The Britannia Bridge across the Menai Strait linking Wales with the island of Anglesey. It was named Britannia bridge because the middle pier is built upon Britannia rock.
Originally built as a box girder bridge and opened in 1850, it was a feat of engineering designed and built by Robert Stephenson (an example of a box girder bridge can be seen further down the line at Conwy).
Unfortunately in May 1960, fire took hold inside the iron tubes and spread across the length of the bridge. The box girders were heavily damaged by the fire and sagging by several feet and the tubes were deemed structurally unsafe.
A decision was made to rebuild the bridge but several changes were made. A road deck was to be added above the rail line and steel arches would be placed under the rail line to add support which is the bridge we see today.
The bridge reopened in single line form using one of the tubes whilst the other tube was dismantled and a concrete deck was laid. When this was done, the track was relaid and single line working was moved to the new concrete side.
The second tube was then dismantled and a concrete deck was laid. This would not contain the rail line and would be used for access instead.
The road deck was then installed above the rail line and officially opened in July 1980.

Famous London skyscrapers, including The Shard, the "Walkie-Talkie" and the Gherkin are visible from the tracks leading to London Waterloo. The skyline is flanked by a train of Class 450s, arriving from Portsmouth Harbour on the Portsmouth Direct Line.

It's an HST repaint, the original Pullman power cars had a different nose, more side grilles and hauled shorter coaches (60ft).

In the background, you can see the ArcelorMittal Orbit. This strange looking landmark is a 114.5 metre high sculpture and observation tower, and it also includes world's tallest and longest tunnel slide going a total of 178 metres! It was designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. It was opened in 2012, and is located at Stratford, London.

    Okey dokey folks, decision time......
Firstly my apologies for the late posting of winners, was out with family last night.
As ever a massive thanks to all for contributing, the standard as always was brilliant but a choice has to be made so, here we go:
The 3rd Place honour goes to Random Railfan for this terrific Amtrak Dash 8-32BWH in front of the Willis Tower shot.
Love the way you captured the light with the long shadows.

Equal 2nd place and runner up for this week goes to cscarpenter for the grubby old 411
    [IMG]
and also the withdrawn from comp Class 31 @ Blackpool.
I really liked this one, I personally prefered it to your Scottish Class 37.

So finally my decision for Winner of week 4 is ...............................................
...... it just has to go to mfeets
for this amazing re-creation of the Driving of the Golden Spike.
It must have taken ages setting that up and it looks terrific in B/W
Well done mfeets for a worthy winning creation.
I hand over the Master Key to your good self to take us all forward to Week 5 with a theme of your own choice..

Couldn't agree more, and by the way, I loved the low viewpoint of your Cologne shot.
It is getting harder by the week to try and select the best of the bunch they are all so good.
