understood outside of the country (rugby league and rugby union), and which one someone is talking about is heavily state/class-based - you're probably referring to Australian Rules ("Aussie Rules/AFL"), which is extremely dissimilar to NFL/gridion/American Football (more closely aligned with Gaelic Football, enough so that a hybrid "International Rules" format allows Australia to play Ireland competitively despite each individual sport essentially being unique to that country)

*There are some weird etymological/demographical traits with Aussie ball sports
    1) What was traditionally Soccer (Association Football) is more commonly being called just "football" due to an increase in awareness of the game at a world level (and Australia's more frequent participation in World Cups etc), but never called "footy". Popularity is relatively even across country and class, although historically centred on Melbourne and Sydney due to large Mediterranean immigrant populations
    2) Rugby League is the "working man's game" on the east coast (New South Wales/Queensland, with a small Victorian following), and if you're in either of those states it is what 90% of people will think of when you say "footy". Also just called "league"
    3) Rugby Union is the "posh man's game", also predominantly east-coast based. Not often called "footy" due to the relatively (compared to league) small/niche following, often just called "union"
    4) Australian Rules - the "everyman's game" in states without big Rugby League followings (Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, and a bit in QLD and NSW). If you're in Adelaide or Melbourne and hear "footy", 99% of the time they're talking about this (unless it's a Melbourne Storm supporter)

And to make it more confusing, there were two weekly TV shows both called "The Footy Show", on the same channel and same day, and over the same time period (mid 90's till now) - one for League and one for AFL. The timeslot was dependent on which market you were in (prime-time for the popular one, late-night for the unpopular one)

No, what you call Football is “American Football”. What you call Soccer is Football. The clue’s in the name. FOOTball, not pick it up and throw it ball. :D I even refuse to call Rugby football. Actually, we in the UK also use the term Soccer (which is short for Association Football). One of our most popular programmes is Soccer Saturday.

Aussie Rules (or footy) used to confuse me no end until I understood the concept of the Mark. Then it sort of made sense. BT Sport in the UK televise several live games a week in the season.

BTW, I loved the picture of the Rams on their victory parade with “World Champions” on the front of their bus. I must have missed all the European, Asian and African entries. :)

Yes, it's very pompous of Americans to use phrases like " World Champions " and even more pretentious to talk about the baseball " World Series ", but the latter goes back over 100 years, so it's ingrained in our culture. Sorry.

At least the World Series has the tiniest of credence due to the fact that the MLB includes a team from another country...although even that team plays in a stadium only like 40 miles as the crow flies from the border.

Football in the UK has always meant Football or if you want to be pedantic 'Association Football'. The term 'Soccer' came about by some Toffs who didn't want the term 'Football' to be confused with 'Rugby Football' and so the term 'Soccer' was dreamt up and is a kind of slur or it was back then. To me Football is Football and then there is American Football and Aussie rules Football so I don't get confused (as if);)

Soccer still sounds right to my ears but "rugger" (which was a common term back when "soccer" was derived from association football) is just odd (although lots of British public-school terms just sound weird). Compounding the Aussie peculiarities I mentioned above, "rugby" (in isolation) only ever refers to rugby union here (never league), neither are ever called "rugby union football" or "rugby league football", and "rugby football" means nothing (probably due to Australia still not being heavily colonised/advanced at the time of the union/league split in the mid 19th century)

There are multiple interpretations of the origins/meaning of the "foot" in football (and no real way of saying which is correct), but you can argue on several fronts that its original form that rugby is still football
    1) It is played "on foot" (as opposed to the toff's sport, polo)
    2) You score points by kicking the ball - originally, the only points in rugby were scored by kicking goals, the try was literally just to set up the chance to "try" for a goal and carried no points value of its own.

'Rugger' is usually used like you say by the Public-school system and tbh sounds a lot better than 'soccer' imo. The term 'Rugby' over here generally means both but usually when explaining we say 'Rugby Union' or 'Rugby League' but when someone says 'you coming to the Rugby?' you are expected to know the difference and if you don't if you can count to 15 then you will know what is what.

What is strange to some is that in England at least Football started as a 'working class' game for the masses and Rugby was for the privileged by over time it is slowly swapping roles.

On a couple of occasions . Whilst I don’t have a problem with the actual discussion , I’d prefer it not to be in this thread
