I get that DTG want to get a larger audience, but why have they joined TikTok!. TikTok is the worst thing to exist ever. Just look at the comments on their Twitter post about it.

Sign of the times, I guess. For myself, I've managed to live a pretty long life without even glancing at social media. To quote none other than Lady Gaga: "Social media is the toilet of the internet". :)

She ain't wrong! I only have an Instagram account and I do absolutely no socialising on it whatsoever, I solely use it to look at other people's railway shots :)

Even then, I get these daft tik tok-like videos on there are people doing silly dances and whatnot in the explore feed... My biggest question is, how on earth do these people get popular? Surely there must be better stuff to watch than people lip syncing stuff?

Tik Tok - I don’t even know what that is. I know ‘the’ kids do silly dances on it and that’s about it, I have no idea how it works. It’s one of the new social media platforms that will always spring up. No young people would ever want to be on the same social media as their parents so new ones have to take over, each one worse than the last. Probably. I have facebook, where I get some info about what some people I know are up to and some interesting things pop up on it. It’s the one that is most needed if you are a grown up as lots of legitimate groups use it as their only form of communication. I also have twitter and instagram which I never use. I have never eaten washing detergent.

Other things I don’t know how to use include discord and reddit, and there are probably lots of other ones I don’t even know about. I’m already slightly disconcerted about the number of things I am signed up to and I won’t add to that for no good reason. I’m currently signed into Apple and Google and signed into this forum just to be able to type this. I’m just glad i didn’t have to sign into my clothes or enter a password to sit on my sofa. Little wins.

If TikTok were a game, it would be Fortnite. Both are popular for reasons which elude me, and I am happy to keep it that way.

I like the creativity on there - though I don't entirely get why some the memes there are a thing, I can appreciate the work that creators put in - especially the makeup ones - but not sure what the DTG TikTok would be - Matt playing TS using a Dance Dance Revolution mat? Jamie does drag?

I used to be happier with Tumblr.

Also I can think of far worse things to exist. Mr Blobby's pop career for a start!

Why not be on Tik Tok? Doesn't bother me. I don't have a Tik Tok account. It's not like it's going to take away any development budget because they'll all be making Tik Tok videos. Seems to be complaining for the sake of it.

I notice on Facebook a couple of people that regularly post negative stuff on TSW making a fuss about it. I bet they've now got Tik Tok accounts so they can complain there as well!

Yeah, the Social Media folk wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't have company accounts set up on popular social networks. TikTok has something like 700 million users, which company wouldn't want to try and reach them?

I'm pretty sure whichever app the team use for videos is capable of outputting in formats for all the big social networks, so adding TikTok could just be as simple as Tiking a box.

Marketing is marketing, making use of as many avenues as possible to promote the game is not a bad thing.

Even so, if people (like me) have literally no interest in TikTok then why should we care, it makes literally no impact on our lives whatsoever. It's nothing to be upset about.

I don´t get why either if it´s just teens dancing, lip singing and posting memes. I mean I don´t use it even though my girlfriend keeps trying to make me be on her tik tok. If it helps with marketing then I guess it´s a good thing but considering how train simulation is already a niche product, I don´t see this making a massive impact in attratiing new customers

They might try adult-only networks. One expects the half-naked person on cam and instead finds Matt showing him how to use the safety systems on the German railway.

Stop looking for porn. Start looking for TSW (-> Join the discussion)

Is that their acutal workforce? I was only an agency worker, and we couldn't even rely on the agency to help us/back us up. Even to the agency, we were disposable. I wish I had listened to the warnings I had been given against working there, it would have saved me from the feeling of what it must be like in prison.

At least it may spark an intrest for future railfans that may use it, footage of the livery designer could fit in quite well with the creative side of it. Most of my friends have it and I bet many younger people with a phone will have it as well. Other than YouTube, TV and various things on the internet, without having a person take you to events, exibitions, galas or a railway there aren't many other ways of developing a love for railways today. This has been amplified in the past year when less events have been on and everything has moved online where it isn't the same experience. DTG are just expanding which will allow them to develop more as a company and be able to output more and higher quality routes with less bugs at release in the future.

TikTok is no longer an application where teenagers dance to rhythmic music and record meaningless videos. Many companies use this application as a platform to attract a new audience. Among the genres of content, you can find educational, life hacks, storytelling, tips, reviews, etc. You can fit almost anything into a 60-second video format with modern editing methods. For a while, I was also interested in maintaining my profile in TikTok. I used the services of [that'd be spam - Protagonist] and gained my first audience. However, I quickly got bored and returned to the forums and Twitter.

True, loads of businesses have seen an opportunity to get in front of that youth audience and have added it to their social output. Obviously, the kids will just see a few ads and decide that the platform is done, and move elsewhere as they have with every other platform before it.

I think it's been a while since it was about the dancing anyway - the "content", which seems to be sadly leaking over into Instagram, mostly consists of people standing in front of a mirror looking blank or simply repeating the same crap that everyone else is doing in the hope of one day being an internet star by some sort of viral miracle. The platform is pretty much a void of original content.

You realise any internet forum where people interact in any way is "social media" (ie this website)? The forum scene was around before facebook etc and formed the backbone of what we now know as "social media"
That's where it started out, but in a poll last year in the UK people aged 16-25 stated that they would get their news from tiktok rather than print, TV or facebook media sources, so a bit more than "kids dancing"
Why does it make no sense? If you have one person making a complaint it's easy enough to shut them up, keep them quiet and move them on. If you have 3,000 people (or 30,000) it's a lot harder. Big businesses love to say that everyone's happy and jolly and not abused or exploited at all, but if you have a large amount of people all saying the same thing it's hard to keep saying they're all happy

That's true however I feel like social media has become a different thing recently.

It's no longer people sharing text messages with one another, but rather having someone's entire life becoming public domain, as most people I've met at least, tend to put photos or videos or say about every little thing they do or achieve. This is forum is hardly that, yes technically is a social media, is it really considering the modern term of the word is just like saying wether TSW is a simulator or a game

It's crazy how much that platform has grown over the last year or two.

If I had to hazard a guess, is that for some reason getting popular there could be much easier than on similar platforms like YouTube, making a TikTok video takes much less effort, and yet could start you a respectable career. While other media are more considered for personal use. But to be honest those are just ludicrous theories of mine, I have almost no idea on how these sites work. I'm mainly on Reddit to keep track of some communities I'm interested in and YouTube.

That's how people may use certain platforms, but generally anything where users generate the content and can publish their own stuff is "social media". It's distinguished from legacy media because the host or broadcaster isn't responsible for the content held on that platform, ie if I say something on here, or facebook (or Tiktok) then I am liable for it rather than DTG or Meta or Tiktok

And it might go away just as quickly, but with how the internet is nowadays it's not really that surprising. Anything where loads of "pretty girls" upload content means that other people will jump on there very quickly.
And yeah, it takes a lot less time to create, edit and curate a 15 second video than a YouTube or other content, but they also get dismissed just as quickly so it's likely you need to keep making them and making them to get the monetisation...

I don't know - there is a lot of good content - and the Algorithm is scarily good at figuring out what you like. It's great for the Neurodivergent too.

I mean who would have thought a railfan would have 2 million followers a lot of whom are from outside the hobby. But Francis has

TikTok is a different kind of content but still worthy of respect.

Plus I had the joy this morning of BART (San Francisco) trolling Elon Musk with one of the current tunes...

Maybe because everyone should troll a person that should just google the word ,,train" instead of coming up with ideas to ,,revolutionize" transportation, like turning subway tunnels into a dystopian car conveyor belt with shiny LEDs that is catastrophic in terms of capacity.

I have mixed feeling on Tik Tok, it’s not a bad site by itself, it’s just the idiots on there that ruin it. Well everyone has to make there money somehow, and self promotion plays a massive part

I mean, it wouldn't be so bad if it was a thread about the actual product, rather than some inane chat about TikTok. Gotta wonder whether it was TikTok that lead them here, rather than anything train related! :D

I guess it's fair to say there's validity in everyone's opinion or necrobump and validity in every agreement or disagreement. It's not a communist forum here.
Let's be logical here, they'll be a huge cross section of players in that arena.

In hindsight, not putting all your social media eggs in one basket's looking pretty smart, now Musk's trying to compete with Zuckerberg to set a speed record for bankrupting a social media giant.
