Is the save game option broken on all or some routes? Does it just work when playing a scenario and not on a service/timetable?
It's just broken full stop. If it works properly then it's a fluke, really. This is why a lot of people say "do not save under any circumstances". which is useless because people ignore that advice, save the game, and are surprised and moan when it doesn't work. I think it's actually more to do with loading the save, rather than the save itself.
It seems to be completely broken for me now. It will let me save but then "resume saved game" option is permamently greyed out. Xbox Series X. I've only been playing HSC last couple of days so maybe it's specific to that route. I mean, it's been generally broken since launch in that it was a 50/50 chance the resumed service would still work, but this is a new one lol. I don't even usually try to save, but i was hoping a reload would solve the ES44 sound cutting out bug....
Not on Bakerloo Line. Just the process of saving destroys the breaks somehow, making you leak pressure until the train won't move anymore. https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/problem-line-bakerloo.33714/page-2 Happend to me multiple times on the longer scenarios. Since that, I never saved a single time. It does help the immersion tho, being forced to play the entire scenario, forced to the seat, unable to get up and do something else - just like real life!
The save button should just be removed until such a time as the functionality can be made to work properly. We all know that it doesn't work so why annoy new players and trigger support tickets and negative reviews by pretending that you can save your progress mid way through a journey when doing so more often than not will break the game?
Two examples of uses for the save game that aren't affected by the brokenness: I'll save when I'm walking a route so I can pick up where I left off, and I'll save when I'm about to hit one of Clinchfield's two-yard stop windows just in case I need multiple tries.
Well it does work on some routes. The older German inter urban like Rhein Ruhr Osten seems to restore okay as does the new Chemnitz route. For the UK it never worked on West Somerset at the best of times. Forget BML but NTP seems okay, TVL is 50/50 whether your game comes back okay, same with GWE. However I strongly disagree with calls to remove it completely. One of the reasons I didn’t buy Zusi 3 and rarely play OpenBVE is the inability to save. We are not all computer nerds who can sit in front of the screen for two or three hours to finish up a run or scenario, let alone roleplay an entire 12 hour shift. I would rather gamble on it working on the routes where I know there’s a chance it will be okay and avoid those where it probably won’t work.
It works sometimes... I don't think it breaks anything on GWE, or at least I haven't noticed any bugs.
According to DTG's own research, the average player session on TSW2 is just 27 minutes. To me that means that a lot of players must be using the save function. As OldVern points out, it does work sometimes on some routes. The problem is it's so serendipitous, you can never be sure that you can come back with all the signals and AI intact and with all of the HUD still operational.
If the average is indeed 27 minutes, then frankly it is unacceptable that players can't play or choose not to play for a long time for various reasons aren't able to save. DTG need to fix the save function eventually. They had 5 years to fix it so there is no reason why they haven't tried to fix it after all this time
Agreed I think it's time for DTG to fix the save game issue it has been to long and it needs to be fixed.
When doing Diesel Legends I got checked down to a red in Sonning Cutting after reloading a save and couldn’t get the signal to change, game over.
Have they even acknowledged the problem? I seem to remember a vague statement along the lines of, "we're having trouble replicating it" Which, kind of matches the experience people report, I guess. I don't have much hope it can or will be fixed at this point.
Yeah that signal always made me late for work, Vern. Clever of DTG to replicate it, almost 60 years later
The only way to safely pause the scenario you are running, if you have to do something, is the pause, which is esc button on PC. This does not save so you are safe to resume as long a time later as you want.
Yes they have as tallboy7648 has replied back, I believe they said it had something to do with the dispatcher in the game. Not much has been talked about, but the hopes are that maybe they are trying to fix it.
Only if you have nothing else to do on your PC in the meantime. Most PC owners use their machines for a bunch of things other than gaming.
If I need to do anything else, I just minimize the window that TSW is in and move on. This does not affect the game. Thought I must admit, I have 2 monitor setup.
If you live in a place where summer thunderstorms frequently cause momentary power blips - enough to force a computer reboot - that isn't an option.
Not to mention going away and leaving the PC on is not going to be very energy bill friendly - even standby or "sleep" mode will still be using power.
I find this extremely interesting, as I have never had a major issue with save. I save all the time, and then resume another time and am able to finish whatever I was doing. I do find that sometimes when I resume the hud in the top left corner can be a little faded, but that’s not game breaking. I have seen so many people complain about it, but I am yet to experience those issues, thank goodness! I’m on PC (steam) by the way.
All great ideas. Except you shouldn’t have to do them. The save function should work, as advertised. Full stop. Otherwise start putting a disclaimer on every new sale of the game.
I don't see dtg putting a disclaimer about the save function. Although in my opinion they should especially for new players since it doesn't work
To my acute embarrassment, I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to try it. But does it mean playing in Windowed mode? I always play in full screen.
I said GWE, not Diesel Legends. I have had no issues so far with GWE and in the past I frequently saved and loaded scenarios and services on this route. The only problem I can think of is the lights in the Class 166, although I can't remember if that was caused by the save game or the lights being glitchy in the 166 anyway.
I strongly suggest getting a UPS, I got one after a unplanned power outage I was almost done finishing my run when it went out. The next day I went and bought one best money spent as it has saved my back side already from another power outage.
Yes but Diesel Legends uses GWE which is effectively still the same core route. I will have to do some more testing as that would indicate the save game lies more with the timetable than the actual route. Certainly an interesting theory!
Do you expect the save game function to work? Remember this is a niche product so maybe you should lower your expectations. /s
What a silly comment! TSW is no more niche than some other games and DTGs own sister train game not only has a save that works but can be used for each and every scenario if you want to break and come back later. Would you buy a golf game and expect to play all 18 holes in one go? I think not…
There are two different bugs generally caused by the save game feature. One is trains and the other is AI and signalling. As for the former, I've never had train bugs caused by saving in the Class 166, 66 and HST. I haven't come across issues with the latter either, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. It is safe to assume that as trains have got more complex they break more frequently and more signals means more signalling issues. The Diesel Legends trains and timetable may have save issues, but that won't affect the other content - at least not in theory. If a feature is offered it ought to work.
The lights in the Class 166 on TSW2 are always turned off which ruins the immersion, especially seeing AI services at night - and that's without any issues related to the save game.
For something to be broken then it needs have been working to start with, as such I can be confident in saying that nothing has broke in regards to the save game feature.
Sorry, that's nonsense. The save game function is broken because it does in fact work sometimes on some routes, just not reliably. The fact that it's available but doesn't always work completely or only works half the time on some routes means it's broken. How many ways do you want us to say it?
Has it ever worked fully across all routes? No is the simple and correct answer. Its never worked correctly consistently and nothing has broke on it recently to make it worst.
Well if it doesn't work as intended, then it is indeed broken. It can't be half broken or a little broken. It's just broken
