Today, I'm suggesting that the BR Class 14 (Nicknamed Teddy Bear). The Locomotive The British Rail Class 14 is a type of small diesel hydraulic locomotive built in the mid-1960s. 56 of these 0-6-0 locomotives were ordered to be built at British Railways Swindon Works. The anticipated work for this class was trip working movements between local yards and short-distance freight trains. The good all-around visibility from the cab and dual controls also made them capable of being used for shunting duties. Out of the 56 built: 32 were sadly scrapped, 5 were exported (3 to Spain and 2 to Belgium) and a healthy 19 are preserved. * Which Route? As TSW2 currently doesn't have a route set in the western region during the 1960s, I suggest that this locomotive should be added to the West Somerset Railway. This would make sense as D9518 and D9526 are both currently preserved at the WSR * - Information from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_14
I am not a fan of Western stuff but there is something about the teddy bears which really make me like them. They are very well suited to the WSR. Brilliant suggestion
This is a pure guess (as I am from further up north) but would the class 14s have been used near Paddington and if so could they be used on diesel legends to do the shunting duties?
Wikipedia is rather vague, Matt, as to where they actually worked but as I noted above subbing for the existing shunting locos would be the best move without a dedicated route. Worth noting from Wikipedia that many were sold into private ownership, either the Coal Board or British Steel, so something like the Corby area or Ashington in Northumberland with a few of these would make a nice little industrial complex route as a DLC.
Even better if a Class 14 were part of a diesel pack for a steam-era BR(W) route set in the 60's, where it could substitute in for a Pannier Tank locomotive. Other diesels (e.g. the Class 35, 42 and 52) could then substitute for something like a Castle, King or Hall Class.
Fair few class 14's worked in the Gloucestershire area for their short but not so sweet BR careers, working trip freight's in the Forest of Dean and the Stroud valley branches, the work they were created for being killed off by the beeching axe swing of the early to mid 60's.
I would spend 30 euros now for that loco in the quality of the cl.08. Dtg pls. More loco addons! So many good suggestions for br diesels & shunters, but no ear on the dev side.
they were really only seen on the western region however around 2 or 3 were re-allocated to the eastern region at one point. However, they weren't really liked as much in the eastern region..
